Folktales have always fascinated me, and Selkies in particular for their quintessential fairy allure and moral ambiguity…the sea calls us back with promises of creation, power, and destruction in equal measure.

My new painting for the Midnight Garden show at @moderneden curated by @beautifulbizarremagazine , which opens next weekend!
This piece is a meditation on inspiration and it’s source - I’m fascinated by stories of fire-bringing deities and the divine impulse sparking wonder in the heart of humanity, and wanted to dwell in that with this image. The heat of creative light shimmers with embers that float skyward from the source where the god has brought his focus…

I am so excited to say that my painting “The Tale of the Swan Princes” was accepted into Infected by Art Vol. 9! I am so happy to be included alongside so many incredible works of art by artists that are literally my role models. Also, a confession: this is the only fantasy painting that I finished last year, and I finished it just in time for this competition. Covid closed schools and cancelled conventions and threw my work schedule out the window. I felt like I accomplished very little of the work that I’m really passionate about. But here is a bright spot, at the start of a new year, and I’m reminded that even if you’re only moving forward a tiny bit, you’re still moving forward. .

The first experiment with multiple layers of tracing paper and varnish, done a few years back at IMC. I call it So Much Depends Upon because this piece taught me that so much depends upon subtle expressions in simple lines. (Thank you Rebecca Leveille for the guidance) …and of course, I do love the poetry by William Carlos Williams, The Red Wheelbarrow
