LIVE

Packed home a bowl of YoutiaoRojak (S$3) from Dough Culture(小麥家) at the basement of Sun Plaza. Despite the price increase, the container is only half full and they are also stingy with the prawn paste dressing. :( Since I had a slice of pineapple sitting in the fridge, might as well slice it up and add to the dish. The tangy sweet pineapples and crispy youtiao coated in savoury sweet sauce made for a yummy before dinner snack.

Dinner is from the Vegetarian stall in the recently opened food court in Sun Plaza. Here, you got mock sweet & sour pork, stir-fried gourd and a braised bean curd. The next box comes with preserved Chinese mustard (梅菜), stewed potato and mock curry chicken & potato.

Also from the same stall is this VegetarianRojak. I wondered what they substituted for the usual prawn paste used in making the sticky sauce here as this local snack tasted as good as the real McCoy.

1. Fist: Make a fist around the epi-pen, don’t place your thumb/fingers over either end

2. Flick the blue cap off

3. Fire. Press down into the outer thigh (the big muscle in there), hold for 10 seconds before removing (the orange cap will cover the needle). Bare skin is best but the epi-pen will go through clothing. Avoid pockets and seams.

- Ring an ambulance even if everything seems to be fine!

More info for those who have asked -

  • Bare skin is best, but epi-pens go through clothes so don’t stress too much over that
  • Always, always ring the paramedics after using an epi-pen or even have someone else do it straight away. Another dose may be needed which paramedics can administer.
  • Location, location. Apologies if outer thigh was a bit vague! If you stand up and allow your arms to hang by your side where your fingers fall against your leg is a great place.
  • Legal issues, in Australia first aiders are protected by a Good Samaritan Act whereby the provision of reasonable assistance to those injured or ill is protected by law. I’m unsure how this translates to around the world but I’ll do some research
  • Thank you all for reblogging and getting this message out there, and also for sharing your stories! A lot happened while I was asleep but you definitely made my day and could very well have saved someone else’s just by sharing some information and getting educated! Thank you!

Kung Pao Brussels SproutsServings: 4Prep Time: 15 minsCook Time: 30 minsTotal Time: 45 minutesSTUFFS

Kung Pao Brussels Sprouts

Servings: 4
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 45 minutes

STUFF
Sprouts:
2 pounds Brussels sprouts
2 tablespoons olive oil

Kung Pao sauce:
2 tablespoons reduced-sodium tamari* or soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
½ to 2 teaspoons sriracha, to taste
2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced

Garnishes:
⅓ cup roasted peanuts (either salted or unsalted)
⅓ cup chopped green onion (both green and white parts), about 3 green onions
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (optional)
Red pepper flakes (optional)

STEPS
To prepare the Brussels sprouts: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Trim the nubby ends and any discolored leaves off the Brussels sprouts, then cut the sprouts in half lengthwise.

Transfer the sprouts to a large, rimmed baking sheet (I covered mine in parchment paper first for easy cleanup), then toss them with about 2 tablespoons olive oil, until they are coated with a light, even layer of oil. Arrange the sprouts in an even layer, flat sides down, and roast for 25 to 30 minutes, tossing halfway, until they are tender and deeply caramelized on the edges.

Meanwhile, to prepare the sauce: In your smallest saucepan, add the tamari or soy sauce, honey or maple syrup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ½ teaspoon sriracha and garlic. Whisk until combined, then taste and add more sriracha if you’d like (mine was just right with 1 ½ teaspoons sriracha, but I love spicy food).

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until the sauce has thickened, about 5 minutes. It’s done when, if you take it off heat long enough for it to stop bubbling and carefully tilt the pan back and forth, the sauce will slide down the pan rather than slosh.

Transfer the roasted sprouts to a medium serving bowl. Pour the sauce over the sprouts and toss to coat. Add the peanuts, green onion and optional cilantro and toss again. Serve immediately, with red pepper flakes sprinkled on top if you’d like a little extra heat (and color).

NOTES
MAKE IT GLUTEN FREE: This dish is gluten free as long as you use gluten-free tamari, which is a variety of soy sauce that is usually (but not always, check the label) gluten free. I always use tamari instead of soy sauce because I prefer the flavor of it! Look for tamari next to the soy sauce in the Asian aisle of the grocery store.
MAKE IT VEGAN: Simply swap maple syrup for the honey instead when making the sesame glaze.
MAKE IT PEANUT-FREE: Just omit the peanuts. You might like a sprinkle of sesame seeds instead.
CHANGE IT UP: Broccoli would be a fantastic substitute for the sprouts, and probably cheaper, too!

Blah. Peanut died today.

She’s been sick a long time, I suspect with the same internal tumors her brother had because it was all the same symptoms. But she held on so well and was still having good days, so I was putting off taking her to the vet to be PTS.

At least it was expected. Whisper was healthy Friday, odd Saturday, and dead Sunday. Blaaaah just lame, I raised Peanut from birth so it feels really sucky.

RIP beautiful girls - you were bestest friends so it sort of makes sense for you to have gone together. <3

Happy Beanie Bday to: Peanut the elephant!
