My biggest running nightmare became reality- 4 miles into my long run Sunday afternoon, I stopped to use the restroom and was assaulted by a man hiding in a stall (that is my GPS in red lines). I fought for my life screaming(“Not today, M**F**er!”), clawing his face, punching back, and desperately trying to escape his grip- never giving up. I was able to lock him in the bathroom until police arrived. Thankfully I just took a self-defense class offered at my work and utilized all of it. Just running in a snow squall the day before Thanksgiving. Winter, you’re not gonna be easy this year are you? A good reminder to soak in the more mild weather now while you can! ☺️ Winter Running Tip: set a threshold. Two winters ago I told myself I’d run outside as long as it was over 10 degrees. Otherwise I took it to the treadmill if I wasn’t feeling braver than the elements. Treadmill miles are real miles! Since I’m training for spring races again, I plan to use that strategy again this year; however, I did invest in an indoor track club - so now I just need to get my butt there during the week!

‘Tis the season for pitch dark 6PM runs ✨
It’s been 6 weeks since the marathon and I’ve been super unmotivated to keep running, but I also really don’t want to start from 0 again so I made myself shuffle in the cold yesterday. My training log will tell you I’ve only been running 2 times a week. It’s been fun adding work out classes back into my schedule but I know it’s time to pump up the miles again if I want to stay consistent (something I have not succeeded with at any point in post grad running ). Hoping the motivation comes back with the miles. For now we’ll depend on discipline ‍♀️✨

Mini training update because I’ve already exhausted myself with what if’s and some tears, and now I’m just over it, frankly. After 13 weeks miraculously and mostly pain-free, the PF issues cropped up big time after a few mistakes in recovery and training. I’m disappointed because I know I did really well listening to my body for 12 weeks, and got a bit ahead of myself/eager to hit some higher mileage, so I’m trying to be less disappointed that I have no choice but to listen to my body this past week. Instead of hitting my highest planned mileage week, I had to rest. I ended up running 13 miles instead of 20. But like I said, I’m over stressing about it. Just gotta take care of the foot and hope it feels like playing nice in 20 days!!

Yesterday, the Boston Marathon qualifying standards were reduced by 5 minutes. There has already been a lot of commentary in this community, which has been great to see.

I’m sure many runners have different opinions about the changes. But I just want to remind you that a time standard doesn’t define you. 5 minutes will not break you. Do not let 11.5 seconds per mile take away your dreams!!
Seriously, let’s get pumped about these new challenges.
To those of you who feel like the impossible just became even less so, or for those of you who were not accepted for Boston 2019 due to the aggressive cutoff: A BQ is just a time standard. Your PR? Is freaking amazing. It’s unique. You earned it. It’s yours. Never let the 3:35 in the distance take away the glory of your personal best.

To those of you toeing the line soon with a 3:35 in mind… I know. It’s crazy timing.
As if you already didn’t have to run 5 minutes faster than the existing standard to guarantee acceptance, the elusive goal time itself has officially been written in stone a full 11.5 seconds per mile faster.
But don’t let this get to you. Let this fuel you, as a BQ dream has this whole way.
Don’t forget the diligent training you have done all summer long. You’ve been preparing for this. And if you run a PR and not a BQ, don’t you dare let an arbitrary standard take away your joy of a hard earned PERSONAL BEST.
A 3:30 is hard but so was 3:35. Running either of those times (or any finishing time!) is something to be proud of, regardless of whether you get to run Boston for doing so.

And if you’re feeling like a BQ is still ALL you want in the future, then LETS GET READY TO WORK BABY. It’s 11.5 seconds per mile. You are stronger than 11.5 seconds. You are stronger than 300 seconds. You were getting that 3:35? Well you’re getting that 3:30.
Keep striving for your dream, remain positive, and keep encouraging yourself. Reaching your goal just got a little more badass, so don’t give up

LOTS of thoughts this morning. My mind was busy. I was torn between GMP and pushing the pace a bit - honestly it’s easier for me to lean into a faster pace than to slow down to GMP. But up-tempo won yet again - which did cause me to freak out a little that I haven’t run any GMP miles in the past 11 weeks. Hard not to think about - what if I started sooner? What if I did more strength training? What if I set a goal sooner? Just need to remember where I started and not stress (injured and could barely run 7 mi!). Gotta love when the taper crazies kick in even before peak week

Would rather be flying down hill in the mountains, but last night was a very flat slug paced shake out. Tonight is some very slow hills (edit: went to spin class instead). I have no idea what my strategy is - I’m not really sticking to any training plan per say, but with 5 weeks to go until #MarineCorpsMarathon, I’m just listening to my body.
This week is about recovery. And then I’m gonna crush it for 2 weeks. And then taper. And then run a marathon. And that ends phase one of training (I mean, if all goes to plan at least.) Big things on deck. Big goals I want to accomplish. Who else has planned races through the end of 2019?

Thought for the day :: As I transition from the trails to the road to prepare for the @nycmarathon – I will also shift my nutrition a bit. I won’t be logging as many miles, so I won’t need as many calories.
