-screencap redraw-

Drew one of my favorite scenes, from the first Scream movie of 1996.

When I’m waiting outside the door for my roommate to get the fuck out of the bathroom.

Gifts4GothsTales of Halloween review: I actually liked this a lot and consider it one of the better horror compilations of the last few years.  There is a nice mix of sub-genres (supernatural, monster, killer, etc.).

Here are some quick spoiler-free notes on the various segments.

1. “Sweet Tooth” - short and sweet & scary. Great start to the compilation.

2. “The Night Billy Raised Hell” - the vibe reminded me a little of Satan’s Little Helper

3. “Trick” - one of the weaker ones

4. “The Weak and the Wicked” - not the most original idea but delivers.

5. “Grim Grinning Ghost” - short and scary - it will make you want to leave the lights on for a while!

6. “Ding Dong” - one of the weaker ones, surreal

7. “This Means War” - an awesome battle of home haunters

8. “Friday the 31st” - surreal and hilarious

9. “The Ransom of Rusty Rex” - not bad

10. “Bad Seed” - amusing.use of stop motion animation

Bonus: The animations between the segments are great.

**MOVIE REVIEW TIME!**
It’s been a while since I watched something new to me. So I FINALLY got around to watching The Witch yesterday. I remember seeing the previews that were released for this film and just thought it looked like it would be atmospherically terrifying. I was not let down. The ominous musical score, the style in which the movie was filmed in mostly natural light & the general claustrophobic feel of the film is really jarring. This is not a normal “jump-scare” type of film, while there are certainly a few of those in there. The panic and fear this film creates build with the story as continues forward. I was happy to see that while some of the movie did focus on possession the film wasn’t over-indulgent in special effects of any kind - which for the time period the film is set in made them all the more scary.
The film claims it’s story & dialogue to be based on writings of the time as well. You can certainly imagine the director/writer saw Häxan a few times because I see some obvious parallels. If you enjoy creepy folklore surrounding witchcraft through the ages you will recognize some of the themes in this film. I watched this during the day and have to say that I agree with one IMDB reviewers when he said:
“I found “The Witch” to be a generally unnerving film, and one which–though I would not place it in the pantheon of scariest flicks I’ve ever seen–had some moments that I’ll not easily forget.”

I did sleep with a night light on last night.

“Horror’s not a symptom, it’s a love affair!”

I finished Stephen Graham Jones’ novel, “My Heart is a Chainsaw” about a week ago and I still have a lot of feelings about it. I like horror but I’ve never really enjoyed slashers and to read a slasher instead of watching one I think is what made this book so captivating. It’s dark, and beautiful, and heartbreaking. the main character, Jade, is one of a handful of main characters I’ve ever loved unapologetically in my life. Hot damn, Stephen Graham Jones just understood what it’s like to be weird, neurodivergent teen goth in a small town.
