It is troublesome finding good apps for learning Icelandic. My books are great, but apps are more helpful for establishing daily learning routines. I have been using Duolingo for Norwegian the past two weeks, but they do not have Icelandic, unfortunately. And it is Icelandic that I truly love and want to ‘master’ one day.

I’ve been using Helga Hilmisdottir’s Beginner’s Icelandic book-with-CD set: http://www.indiebound.org/book/9780781811910

I took the University of Iceland online tutored course Icelandic Plus, but it was not especially helpful. The material isn’t well-organized, and there were a number of technical issues with the website. The self-taught course is free, but the tutored course carries a fee of about US $500. I passed, but I didn’t feel I’d learned anything, so I’m starting over with the Hilmisdottir course.

What I really want to do is go to Iceland and do an immersion course, but that doesn’t quite fit with my day job at present.

Since no ones really made a comprehensive Icelandic Textbook for non-Icelandic speaks that isn’t total crap, I’d like to second Helga Hilmisdottir’s Beginner’s Icelandic Book with CD set, it’s very helpful with pronunciation and was recommended to me by my prof who said my pronunciation was too Faroese urgh. I´ve tried the University of Iceland´s online site and it´s just not run very well it´s very disorganized. 

The Íslenska to enska vasaorðabók by Forlagið is also the god damn best dictionary ever that has helped me sooooo soooo much in learning. It´s expensive and like a pain in the ass to get but oh my goddddd it´s so helpful.

Arnold Taylor’s dictionary is okay in an emergency but it’s not a good trust worthy book. 

My prof Jackson Crawford might come up with a comprehensive Icelandic Textbook for English speakers in the future tho so there is hope!

If we are talking Icelandic text books I really enjoyed the Learning Icelandic by Audur Einarsdottir and co. Which was really helpful for my first year taking Icelandic. It was published in 2001??? And also comes with an audio cd going over most of the Icelandic text in the book.

Another REALLY GOOD through incredibly HARD TO READ textbook is islenska fyrir utlendinga by Asta Svavarsdottir and Margret Jonsdottir. For a textbook that is specifically for foreigners to learn Icelandic it is written in a very advanced Icelandic. But what you learn from it is incredibly detailed and very good. While this one doesn’t have an audio cd it does had a super handy exercise book to help work those grammar skills. I know my instructor at the university of manitoba as well as the intermediate students are working on translating this one though I am unclear on if it will be published or not (fingers crossed for it to be because it is a good textbook)

If you are just looking for some exercises, Hitt og Þetta is great workbook for that. you can actually get the workbook PDF free to download here: https://www.mms.is/namsefni/hitt-og-thetta-pdf Ive found sitting down to translate these and answer the questions really help. I believe it also has an audio CD you can also download? but Ive never used it myself so I’m not quite sure on it.

For apps, I dont really have much, but I know if you use quizlet there are a few flash cards and flashcard games you can get to practice. All you have to do is download the app and search for sets any classes or sets people have made available to share and you can use them! I think I may also have a few sets available to use on there as well.

and for websites I’ve used and have been told they are quite handy sites.

• http://icelandiconline.is/index.html this site has modules you can work through from easy to harder levels! its mainly in Icelandic but is easy enough to navigate and fun to use! Also free to use!

• http://tungumalatorg.is/viltu_laera_islensku/ and then this website has some videos you can watch. They are made specifically for foreigners learning Icelandic so they speak verrrryyy slooowwlllyyy and their pronunciations are verrryyy pronounced. 

• Lastly, the best icelandic dictionary ever is available online here: http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/IcelOnline/Search.TEId.html I use it for all of my translations and its free and easy to use (and you can cheat at finding english words by typing in the english word and changing the drop box option from Headword Only to Entire Entry, though, it is hit or miss depending on the word you are looking for) 

Anyways sorry for the information drop but I’ve got plenty more for anyone who ever needs to know!

Advice and resources from friendly folk!

If any of y'all have tried to learn korean on your own and succeeded or are doing relatively well… how? Pretty please tell me how you did it

Also my brain: you aren’t even studying italian diligently, if you add another language you will stress, give up on both languages and I’ll fight you bitch

It’s embarrassing how I spend more time daydreaming about speaking my target language than actually studying it

Daily reminder that minimal effort is still effort, no one is racing you, take your time.

Anyone wants to share their study plan when starting to learn a new language on their own? I want to go back to studying but I don’t know how to approach it in a methodical way and I just end up creating chaos and tiring myself within a week

So if you’re not in Italy there are a bunch of shows that won’t work and that’s the reason I made this list with the ones that do work, is a real hit or miss honestly, I don’t know if depending on where on earth you are more or less show links work, but this ones were a bunch that worked for me so…

Mind you there are some categories in which I chose less things than in other so there might be other shows that also work if you’re outside of Italy.

In order to watch anything on RaiPlay you have to create an account (Don’t worry is free and it takes only a few minutes) I divided the shows in the categories that you’ll find them.

And don’t even ask me what most of these shows are about I’m as clueless as you, I saw that the links worked and added them to my list.

Argentina is a very catholic country, therefore is shouldn’t come as a surprise that we use in a daily so many expressions with God or religious things in it, don’t you worry no one will scold you or tell you to not use the name of God in vain (The only way that can happen is if you come across a person obsessed with religion level 100) , we are so used to it that even people that are barely religious or not religious at all will use them.

Once again chances are some of these are used in other countries with slight changes here and there.

Dios dame paciencia porque si me das fuerza lo mato=God give me patience because if you give me strength I’ll kill him. The pronoun in this one can always be changed depending on who you are talking to. Is basically used when you want to let someone or a group of people know that you’re already losing or lost your patience with them. Mothers or at least mine loved to use this one because I’m not going to lie, I was quite annoying as a kid.

Dios le da pan al que no tiene dientes= God gives bread to those that don’t have teeth. Is used when someone receives something good but can’t or won’t appreciate it as much as they should.

Dios aprieta, pero no ahorca= God squeezes but doesn’t choke. This one is used as a way to acknowledge that someone is going through a rough patch, but they still will be able to get out of there.

Si la limosna es grande hasta el santo desconfía=If the alms are big even the saint is suspicious. Is a way to say that if something is or sounds way too good to be true you should be cautious.

San Roque que este perro no me mire ni me toque =Saint Roch don’t let this dog look at me or touch me. Some people believe that Saint Roch is the saint of dogs because he is always pictured with a dog by his side, is it true? I don’t know I’m barely aware of religious things but anyways, people who are scared of dogs will think about this quote or say it when they see them, for example if a big dog is around while walking down the street my grandma will be saying this under her breath hoping the dog doesn’t bark or go near her.

Menos sabe Dios y perdona =God knows less and forgives. This is a cheeky one used when people ask you too much about something that you know will get you in trouble if they discover it.

Most of these bands are from Argentina but I think there might be a few from Uruguay. Anyways enjoy because all of them are amazing if you don’t have the willingness to listen to all of them right now, at least listen to my favorite ones because those are extremely amazing, I’ll mark them with this (F).

I had to physically stop myself from adding more songs, there are too many amazing rock songs from Argentina (and Uruguay), maybe I’ll do a second part of rock songs, I don’t know.

Los piojos or Ciro y los persas¹= You can google it either way, the thing is Los Piojos splitted and the singer of the band did some old songs with his new band

Prohibido – Callejeros²= I’m clarifying this for anyone who’s Spanish is not that good yet, in a part of the song they say homosexuality is a bad word and is not something normal people do, along with a lot of stereotypes from the decade, what the song does is criticize that kind of thoughts that’s why later on the song it says “I don’t listen and I keep going, because a lot of the things that are “forbidden” make me happy” just in case your brain goes all what the fuck when you listen that line, the song is against narrow minded and conservative thoughts.

안녕하세요 여러분! Today I have a new kind of lesson for you all: it’s about Hanja! If you don’t know what Hanja is, it’s “Chinese characters borrowed from Chinese and incorporated into the Korean language with Korean pronunciation,” according to Korean Wiki Project. Korean words that feature the same borrowed character often have a shared meaning of some sort, which is why Hanja is good to know! If you know the meaning of one word with a character, you might be able to figure out another word with the same character without even using a dictionary! 

To start this series of lessons, I wanted to start with the character 최; I got an ask about some words starting with it and thought it’d be helpful to make a short lesson about it :) I’m also going to post this on my Instagram soon as well, so go check it out there too! Let’s start!

안녕하세요 여러분! Hey everyone! Today I have a lesson with a grammar structure you hear pretty often and it yet another way to say “because” in Korean lol. I also made a post on my Instagram about this structure, so go check that out as well! Let’s start!

Here’s the formula for this structure:

• [verb stem] + 느라고 + [rest of sentence]
• Note that this can only be used with verbs, not adjectives.
• I believe the -고 can be dropped with no difference in meaning.

-느라고 is used to explain a reason for a consequence, and this consequence is usually negative. It can also be used in contexts when your doing one action prevents you from doing the other. Let’s look at some examples:

• 공부하느라고 밤 새웠어요. = I stayed up all night studying.
• Here, you’re explaining what caused you to stay up all night, which was studying.
  
• 숙제를 하느라고 파티에 못 갔어요. = I couldn’t go to the party because I was busy doing homework. 
• The consequence of your doing homework is not not being able to go to the party. One action, doing homework, prevented you from doing the other, which is going to the party.

Let’s see some more examples!

• 늦잠을 자느라고 수업에 못 갔어요. = I didn’t go to class because I overslept.
• 운동하느라고 전화를 못 받았어요. = I was exercising, so I couldn’t pick up your phone call.
• 일하느라고 바빴어요. = I was busy working.
• 요리하느라고 힘들었어요. = I was exhausted after cooking. 
• 야근하느라고 집에 늦게 왔어요. = I came home late because I was working overtime.

• 제일 좋아하는 멤버 literally means “favorite member” or “member you like the most.” I often just see 좋아하는 멤버 to mean the same thing, even though it literally means “member that you like.”
  
• 컴백 = comeback
• 콘서트 = concert
• 콘서트티켓 = concert ticket
• 케이팝 = K-pop
• 포토카드 / 포카 = photocard
• 팬 = fan
• 팬사인회 = fan signing event
• 팬클럽 = fan club
  

Verbs

• 덕질하다 = to be a die-hard fan of; to be really into
• 노래하다 = to sing
• 노래를 부르다 is another word for “to sing”

안녕하세요 여러분! I got a request to do some possible questions and answers that you might come across if you’re auditioning to be a K-pop idol! I’m not entirely familiar with the audition process or what kinds of questions might be asked of you, but here’s a list based on what I found online. I think that in order to answer these questions in Korean, you should be familiar with beginner/upper-beginner and some intermediate grammar structures and vocabulary. • 사랑 = love
• 촌스런 -> from 촌스럽다, meaning “old-fashioned”
• 그 = that (must be placed before a noun)
• 감정 = feeling
• 근데 can usually be translated as “but” – it is sometimes used to draw attention to a different topic or something contrasting to what is currently being spoken about.
• 내 = my (informal)
• 가슴 = heart; chest
• -이 is a subject particle – more about particles here!
• 뛰다 = to run; to jump 
• 왜 = why
• 이래 comes from 이렇다, meaning “to be like this” or “to do this.” This line literally means “why am I like this?” but can also mean “what’s wrong with me?”

• -도 = too/even (depending on context)
• 모르다 = to not know
• Adding-게 to a verb or adjective stem turns it into an adverb. 나도 모르게 means “unknowingly” or, more literally, “without me even knowing.”
• 아프다 = to be sick; to hurt
• 나의 = another way to say “my.” -의 is a possessive marker.
• 심장 = heart -> This refers more to the heart, while 가슴 can mean either “heart” or “chest.”
• 쿵쿵 is an onomatopoeia and is supposed to mimic the sound of a heartbeat.

내 뜻대로 되지 않아 / 흔한 filter조차 없어

It’s not going my way / I don’t even have any trendy filter

• 내 = my (informal)
• 뜻 = meaning
• -대로 = according to [smth]; as [smth]
• 되다has a few different meanings. In this case, it’s a little hard to translate directly, but I would say it means “to go” (as in to go a certain way) or “to be done” (as in something is done some way). 
• -지 않다= not / does not 
• More literally, I think this line means “It’s not going according to my meaning.” As with a lot of K-pop lyrics (and Korean in general), it’s best to focus on the meaning rather than the literal English translation, so don’t worry too much if the translation sounds odd!
• 흔하다, according to Naver Dictionary, means “common” or “commonplace.” Not quite sure why Genius translated it as “trendy,” but I guess if something is trendy, it becomes common because everyone is using it. 
• [noun] + 조차 =  even [noun]
• 없다 = to not be there / to not have
