after rewatching umbrella academy again i have decided that i don’t want to dislike luther anymore and so im making a list of things i like him for:

• asking ben’s consent to time travel
• telling claire all those things for allison
• stopping diego from murdering five (twice)
• getting Pissed when hazel attacked vanya
• playing “i think we’re alone now”
• carrying drunk five bridal style
• “i heard all about you too”
• being soft in general

please add to the list

I’m going to add onto this because I think Luther needs more love. He does some questionable to down right stupid things, but I do think he’s trying his best. And all of the characters are flawed. That’s what makes the show so great to watch in my opinion! If they were all perfect or even all overly flawed, I’d be so bored.

Anyway! 

Luther Things!

• Luther manages to get Five to open up about the end of the world (and is the most persistent with Five).
• Luther throws himself/shoves Five behind him in order to take a bullet for his brother.
• He wrote poems while on the moon.
• He’s the only one who stays with Allison until she wakes up.
• Luther has lots of little models so he clearly liked building models when he was younger.
• I’ve noticed a good amount of books so he likes to read most likely.
• He dances like an adorable little dork.
• Luther had a little plant on the moon! And he took care of it. How cute is that!
• He pushes Diego and Allison out of the way of the chandelier and takes the hit.
• He manages to get through to Five to come up with an alternate plan to killing four random people on the chance that his math is correct.
• He wasn’t hostile toward Vanya over her book seeing her years later.
• When he goes to spread Dad’s ashes, and they just plop onto the ground, and he thought there’d be wind and ~flair~ and ~drama~. It’s adorable cause he so thought it’d be like in the movies or books, the ashes whisked away on a cool spring breeze. Nope. They just fall to the ground. And he’s momentarily stumped at what to do with his life in that moment.
• The way he doesn’t want to tell them what Five told him about Five finding their bodies, and he just mumbles it into his coffee cup and sips it.
• How he knows there’s something off about Dad’s death. Regardless of what’s wrong, he knows something’s off.
• His expression when Five tells him he’s still a young man and has his whole life ahead of him. Just what do you do when your older brother in his younger body is giving you life advice while waiting on two crazed assassins to enact an even crazier plan? You just go huh.
• He waves to Klaus and Diego when they drive by in the ice cream truck! Confused little wave back!
• Although he tells Five that killing people regardless of guilt or innocence is murder, he doesn’t judge more than that.
• Luther still wants to believe in the good. He’s got his own moral code (thinking Five lived and killed by a code and is upset to find his brother didn’t). He tries to see the good (telling Five he knows he’s still a good person). He tries to find non-killing routes first.
• How awkward and precious he is trying to get into his and Allison’s old fort.
• Luther doesn’t judge Five for Dolores. He knows she means something to him, even if he doesn’t know what that is, and he doesn’t say anything rude about her. He even calls her a her, not an it.
• And I guess we should touch on him and Vanya (because I can hear people going, “But! He did the thing! That means he’s BAD.”). I’ve watched that scene a lot. He is not happy to knock her out. His face is not that of someone getting revenge for someone else hurting a loved one. He’s clearly upset. He’s had to make a hard choice on limited information. This is not a post to judge that choice, or any other choice he made. (That may come later if I decide to take notes on all the bad choices all the characters made in ten episodes. I have a lot of thoughts on all of them and all the things they do, and i love all the characters on this show.) He made a hard choice, and he was willing to make that choice. And it isn’t something he’s delighting in. He’s taking no satisfaction over what he’s doing. If he did, I would instantly dislike him. But he’s not at all pleased with himself. And he is gentle with her when she’s passed out. (Let’s not even go into details on how easily he could have just killed her. A post for another day.) He doesn’t potato sack her over his shoulder and toss her in the anechoic chamber. Nope. He catches her gently and carriers her in his arms.

In conclusion, Luther is super flawed, just like the rest. But, just like the rest, he’s got good stuff, too. Cute stuff and sweet stuff and goofy stuff and good stuff. He, too, deserves love and understanding. And, who knows, maybe one day I’ll write some more about The Umbrella Academy one day.
