Here it is, the final Jurassic June piece. And, instead of going for a baby, I gave the existing baby T. rex an edgy teen phase!

This juvenile T. rex is based on Jane, the fossil specimen argued to be a juvenile T. rex(orNanotyrannus to some). This makes the animal a lot more sleek and lithe, perfect for fast pursuits before it turns into a chunky tankbuster.

Enjoy and hope you’ve had fun this month!

Here’s the penultimate Jurassic June entry, Jurassic World’s Mosasaurus.

I wasn’t able to find a lot of complete baby mosasaur remains online to base this one off of, so I made the silhouette a bit closer to a real Mosasaurus, along with incorporating some juvenile crocodile and komodo dragon. Including having a stand-out color scheme. Baby komodo dragons/monitor lizards (a close relative to ol Mosa) are seriously pretty. Enjoy!

Here are some baby Pachycephalosaurus for JurassicJune. Some may be more familiar with the name “Dracorex” but it seems unlikely that it was a separate species at the moment.

I know Dracorex already exists as a separate species in film canon (or at least as far as Jurassic World Evolution is concerned), but I liked this idea too much to give up on it. Enjoy!

BabyStegostoma fasciatum! I couldn’t wait to post this picture. Confusing to many, this is where the Zebra shark gets its name: the baby is born with black and white stripes and as the animal ages, its stripes are lost and morphed into the mature pattern we see as black spots over beige skin - which leads to the misnomer of “Leopard shark” (which is actually Triakis semifasciata, a houndshark).

“I came across another juvenile jewel beetle in Nasu in Tochigi Prefecture. This guy with a teddy bear head shape on its carapace fell on my sleeve when a monkey shook the branches of a tree I was walking under. I was surprised to see my question was already answered when I arrived, but thought others might enjoy another photo of this neat bug.”

Thank you very much for your beautiful photo, and also for sending me a pre-identified Bug of Japan! It’s really helpful, and I’m so glad my blog was able to help you out!

The colour-changing Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris)

I’ve always had a soft spot for Cuvier’s beaked whales, which their recent dive records only deepened. However, during the creating of their illustrations, I learned so much more about them. I thought I was familiar with their markings, and originally I had meant to paint just two: an adult male and female. Until my client corrected me that I had, in fact, painted a subadult and a young adult male, instead of the truly mature old male he’d had envisioned. And so two illustrations became four, and in the end I think they work together very nicely to show the “Cuvier gradient”. I had no idea adult females were so light-backed - I had always assumed these to be males. And the ghostly old males were an especially big surprise. Apparently this is a totally normal and common colour pattern for mature males, which is simply not often represented in illustrations of the species. Really cool to learn more about this species, so I just had to make a proper poster out of it. Hopefully you’ll find it interesting too!
