Story time: I started reading a book about 23 hours ago and just finished it. Also in that time, I slept for 10 hours, spent time with family, was at work, etc. Anyway, I enjoyed the book (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,) but it felt like it flew by. So after I finished I looked up the word count because what are pages? Pages are meaningless. I only function in word counts anymore.
The estimate I found was 58,580. My immediate reaction was “oh, that’s why. That’s nothing!” But what a shitty response. Because no. That’s not nothing. That’s a whole. Damn. Book. An entire novel! And fic authors regularly bust out 30k, 50k, 100k, 150k words. AND THEY DO IT FOR FREE. WHILE WORKING AND LIVING THEIR LIVES.
So anyway, thank your favorite fic author today because they deserve it. Because they’re amazing. They’re the MVPs.

SO TRUE. We really aren’t talking enough about how sleep deprivation ravages our brains and the connection to capitalism run amok. I recently read a book that deep dived on this topic and it made me realize how interconnected survival-driven “workaholic” behaviors, mental illness, and abusive behaviors were in my family growing up. My parent who routinely worked 100-120 hours a week (yes you read that correctly) was never operating on enough sleep to have any semblance of a healthy existence.
I ended up having a really interesting conversation with some people at the bus stop today. They were getting out of some sort of ‘clean and sober’ meeting and had starting saying how they were so bored because they didn’t have anything to do, and had to stay at home because all their old friends would pull them back. So I said something like, ‘So this is the time to do all the stuff your parents told you they didn’t have money/time for!’
“Whatcha mean?”
“You know, like when you were five and you REALLY wanted to have that toy or do that thing and you were like, ‘Please mom please I gotta have this I gotta go do this’ and they went ‘Hell no you think I’m paying for that do you want to goddamn EAT?’ “
And this light went on in their eyes. The lady is going to go check thrift stores for an Easybake Oven and I told her about Wilton cake decorating classes. The dude is going to Griffith Park and ride horses, because, ‘I always wanted to be a cowboy, and you can’t drink when you’re on a horse ‘cause you’ll fucking die!’

it doesn’t even have to be the trauma of bad parents. It can be the everyday human pain of “I lost my favorite toy when I was 12 and never found it again.” It can be the parents who loved you and fully sympathized with your desire to have the thing, but honey, we just don’t have the money right now. It can be the fact that you no longer live with your brother who’s highly allergic to dogs, so you can finally have the dog you always wanted that you always understood why you couldn’t get, and you accepted it, but it was still painful. It can be the Atari games or Nintendo games or Sega games that don’t exist anymore that you played in your childhood.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized – you don’t have to be suffering some great trauma, something unusual and particularly damaging, to feel pain. You don’t have to have lost your entire home in a hurricane to have lost something you truly valued and miss a lot. You don’t have to have had toxic parents to have been denied some things you wanted because they just didn’t have the money, or the resources, or the health.
Time is pain. Loss and disappointment are part of human existence. But you don’t have to try to justify why your specific loss or disappointment is especially bad to admit that it hurts and do something to rectify that hurt in some small way.
I honestly don’t care if this ends up being an unpopular opinion or not, because it’s something that needs to be said.
It’s not just Damon.
Damon isn’t the only one in Gorillaz who feels like he needs to keep his fans happy all the time by impressing them with everything he does. We place Damon up on a pedestal because he’s the “uwu good boy” who can do no harm, but Jamie is part of Gorillaz as well.
You may be thinking: “Yeah. No shit. We know Jamie is part of Gorillaz.”
But here’s the thing - we take Jamie for granted. MAJORLY for granted.
This is the SECOND time he’s wanted to have characters talk in a music video (first being Strobelite) but couldn’t because the people above him wouldn’t allow it. He couldn’t even add a model of Russel.
He’s got fans on his Instagram pressuring him by rushing him to finish his work. They aren’t always easily impressed. Things like “when’s the music video going to be out?” and the people who say “I personally think ____ should’ve had a music video instead.”
Give the man a break. Gorillaz has ALWAYS been a collaborative project - it’s not just all about the music.
I mean, he can’t even get the rights for Ace despite wanting to use his character for so much more than a temporary Murdoc replacement.
He took on the FreeMurdoc hashtag to give the fans something interesting and to show that he does listen, he even pushed back the final chat ALMOST A MONTH to add in answers to questions that we really want.
He’s been wanting the Gorillaz cartoon from the beginning but he never had the budget to do so, which is why a lot of the earlier music videos lacked proper animation (specifically tomorrow comes today) and there’s music videos which were NEVER produced either. He had to cancel a fucking movie because there wasn’t much places that wanted to take the idea on board.
He gave us the live interviews so we could witness characters actually communicating with the real world.
Fans are still upset about where the new cartoon is - and I’d just like to say that just because the cartoon has been announced, doesn’t mean it’s ready. The original idea was for him to have the story go alongside Humanz, but he changed that for us. He wanted to give us a different story that didn’t have any specific guidelines to follow, but one that still tied in with the main story.
He’s given us documentaries, games and he’s the co-creator of the best virtual band TO DATE… and much more.
And yet… somehow he still goes underappreciated. You know why Jamie was invited onto stage during the performance? Because he’s a part of this as well - and we treat him like he’s just the guy who draws the characters.
When it comes to who to pick on, Jamie seems to be the fan favourite. We put bullshit on him as well, but the difference between Jamie and Damon, is that Jamie’s struggles seem to go unnoticed.
Jamie has always wanted to give us his best. I have full faith that he will deliver. It doesn’t have to be an instantaneous thing, because a piece of art takes time. Literally and metaphorically.
The thing that pisses me off about Steve going back in time to be with Peggy at the end of Endgame isn’t the fact he left Sam and Bucky (Although that’s pretty shitty of him) its how much it disregards Peggy and her feelings and her story. Steve did love Peggy and Peggy loved Steve, but his ‘death’ was absolutely necessary for certain things to happen.
Without Steve dying, Peggy wouldn’t have went on to have as much respect in the SSR, she wouldn’t have founded SHIELD and she wouldn’t have fallen in love with Daniel Sousa (Who I’ll get to in a second). And while I have no idea how the actual fuck they worked time travle and the butterfly effecf in Endgame, Peggy creating SHIELD seems like it is pretty important right?
Even if, somehow, it did become a thing, Howard Stark would never have become obsessed with the super serum, meaning he wouldn’t have died in 1991, Obi wouldn’t have gotten piwer over SI and Tony wouldn’t have become Iron Man.
And Daniel Sousa. This one REALLY annoys me. PEGGY FOUND HAPPINESS. If Steve truely loved Peggy, he wouldn’t have taken away the life she had made for herself, before Peggy dies from old age she even says she had a good life and tells Steve how happy she was and how HE should go find happiness. Going back in time not only completely destroys a good chunk of the timeline of the avengers but also shows us that Steve viewed Peggy as no more than a prize for him to get when he finally put the shield down.
In Agent Carter we see how Peggy’s lofe continues on without Steve, how she got over that and how Steve didn’t fucking define her life (LIKE LITERALLY EVERY MAN IN THE SHOW TELLS HER) but by Steve going back he undos all of her character development and story.
fuck unique experiences I love discovering that thousands of people did the exact same weird shit I did. we are all so much more similar than we are different and that’s part of the beauty of humanity.
