Millions of years ago during the early Jurassic period, a baby marine reptile called an ichthyosaur gorged itself on prehistoric calamari. Then, it died abruptly — its belly full of squid.

We have another marine reptile from the Paja Formation in Colombia. Muiscasaurus was a Late Cretaceous ophthalmosaurid, we have uncovered part of its skull, some ribs, and vertebrae. Muiscasaurus had four nostrils, two openings on each side of its snout.Muiscasaurusprobably consumed prey that were soft and small.
The waves lapped against the carcass like goodbye kisses. The tide was lowering. Soon the ichthyosaur’s mass would press on itself, push the bones and fat and flesh to the sand, settling like a dropped mountain. Somehow the flies hadn’t found it yet, but the pterosaurs had, and their little nibbles in the flesh were like pale freckles across the slate-grey hide. Waves rolled, spilled around the dead reptile. Archosaurs darted on the sand, hesitant to get their feet wet, patient for the tide to completely recede and the feast to be available before the mass bloated with rancid gasses.
This is a 24" long string of twenty, articulared Ichthyosaur vertebrae from the Posidonia Shale in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The bones are in excellent condition and their dark color stands out nicely against the gray shale. Most of the vertebrae retain their processes and are nicely prepared.
Little paddle belonging to a juvenile Ichthyosaur. The small skeleton was found near Lyme Regis, a historic town on Britain’s Jurassic Coast where pioneer of palaeontology, Mary Anning, once lived.
