Voting rights — especially for Black and young voters — are under attack. That’s why When We All Vote, Michelle Obama and Chris Paul are launching the #VoteLoud HBCU Squad Challenge to empower HBCU students to take a leading role in voter registration, education, and mobilization efforts on their campuses.

I typically don’t put politics on this blog but I’ve had a huge election let-down today seeing this:

You’d think that a tax restructuring which would see 97% of Illinoisans paying less, one which has a website detailing their plan and allowing curious voters to compare their own results by income, should win by a landslide, but a massive disinformation campaign funded by Citadel CEO Kenneth Griffin told people that middle-class income tax would go up, and now we’re stuck with a flat tax that charges the same rate for people who make $15,000 as it does for people who make $15,000,000.  This also leaves Illinois in a budget crisis, in the middle of a pandemic.

In related news, here’s something else I learned about today:

According to thePeoria Journal Star, this removal which 55% of voters did not want will leave the Illinois Supreme Court at a 3-3 split between Republican and Democratic judges, and looks like part of a Republican power grab toward a seat in 2022.

made this zine about why it’s important to do more than just vote. i, like many of you, am pretty frustrated by the people yelling at me to go vote, as if it’s the be-all, end-all of political engagement and is the solution to all our problems. yes, i’m registered to vote. yes, i’m voting biden. BUT, we HAVE TO DO MORE.

Scott “I agree with (Donald Trump) on almost everything” Morrison?

Can we please not re-elect this garbage?

Labor is a bit pathetic, but that’s a deranged reason to elect the worst possible party, the LNP, instead.

Anyway, the Greens are right there on the voting slips.

as we get closer and closer to november, I’d like to get on my soapbox once again to remind all of the americans in my feed that voting is a critically important tool in any democracy – and one that people on the right have tried to take away from us time and time again. it isn’t just important to get donald trump out of office – thousands of state and local seats, plus the house and senate, are up for grabs and they’ll make an impact for far longer than the next few years. with redistricting happening, the people we elect will determine how we draw our electoral maps/districts for the next TEN years and they’ll determine whether our supreme court shuts down progressive reforms for the next generation.

with all that being said, I’d like to add a caveat. voting on its own does not dismantle the systems of white supremacy and systemic racism that exist in our country and around the world. voting is a significant tool for activism, but it is not a replacement for civil unrest/protests/riots/etc. these problems don’t start or end with trump, and we’ve got a lot of work to do to fight for progress long-term, both inside and outside of our current institutions.

preparing for upcoming elections:

  • if you have registered or voted before… check your voter registration here! tons of voters have been systematically purged from the voter rolls.
  • if you have yet to register… you can register to vote here, no matter where you live. if you’ve moved since the last election (even one street over), you have to update your registration.
  • if you live in a state that allows you to apply for an absentee ballot without a reason**… do that as soon as possible! COVID-19 will likely be heavily impacting our election and republicans are looking for every opportunity to suppress the right to vote
  • if you live in a state that requires you meet certain criteria to apply for an absentee ballot***… check if you meet those criteria here. this, however, could change before the election because COVID-19 concerns are forcing a lot of states to consider making mail-in voting more accessible, so keep an eye out!

** good states that may be trying to suppress the vote in other ways, but at least they aren’t in this way:alaska, arizona, california, colorado, district of columbia, florida, georgia, hawaii, idaho, illinois, iowa, kansas, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, montana, nebraska, nevada, new jersey, new mexico, north carolina, north dakota, ohio, oklahoma, oregon, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, utah, vermont, virginia, washington, wisconsin, wyoming
*** dumb states:alabama, arkansas, connecticut, delaware, indiana, kentucky, louisiana, massachusetts, mississippi, missouri, new hampshire, new york, south carolina, tennessee, texas, west virginia

many states/territories also have primary elections and runoffs scheduled BEFORE november 3rd. to see if you have an election coming, click hereorhere.

organizations working to protect the right to vote:
if you’re interested in fighting voter suppression (etc.), here’s my plug for some organizations doing great things in the space:

other than getting involved with the work these organizations are doing, you can also sign up to adopt a swing state, taking action to ensure victory for progressive causes and democratic candidates in november.

this is by no means comprehensive, but I hope it can serve as a resource for americans in the lead-up to the election. i work full-time in voting rights advocacy and am always willing to answer questions or provide information, so reach out if there’s anything i can do!
