“Paw Me Up” (喵喵爪)

Physics is the study of the universe, from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest galaxies. It can also explain luck, since all of life is a matter of cause and effect. While it seems arbitrary and without method there is a very calculated system behind it all. The difference lies in how we perceive opportunities or mischances. UCLA Professor Maia Young finds that personality and attitude play into luck more than we realize. Being optimistic about life may just influence you to try harder. It’s this persistence that has a self-reinforcing effect, resulting in a “good luck cycle”. Believe and you will be rewarded! Luck and our behavior are very much intertwined and connected at the hip. The jīnmāo (招财猫) or Chinese lucky golden cat, is a symbol of wealth and prosperity ubiquitous in Asian cultures. Adorning businesses, homes, and windows of all kinds, author Katherine M. Ball describes it as “a simple and popular form of magic”. A magic trick that’s sure to sweep you off your feet and never let go.

“Blinky” (红色幽灵)

It’s the thrill of the chase for me, truly it is. I’m kind of an expert when it comes to these things. Believe me I’ve been working incessantly since my creation in 1980! Around here I’m known as the commander of the ghostly foursome. Obstinate, headstrong, relentless. Some athletes are made, but I was born ready baby! Hunting, pursuing, tailing Pac-Man day in and day out. It’s only living… “It’s a living” I always say!  When my eyes focus on that greedy man, I can’t help but run after him. And run I do. Left, right, up, down, backwards, and forwards! I’m there, I’m always there. You know, I never understood his need for over indulgence and consumption. What is that even about? I prefer the simpler things in life. But hey that’s just me. You do you, and let me focus on my task. I am a man of my word. This haunting is one you won’t forget.

“Egg Mc Manfen” (吉士蛋满分)

It’s truly amazing to be able to see the ordinary through a new lens, take Andy Warhol for example. He shared his love for the classic “Hamburger” (1985) through his art. If you’re not convinced yet may I suggest watching “Andy Warhol Eating a Hamburger” (1982) slathered in Heinz tomato ketchup? Picture it, the most iconic pop artist doing something so… mundane, it suddenly becomes an otherworldly experience! Maybe the problem is we’ve been focusing on catching up with life, we forget to look up at the stars every once in a while. Think about it when was the last time you did something for the very first time? In many cases this is simply accomplished by changing your perspective, like looking at the clouds through a kaleidoscope and realizing you hold all the universes in the palm of your hand. In Chinese culture there’s an expression, bao chi tong xin (保持童心) which means to be young at heart and it’s in this way we can explore life through a new lens. So, find a mysteriously poetic character in one of Andrei Tarkovsky movies you adore, or take a dive in Roy Lichtenstein’s fascinating comic book world and have a romantic stroll with a girl with a hair ribbon. The world is your oyster so start to enjoy all the juicy flavors it has to offer!

“Tales From The Teapot” (一壶千金)

Time is all around us, we are affected by it in every aspect of our lives, but how should we view our relationship with it? Scientists imagine the internal clock as a counting pacemaker, the more pulses you count the longer a given duration seems. Our sense of time in the present versus our recollection of it, results in contradictory impressions of the concept of time. In the present it is experienced through emotions and sensations, while looking back it’s a different perspective. When we are enjoying the moment, it always ends before we realize it. However when reminiscing, time seems stretched out again because our minds play back these stories like Tarkovsky’s “Andrei Rublev” (1966). Sometimes we don’t need to follow the accelerating tempo of this world, take your time to observe every splatter of Jackson Pollock’s “Mural” (1943) and feel its intensity. Maria Abramovic used to teach her students to spend ten minutes to drink a cup of water and use all their senses to feel every sip. From time to time, indulge yourself to perceive the world around you. Count the drips from the teapot. Feel the rhythm and vibrations. After all, life is merely droplets of time. How will you fill your cup?

“I’m All Over You” (我迷恋你)

You’ve got me in a steamy sweaty pitch-perfect panic the way you look right now. I can’t decide which part of your body to focus favor on when each little land-mine-lot of your hot real estate makes me want to die. Knowing you won’t look that way forever. Knowing I won’t be here forever to look at you even if you somehow did. How your tan is just the right tone and your hair the right length and your height the right heighth, well, I’ve decided to become a great scientist. The greatest. All and only in hopes of halting an aging process that’s sure soon to crumble the mesmerizing monument of you. You have a ruthless monopoly on my senses and attention. Use it while you can. I’m all over you. For now.

“Nails Before Males”

The artist’s hand is unlike any other. It moves with ease while also holding purpose and intent. The hand that holds the brush prepares for an elegant dance of vivid strokes. Delicate fingers reaching for the right tool, bending, snapping, stretching, fiddling. The impatient hand is fierce and relentless. An instrument of creation, operating with acute precision. Behold the hands, how they promise and entice. Conjuring an enchanting spell… Are you falling in love?
In his book “De Anima” (c. 350 BC), Aristotle explains, “It follows that the soul is analogous to the hand; for as the hand is a tool of tools, so the mind is the form of forms and sense the form of sensible things.” Hands are tools themselves by which we are able to utilize tools, in a similar way that the mind is a form by which we apprehend other forms. The artist’s hand brings forth life and love and lust. It conveys emotions and force and commands. Which makes the eyes envious of the artist’s hands.

“Mischief Opera” (闹剧)

It is a universal of human experience. From the womb we make silly contorted faces, force smiles, nod maniacally, roll our eyes dramatically, and stretch our pliant skin over the armature of our bones to express our complex, deeply held emotions. I am a rubber-faced clown. I have never been verbal owing to a shock in my childhood. Every emotion I have ever wanted to communicate I have interpreted through flexing my rubber face. Before I had mastered the techniques of my tragicomic art, I was sent by my family to study under that old master of non-verbal communication Marceau - except I never don white paint or tights or opera make-up to share my feelings. Instead of writing these lines I could describe my thoughts in a repertoire of mime. There is no greater pleasure than the memory of making faces with my friend Xia, whose family were likewise flummoxed by her refusal to speak. Exiled to the back seat as our parents sped across mountain ranges from snaking autobahn to autobahn to see the next specialist who might cure our ailment we terrorized innocent truck drivers for days on end. Some laughed, some cried. Some, the burliest of them, threw bouquets of kisses at our silent opera.

“Wrinkled Spectrum” (纹谱)

It is said that a tree’s age may be revealed if the circles within the bark are added together. The wide rings tell us that it was a good growing season with plenty of rainfall. Darker areas mean that the tree wasn’t growing much because of the lack of nutrients and less sunlight while other markings tell about floods, fires and insect damage. Then just what do the wrinkles on a pug tell one about his personality? Is he friendly? What was he given to eat whilst growing, or how much exercise did he get by chasing his own tail? Perhaps he’s just an avid thinker and his forehead wrinkles up when he’s in deep concentration, or he strongly believes that he’s George Clooney. Truth is, the answer doesn’t matter, because they’re just too irresistible.

“Fenghuang Rising” (凤凰崛起)

Legacies and chicken legs (鸡腿!) have more in common than you think. For starters, the juicier they are, the quicker they decay. This is because of a trend called regression toward the mean, or the averaging out of traits over generations. It’s why Einstein’s children weren’t, well, Einstein, and why Hitler’s secret kids weren’t evil assholes. Regression toward the mean. You might even say it happens to institutions and empires. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty ruled for 61 years and left behind a relatively consolidated China firmly under Manchu rule: rebellions crushed, money in the bank, and plenty of potatoes and corn in the pantry. And when he was gone, he was gone. Chinese Fenghuang might look like the Western Phoenix, but their mythologies are very different. There is no rebirth in fire for the Fenghuang. They are Gods, partners to dragons, who are harbingers of peace and harmony. And the legacy of a mythology is like the idea of a chicken leg: it’s the refined, perfected reflection of the thing. What’s better than the essence of a chicken leg, the re-remembered smell of juicy, roasted meat?

“Abracadabra” (噼啪啦)

The earliest record of magic is found in an Egyptian papyrus dated around 2500 BCE. In it we can see a magician performing an animal decapitation trick for the pharaoh. As the story goes, the severed heads are magically replaced, and the magician then proceeds to make prophecies to the king. There is a painting dating back to the 21st century BCE from the tomb wall of Baqet III, depicting two men engaging in what can be interpreted as the first “Cup and Balls” routine. However, this is all conjecture. The first reliably documented magic trick dates to around 50 CE. A group of magicians called “The Acetabularii” performed the cups and balls routine in ancient Rome using stones and small vinegar cups. One can wonder what is it about the illusion or performance that has been enticing humans throughout history? Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca the Younger expresses “it is the very trickery that pleases me. But show me how the trick is done, and I have lost my interest therein.” Humans are curious by nature. Mystifying fantasies, death defying acts, flickering light tricks… it’s all simply part of the fun. Go on give us a clap!

“Chapi Chapo” (肖皮查波)

Where did all the people go? How often do you get an entire beach to yourself? My oh my, oo lala. What do you do when your world is a playground, open to all possibility? Why, you make your dreams come true of course! It’s just that sometimes your dreams are simple, like lounging around in a bathing suit while warm air breezes off the water and around your body. Simple isn’t always easy though. Example: Robert Rauschenberg’s “Erased de Kooning Drawing”, an artwork through which Rauschenberg completely erased one of de Kooning’s original drawings, framed it, and presented it as his own work. Simple? Yes. Easy? For no one. de Kooning liked his drawing; Rauschenberg burned through 15 erasers and one month to get the job done. The point here is that for security (and especially for security through freedom) sacrifices must be made. Sartre would say that freedom is necessary, that it is just another word for existence. But he would also agree that it is damning, carrying with it responsibilities for all the world. When Sartre gets into your head, playing on the beach feels less like a holiday and more like possibilities being consumed.

“Wild Blue” (野蓝)

It’s a #blue#butterfly day, and the #sky is such because particles in Earth’s atmosphere scatter sunlight in all directions. In 1871, Lord Rayleigh published a paper explaining this phenomenon in great detail. The optical phenomenon known as Rayleigh Scattering, refers to the dispersing of #electromagnetic radiation, such as #light, by particles of a smaller wavelength. Out of all the colors, blue light travels as the smallest waves and results in that wild blue presented on the skies each day. Join the dance of the one-day butterflies, the mythological nymphs, enchanting triplets twirling in the blue heavens. The word for butterfly in formal Greek is “psyche”, as it’s believed to be the soul of the dead. It’s also the name of a mortal woman who was released from death by #Zeus and granted immortality. Psyche’s mythological image in ancient art is portrayed with grand butterfly wings. Freed from death, the body of the soul flutters joyously into the forever blue.
