#ostara
Easter/Ostara (1901) by Johannes Gehrts. The Goddess Ēostre/*Ostara flies through the heavens surrounded by Roman-inspired putti, beams of light, and animals. Germanic peoples look up at the Goddess from the realm below. From ‘Walhall: Germanische Götter- und Heldensagen’, 1901.
“In olden time the English people – for it did not seem fitting to me that I should speak of other people’s observance of the year and yet be silent about my own nation’s – calculated their months according to the course of the moon. Hence, after the manner of the Greeks and the Romans (the months) take their name from the Moon, for the Moon is called mona and the month monath.
The first month, which the Latins call January, is Giuli; February is called Solmonath; March Hrethmonath; April, Eosturmonath; May, Thrimilchi; June, Litha; July, also Litha; August, Weodmonath; September, Halegmonath; October, Winterfilleth; November, Blodmonath; December, Giuli, the same name by which January is called. …
Nor is it irrelevant if we take the time to translate the names of the other months. … Hrethmonath is named for their Goddess Hretha, to whom they sacrificed at this time. Eosturmonath has a name which is now translated "Paschal month”, and which was once called after a Goddess of theirs named Eostre, in whose honour feasts were celebrated in that month. Now they designate that Paschal season by her name, calling the joys of the new rite by the time-honoured name of the old observance. Thrimilchi was so called because in that month the cattle were milked three times a day…“

I am home. It is Wednesday and I should be at work, but a migraine has commanded otherwise. I felt the first uneasy stirrings last night while hiding candy-filled eggs and overstuffed baskets for my sons, but I thought a good night’s sleep would set me to rights. Nope. Instead of working I am in bed, notebook propped on a pillow, a cool cloth on my forehead, listening to birds outside my window. I suppose there are worse ways to welcome Ostara.

First, if you aren’t familiar with what a blog hop is, here’s the TL/DR version. Bloggers all write about the same theme at the same time on the same day. We have been doing this every year since 2012.
For this Ostara (or Mabon for those in the more southern regions), we were given two themes by our wranglers. For this blog, I chose theme 1 which asked us, “What card or cards would you say represent you either professionally or personally?”

In light of what is going on in the world today, I know this Sabbat is particularly tough on everyone.
This is supposed to be the time of year when we are celebrating a return of the productive time. The time of the year when we get all amped up for projects and planting. And going out celebrating life.
Instead most of us are feeling anxious and staying away from people as much as we can.
We are wondering how can we can celebrate a holiday about returning hope and new life, when all of this is going on.
I think you have to define that hope for yourself.
Be cautious but do not let this year steal your hope. Be kind when everyone else has “every man for himself” mentality. Be still and let your anxiety pass. Be strong; you are not powerless.
Rest if you can. Be productive if you can.
We will get through this.
Your best is good enough

The only change I made to their recipe was to replace the 3 chicken eggs the box called for with a single goose egg!
I had been reading about goose eggs being good for baking rich desserts, and I thought Ostara would be a perfect opportunity to try it out! I’m lucky enough to live near a fantastic Asian market where they currently had plenty of goose eggs in stock!
Below I have included pictures of my cake, and the gorgeous egg which my husband was able to save the shell of for me!
