1- I’m a bisexual woman dating a cis straight man. That doesn’t make me straight, and that doesn’t make my relationship a straight one. That doesn’t mean I belong less in the LGBT+ community than a gay person.
2- The fourth example was not a joke. I’m in a fandom where two genderless entities with a temporary human shape are paired together. I’ve seen artists get hate because they drew them “looking straight”. The characters are still non-binary, still in love, STILL NOT STRAIGHT. Do not allow this toxic rhetoric in your fandom. Protect artists.

THERE IS NO HIERARCHY OF WHAT IS MORE ACCEPTABLE IN THE LGBT+ COMMUNITY.
More Americans are identifying as LGBT on college applications in order to gain perceived advantages in admissions processes.
A recent study in the New England Journal of Irreproducible Results has found that there has been a sharp increase in high school students identifying as LGBT solely to reap the affirmative action benefits in college admissions. This is especially true for white male applicants, who feel it’s the only way to mitigate their whiteness and maleness which are seen as disadvantages.
“A white male has to have a perfect 4.0 and several outstanding extra-curriculars [sic] just to have a chance to get into UVA,” bemoaned one mother, a teacher in Fluvanna County, VA, “I was told my son didn’t have a shot because even though he has the 4.0, we’re rich, and UVA simply isn’t looking for those kinds of students.” She encouraged her son to write in his essay that he is genderfluid and on the ace spectrum.
“I don’t like to think of my son having sex and I don’t like that genderqueer as ‘queer’ in it, so I felt this was the lest bad of all worlds.”
When reached for comment, the University of Virginia said that they have no such formal admissions standards, and that the average GPA for incoming freshmen is 4.23, based on weighted GPAs and a 660-680 in each of the SAT categories.
“Perhaps if her son had worked harder in high school, he wouldn’t have had to attend George Mason,” the admissions officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, observed.
The Trump administration has recently addressed the concerns of white people everywhere, promising a fair and balanced affirmative action program that would positively weight citizenship and performance and only give slight preference to income and breeding.
“It’s time to put the ‘American’ back into ‘American University’,” said alt-Right leader, Richard Spencer, “It’s time to end reverse-racism and reverse-sexism. And, yes, it’s racism because affirmative action is institutionalized prejudice. QED,” he added brightly.

On the flip side of that coin, though, it’s been Black women in the entertainment business who’ve said the most injurious things to her about queerness, with no regard for her sexuality. For reasons Ellis can’t quite put her finger on, people fail to recognize she’s part of the LGBTQ community.
“There is an assumption made of me — a presumption made of me. Is it because I’m a Black woman from Mississippi? Is it because I’m older?” she muses. “I don’t know what the mechanics are that goes into them not processing, or them not just being able to believe that in the same way I am Black, I am queer. This is who I am.”
Sir Ian McKellen urges gay people to be better allies to the transgender community.
The legendary actor and Stonewall co-founder joined It’s a Sin star Olly Alexander for a special LGBT+ History Month talk on TikTok on February 25, Pink News reports.
Sir Ian said:
“I do hear people – gay people – talk about transgender people in very much the same terms as people used to talk about your common or garden gay.
“The connection between us all is we come under the queer umbrella – we are queer. I quite like being queer actually.
“The problems that transgender people have with the law are not dissimilar from what used to be the case for us, so I think we should all be allies really.“
This is not the first time the actor has stood up to transphobes.
Speaking to lifestyle magazine Attitude, the veteran star talked about how happy he was about Elliot Page coming out as transgender.
He felt “so disappointed” with himself for not recognizing the struggles that the then-teenage actor could have been facing when they worked together.
The actor talked about why it is important to be honest with oneself.

Asexuelle Sichtbarkeit- und Awareness-Arbeit (Sensibilisierung), die nicht mit dem Ziel eines gesamtgesellschaftlichen Umdenkens agiert, führt eigentlich auch nur zur Assimilation.
Schön hinten einreihen, bloss nix fordern.
Es lässt sich konstruktiv streiten und debattieren, welche Mittel legitim erscheinen; wie viel Provokation und Wut einzusetzen ist (und von wem) und welche “Strategien” einzelne Bildungsakteur_innen bevorzugen, was im Rahmen des Machbaren möglich ist/sein kann.
Aber inbrünstig “Yay, Long Live The Asexual Agenda!” rufen, um dann die gleichen Fehler vergangener Gruppierungen zu begehen, führt letztlich auch nur dazu, dass es die Privilegiertesten unter uns bequem haben. Ob die Ace Community vorhandenen Privilegierungen ihrer unterschieden Mitglieder wahrhaben will oder nicht. Diese Verleugnung und dem Festhalten an “ace is ace, we’re all the same” hat sich bereits früh herauskristallisiert und wird fleißig weitergetragen.
Wie bei anderen sozialen Bewegungen auch, sollte das Ziel eben struktureller Wandel sein. Dass das eine massive Aufgabe darstellt, die alleine kaum zu bewältigen scheint, schüchtert ein. Es kann daher so leichter erscheinen, sich mit der individuellen Schiene zufrieden zu geben.
Unserer Meinung nach fängt es schon bei dem fehlenden asexuellen Selbstbewusstsein an, dass eben durch gewisse Größen in der Ace Community auf möglichst unbedrohliche Weise vermittelt wird. Ace Pride schön und gut, aber bitte keine Bewusstwerdung des radikalen Potentials von Asexualität, dass wahrhaft Chancen aufweist, gesellschaftliches Miteinander zu verbessern. Zu fordern und durchzuziehen – darauf zu pochen, dass Ace Culture vorteilhaft und hilfreich (auch für Allosexuelle) sein kann.
Nein, das wäre ja zu viel des Guten.
Beziehungshierarchisierung und traditionelle Lebensentwürfe in Frage zu stellen – Ace Culture kann neue Wege aufzeigen, uns und unsere Umwelt besser zu verstehen, sie in einem neuen Licht zu sehen. Die auferlegten, anerzogenen Normen einzureißen, wenn sie uns denn nicht mehr zusagen.
Ace Culture ist in dem Aufzeigen von Perspektive keinesfalls einzigartig und wir dürfen, ja sollten so viel von anderen Ideen außerhalb des Kreises lernen; Polyamorie, Beziehungsanarchie, Wissen aus der Aromantischen Community, z.B., bedachtsam Lebensweisen und kuturelles Gut außerhalb der Mehrheitsgesellschaft des US-Eurozentrismus verstehen, ehren und respektieren – und sich eben nicht im bloßen Sinne einer eigennützigen Aneignung oder zweckentfremdeter weißer, nicht-indigener Selbsterkenntnis/-erleuchtung bedienen.
Ebenso wichtig zu verstehen, wann womöglich (nennen wir es) “asexuelle Konzeption” an ihre Grenzen stößt: Wo Motivation von der Verbreitung von Ideen über Identitäten, die stark von westlichem Denken über Sexualität, Romantik, Gemeinsamkeit geprägt sind, zum Aufzwingen mutieren.
Acefeindlich gesinnte Leute behaupten fälschlicherweise, Asexuelle würden sich für eine Restriktion vom Sexleben Anderer einsetzten (sex negativity) und schüren alte, tief sitzende Ängste; verbinden Asexualität mit Konservativismus. 2. Welle RadFem “sex wars” Bilder werden beschwört. Während diese Menschen genau aus diesem Topf greifen.
Damit soll auch erreicht werden, Asexualität von Queerness zu trennen und vice versa. Das Aufarbeiten dieser hanebüchenen Vorwürfe gegenüber Asexuellen ist zeit- und arbeitsintensiv.
Es braucht also Ansätze, die den Kerngedanken von Liberation zu einem zentralen Ankerpunkt erklärt. Es bedarf das Aufzeigen von Allonormativität und ihrer destruktiven Fähigkeiten: Wie sie Erwartungen schürt, Unsicherheiten in Verbindung mit unser Wertigkeit konstruiert, und durch kapitalistischen Einfluss simple Lösungsvorschläge für die künstlichen erzeugten Probleme unterbreitet. Selbstverständlich wird zugleich auch “Altbewährtes” schmackhaft gemacht und in Zeiten von Veränderung als “sicherer Hafen” präsentiert (Stichwort: Nuklearfamilie).
Dagegen heißt es proaktiv anzugehen. Es muss darauf hinauslaufen, mutig bestehende Unterdrückungsverhältnissen etwas entgegenzusetzen. Wir haben nicht *die Lösung*, aber wir haben Mittel, zukünftig Platz für wertvolle Alternativen weg von der Allo-Amato-Norm zu schaffen.

What seriously bugs me is y'alls need for ’simple answers to complex problems’ approach on acemisic discrimination! It boils down to your unwillingness to grasp what social invisibility for an entire sexual minority like asexuals entailsin its contextualization!
It’s really too complicated a topic for a medium like Twitter [where I originally posted this] to fully explain what consequences follows and why things are the way they are. But if you’d only start to dig a little deeper into what actually leads to shame, to hide your identity, to not report targeted discrimination, to next to no media coverage on said discrimination (x), to the lack of sufficient support, to undealt severe effects on mental health(x,x,x,x), to no reports on what level of normalized anti asexual “conversion therapy” attempts do we actually have to deal w/, esp. in psychotherapy (x,x),etc It’s all deeply connected to INVISIBILITY - literally omni influential! But all you want is easily glorified suffering on a plate!
1 simplified example: I can spontaneously only recall 1 PinkNews report on when an asexual teen got kicked out by their parents. But I *know* that it truly doesn’t start nor begin w/ this 1 case of REPORTED acemisia.

Statt einer Devaluation oder gar Absprache von Acefeindlichkeit durch “Das ist das Patriarchat, nicht Acemisia” lieber ein Umdenken , was überschneidende Diskriminierungserfahrungen angeht! Warum bloß Der Feminismus™, wenn queerfeministische Perspektive genauer passt?! Als ob Allosexuelle sich von der Existenz von Acefeindlichkeit angegriffen fühlten (which they uphold; das Eingeständnis als pot. Unterdrückende verursacht Defensive) u sich durch Deklarierung “Das ist eine rein feministische Angelegenheit” vor der Verantwortung drücken wollten. Dass ähnliche oder formgleiche Arten von Unterdrückung a) parallel bei unt. Gruppen existieren können, u/o b) Schnittmenge sind, ist doch nichts Neues. Es geht auch ohne die Absprache der Unterdrückung Asexueller!
Asexuelles Leben ist nicht inhärent unglücklich! Es kann so unheimlich schwer sein, in dieser allonormativen Welt zu navigieren, aber bitte lasst Euch nicht einreden, dass wir in irgendeiner Weise zu einer “minderwertigen Existenz” verdammt sind! #AsexualAffirmations

To expand on this a little: so many fantasy worlds - perhaps the majority - have some sort of grounding in medieval times, AKA just a real shit time to be anything but a straight cis man. Most of RotE very much aligns with this standard, which isn’t to say the story is homophobic or exclusionary but that the world that serves the story is. The narrative may treat Othered characters sympathetically, but those characters are still going to suffer by nature of the society they must function within (even if that suffering is not overt or explicit; repression is suffering). Personally I don’t think including prejudices in your world building is inherently bad. But it’s not inherently good, either, and it has most certainly been done. It’s also a problem that these Othered characters are almost never protagonists, so we don’t actually get to delve into the experience of surviving in that world as someone who has to actually navigate that prejudice. More often than not these characters are just tragic footnotes in the hero’s story, or at best a pitiable sidekick. Then there’s the whole Fictional Other thing (such as the the reviled Wit) which is just……….. Moving on. What I’m saying is there is little variance in how these characters are treated in fiction, let alone fantasy. You get to a point where you want to see characters with all different kinds of identities doing all different kinds of things in all different kinds of stories, because hey, variety is cool.
What makes the Rain Wild Chronicles a breath of fresh air within the fantasy genre AND the larger RotE series is not only the nuanced depictions we get of gay people and their relationships, but the fact that although they cannot change the society they were born into, they ultimately find a home, a sense of belonging and happiness in the end. They create for themselves what no one else would give to them.
Basically, the gays are real, complex people who get to experience not only suffering but growth, romance, sex, challenges that go beyond their sexuality and an actual happy ending.
What’s important to note, too!!!!!! is that she also let this thread run into her much more popular Fitz books. Fitz, coming face to face with the reality of a society where two men can lovingly raise a child without being judged or endangered is important. He is confronted with a culture wherein this “kind” of love (which is really just love) is totally normalised. In this instance he is the stand-in for the society they all grew up in, and seeing him grapple with but ultimately accept this unsettling (to him) concept is not only an important moment for his character development but it is also a reminder of the exact kind of attitudes the dragon keepers have insulated themselves from, a reminder of why they need this place. Obviously if you’ve read all of RotE you also get the Tawny Man trilogy where homophobia is an ongoing theme. Fitz’s story in general has dealt with this stuff in both minor and major ways all along, so having his world and attitudes collide with Kelsingra brings a lot of that baggage to the table. Of course, it’s also a glimpse for him of a “could-have-been”. How different would Fitz’s story have been if he had grown up in a place like Kelsingra?
Anyway I could go on for ages about all this but suffice to say that even in 2019, even in so-called “progressive” countries the idea of Kelsingra, a completely safe place for outcasts and misfits, is still an incredibly powerful one. I think a lot of straight writers underestimate the pain and discomfort it brings queer people to constantly have to delve into these worlds where it is dangerous to be different. Because they think they’re showing us a window into the past, when really they are unwittingly holding up a mirror to our present.
