#khepera

Scarabs are engraved stones representing the Scarab beetle (Scarabaeus sacer), which rolls each of its eggs in a ball of mud and may be seen on sandy slopes in the hot sunshine of Egypt; rounding the pellet by pushing it backwards uphill with its hind legs, and allowing it to roll down again. The ancient Egyptian compared this living germ to the sun, which brings matter into life, and the Scarab became the symbol of creation, and sacred to their Sun-god, Khepera. It was their custom as far back as 4,600 years B.C. to bury these engraved Scarabs with their dead, and frequently one was placed in the heart itself. It was an emblem of re-creation, and symbolized this evolution of the soul through eternity.

The island of Santiago is 1 of the 10 islands that make Cabo Verde. These islands on the western coast of Afraka are often forgotten but you’d be surprised at how important these humble islands are to us as ascendents of Afraka

Praia, the capital of CV, is in Santiago… Cidade Velha, a world heritage sight, is also one of the last places many of our ancestors who were enslaved stepped after being tortured… they were forced back onto boats and shipped in the most inhumane conditions to many of the places we call “home” today. Even lesser known is the story of Somada, the town that birthed the resistance. Legend has it that many people who were attempted to be enslaved fought to escape and settled in this particular valley which of course turned out to play a vital role in the eventual rebellion against Portuguese colonialism, and independence from Portugal

Lastly —for now— there is literally a concentration camp that most people have no clue about which is in Tarrafal, a beach city that has become an extremely popular tourist attraction. Not sure how many of them actually visit the concentration camp that was established by Salazar, the Portuguese dictator, for political prisoners who were against his regime. Many people who are from Cabo Verde don’t even know this story because the shame and neocolonialism (yes, most of the continent is still colonized just in more subtle but significant ways)… this is just scratching the surface of the POWER of these islands✨ As we kNOW ourselves we heal ourselves to FREE ourselves! Stop and smell the yesterday was day 2 of the #KhepeRAchallenge for me — STILLNESS✨ was the theme but eye really spent little time still. Eye honestly didn’t even start with my 11 minutes of stillness (yikes!) but it’s all good cause eye made time as eye watered the plants and settled at sunset☀️ Eye have been building here, literally, and organizing things back in Brooklyn from over 5,550 miles away… the average person really couldn’t even manage the share number of things eye juggle in NY alone! Eye am so thAnkhful to have the ability to handle complexity but it’s not always with grace, and it’s not always healthy. Eye grow when eye make time to be STILL eye am accepting that it has to look differently for me right now. Eye am committing to the stillness before eye take a step out of the bed. Tracking my fertility has added another interesting dynamic to slow me down when eye awaken and center me on the throne of my womb #naturalbirthcontrol

We start the day with 11 minutes of STILLNESS because everyone’s “meditation” is different. Without the weight of that particular word it allows each participant to explore and find their own way within themselves
