It’s that time of the year again; for many of us educators, tutors, teachers and mentors; the end is nigh. The end that I’m talking about is the end of the Chinese school year, which like the American school year ends in June rather than November (Aussie Aussie Aussie) So now that it’s April, some among us (including me) have begun casual conversations about contract re-negotiation that will…

Hello lovely followers! I am writing one of my final research papers to finish off my BFA in photography and I need your help! Have any of you (or anyone you know) moved abroad to pursue art? / Or is anyone currently an artist in Australia? Text me, message me, or send them my way. Thanks in advance!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who lost a family member this year.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who’s family is states away and feel alone.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who’s celebrating with friends this year because that’s the closest to family they have.

And happy Thanksgiving to the homeless, to anyone locked up, and anyone overseas who can’t celebrate.

Everyone have fun, but also remember this isn’t a happy time of year for everybody. Check up on your friends.

At 27 years old, I finally got on a plane and went overseas for the first time in my life.  Finally walking though the International Departures gate was so exhilarating!

Bali

Bali was very hot and very humid.  I can withstand ridiculously cold temperatures, but the downside is that it makes me extremely heat sensitive.  What was mildly hot for my partner was Satan’s sauna for me.  If I wasn’t either near water or in airconditioning, I was suffering really badly.

I think if I could bear the conditions a little better, it would have been more enjoyable.  I know those countries will always be like that, but I really couldn’t say I enjoyed myself.  I don’t care about the excessive sweating and whatnot, but always feeling weak wasn’t great.  I always made sure I was well hydrated, but it was just too hot for me to handle.

Other than conditions, I think we also made a mistake in where we stayed/visited.  We stayed in Seminyak, and generally ventured around the Ubud and Kuta areas.  In hindsight I should have researched a bit more, but my partner was adamant that we shouldn’t plan.

Next time:  Definitely won’t go to the heavily populated tourist areas.  It was dirty and just awful.  So many Aussies.  If I wanted to see drunk, rowdy Aussies, I’d have stayed home.

The plane ride

The plane ride was squishy and boring.  On the way to Bali, I was seated next to a fat guy in the aisle seat which made it more squishier than normal.  The flight took 5.5 hours, which in comparison to most overseas flights is actually really short, but you have to remember, the longest I’ve ever been on a plane for is 2 hours.  We travelled at night, so there was absolutely nothing to see out the window, and we had no in-flight entertainment.  I literally played Candy Crush for 5 hours straight while my partner slept.

On the way back home… it was a nightmare.  Thankfully it was only 4.5 hours, but it was an overnight flight and I was suffering from a really bad bout of Bali Belly.  You can imagine how uncomfortable that was, especially considering I was stuck in the middle seat next to a guy who wouldn’t move for me when I desperately needed the bathroom.

Next time:  I will bring a book, install better games on my phone, or purchase in-flight movies…and better medicine!

The Robert Alexander Salon: From Lebanon to Lahore

The Nishat adds another much-needed amenity to its premises — the Robert Alexander Salon and Spa. It has created quite a stir in Lahore with its über modern interior and fantastic installations.

“I wanted The Nishat to be a one-stop shop for our clients, and it is important for a hotel to have a good salon,” says Iqra Hasan Mansha, owner of The Nishat.

“Not only is it important to cater to your spa needs, it is also vital to have good in-house stylists,” she adds. With guests flying in from Karachi and Islamabad for fashion and bridal weeks, and choosing to stay at The Nishat, it only seemed fit to have a state-of -the-art salon to cater to their hair and style needs. This is why it is great that Lebanese salon Robert Alexander has opened its doors to the Lahore market.

“I have always felt that the Lebanese have a great way with hair and are very artistic,” continues Mansha, “when I met Robert, I knew it was time to bring his services to Lahore and bring the hotel not just a great stylist but also an international touch.” (more)

The Pakistani team will compete with 114 teams from various countries at the 16th International Formula Student Race, scheduled to be held at the Silverstone Circuit, Northamptonshire, UK, from June 9 to 13.

The 600CC sports car, that can reach the speed of 120km/hour within four second, is named NAS-14, after the late dean of NUST, Naval Captain Nadeem Ahmed Shaheed. (more)

Taking flight: Surfing the air above Chitral’s mountains

It is the simplest form of human flight—paragliding. All you really need is a wing, which is small enough to fit into a backpack. The only other thing you need is height and Chitral has plenty of that to offer.

It is here, amid the silent mountain air that you can look down on lush green fields and sweep past icy slopes. Chitral’s topography is so well suited to paragliding that international visitors have long been attracted to it, and in fact, they are the ones who made it popular with the locals around 2005 onwards.

One of the frequent foreign visitors is American Brad Sander, an expert pilot in the Hindukush region who has broken several records. On his second trip to Pakistan, for example, he set the distance record for paragliding on the Asian continent, flying 224km from Booni to Karimabad, as cited by Sports Illustrated.“It wasn’t until I came to Pakistan in May of 2007,” he wrote on his blog,“that I felt the overwhelming urge to combine my love of travel and flying in a commercial way so that I could share this adventure with others.” He urged people to come paragliding at Shandur 2014 where it has become a regular feature at the polo festival. Innovating science education: First Pakistani to get Howard Hughes professorship

Boston University’s Hamid Zaman and his students have developed a detector for counterfeit and defective drugs flooding poorer countries, among other technologies to improve medical care in the developing world.

Zaman is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at BU’s College of Engineering and a columnist for The Express Tribune. But now he has another feather in his cap.

He is one of the 15 professors across the United States – and the first Pakistani – to receive the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Professorships, awarded to researchers to introduce innovative techniques for undergraduate science education. And for this, the professorship confers a five-year $1 million grant to each HHMI professor. (complete news)

Ireland recruits 115 junior doctors from Pakistan to keep going

Irish hospitals are appointing 115 medical trainees from Pakistan to resume services from next month, according to independent.ie.

Hospitals in Ireland are in the middle of another major shortage of junior doctors that has been terribly affecting the emergency.

“There is an ongoing vacancy rate of 100 to 120 junior doctors,” said a spokeswoman for Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE).

The reason of the shortage has been stated as the shunning of hospital posts by Irish-trained junior doctors in Ireland and their moving abroad for training. (more)
