2010′s Musical Thoughts #3- American Idiot

American Idiot opened on Broadway on April 20th, 2010 (haha that’s the weed day), and is a jukebox musical using the music of Green Day (specifically from their concept album American Idiot). The story follows three best friends, each a disaffected teenage boy living in modern day America, as they go in search of their own lives. One finds drugs and nihilism, one goes to fight in the army, and one stays home and becomes a depressed alcoholic from the stresses of being a teenage father. I compared the energy in the last musical Fela! To electricity, and American Idiot has a similar abundance of energy. However, Fela’s energy is more similar to electricity in that it is finely channeled and graceful. American Idiot, however, is a fucking nuclear bomb. It is pure chaos and nihilism exploding on the physical stage with no control and no path, just like its center characters. That’s not a negative description though, it works to the show’s benefit. This show is more emotion than logic, exactly how Green Day was meant to be interpreted. This is a band I grew up with, and the iconic songs explode from the stage like never before. Ensemble harmonies add depth and richness to the sound, elevating the songs from one person’s angst to shared experiences of frustration and anger between all groups of people. The biggest takeaway from American Idiot is that no matter your religion, race, sexuality, gender, sex, whatever, you deserve to be angry and express it instead of repressing it.

{from top left my reasoning behind each…}

Stef: pissed at everything, tomboyish, going against all of them

Andy: annoying as FUCK, cheerleader, doesn’t contribute ANYTHING to the movie (aka music in general)

Brand: tries to keep all of the children in check so they don’t die, still gets roped into stupid shit once in a while though

Chunk: kinda annoying, scared of everything, has some good moments once in a while

Data: smart, knows his shit, helps out everyone (the music industry)

Mouth: perverted and an asshole but is still the best one in the movie

Mikey: only one who knows what is going on, kind, most of all he’s just NORMAL
