If you are someone who likes to watch a lot of cop shows, I want you to ask yourself a few questions.

Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate Internal Affairs? Isn’t the job of Internal Affairs to root out the “bad cops”? Isn’t their job to make sure police follow the rules? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic?

Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, hate defense attorneys? Isn’t the defense attorney’s job to protect the rights of all citizens? Isn’t it their job to make sure police follow the law? Isn’t it their job to make sure everyone is treated fairly under the system? Why is that presented as inherently evil or antagonistic?

Why do all TV cops, even the good ones, get upset when citizens invoke their constitutional rights? Don’t those rights exist to ensure all citizens are treated fairly? Don’t they exist to ensure innocent people are not wrongfully incriminated? Why are citizens who invoke their rights presented as dishonest, untrustworthy, or antagonistic?

To be clear, I’ve watched Brooklyn 99 and enjoyed it. I was watching Elementary the other day. But even when I watch shows I like, I make a mental note every time a cop lies, breaks the law, subverts someone’s basic rights, or just generally acts like an asshole to the people the are meant to serve and protect.

How often are they called out on their behavior? How often are they punished for it? How often is it reinforced as correct by the narrative?

When I tell people to be critical of the media they consume that is what I mean. Not simply calling it terrible and moving on, but actually engaging thoughtfully, asking questions, and forming conclusions about what that media is trying to say to you. Then decide whether you want to keep listening, or if it will be better for you in the long run to move on.

Why do only the guilty people ever invoke their right to an attorney? I would invoke my right to an attorney.

Why are protections of innocent people’s rights only ever framed as “slowing the police down” and preventing them from really catching the bad guy? Why is it that every time an officer has an instinct to break the rules, they’re narratively vindicated?

It’s the same question as “but WHY do her superpowers require her to show so much skin?” A writer put that there.

“OLIVIA THOMPSON is a seventeen-year-old living a comfortable middle-class life in the Newland Settlers Confederation. After developing unusual symptoms, she receives a horrifying diagnosis. She is V1 positive, slowly turning into a vampire. The ‘Three-day Law’ gives her two options: Present herself within seventy-two hours at the border of the Vampire Union or submit to summary execution. If she fails to do either, the government will hunt her down.
With a once in a decade blizzard bearing down on her, can Olivia evade her pursuers and make it to the border alive?”

tiktok is doing the same sort of damage to young adults and teenagers that fox news is doing to boomers. i’d even say tiktok is worse with how influential social media is and how it’s beginning to take precedent over actual news.

it’s so interesting the way zoomers will talk about how old folks are so gullible and will believe everything they see on tv just because tucker carlson is the one saying it, but then turn around and listen to some true crime tuber they believe to be the authority on law and order. you are not immune to biased information.

We took inspiration from the collection at Fort George including a poem written by 8384 Private W Hendry of the 2nd Royal Scots: ‘In the Trenches, somewhere in France’

….next week we’ll take a trip to the fort itself and continue our research in-situ.

This too shall pass (x)

this has a very subtle “isn’t the west racist so you should sympathize with them less, the Ukrainians are less sympathetic because they’re benefiting from racism” message. Not openly stated…but you felt a bit less charitable and positive towards Europe and Ukrainians when you read it, didn’t you? That’s not an accident.

here’s the rest of the post with a partial list of Russian propaganda tactics currently being used:

https://eowyntheavenger.tumblr.com/post/678364924203941888/ive-been-really-frustrated-to-see-people-i-was

this kind of stuff is not being posted/tweeted/passed around out of CONCERN for other groups of refugees. This stuff is being pushed specifically by Russia to get people to care LESS about THESE refugees. Look at the tweet. “Begrudge” is a really good word, isn’t it? It’s unusual, it sticks in your mind. “I don’t begrudge them” sort of implies a lot of people do, doesn’t it? Or even that maybe some people should. How interesting.

This. …Some of these old games go WAY back. :/

(Also, as a mildly interesting linguistic side note: colloquial Irish has a specific word for the local form of this: “begrudgery.” [Though the precise Irish-usage definition is a little more nuanced. Normally it indicates a reluctance or refusal to acknowledge someone’s accomplishments, because that person just might be thinking those accomplishments make them somehow better than you / than Average People.])

FAKE NEWS:  $10 per gallon gas pumps!

I don’t know how people keep missing this, as screaming obvious as it is, but if you add another digit to the gas pumps then they don’t max out at $10. They max out at $100.

         …$99.999 to be precise.

ALL GAS PUMPS CAN ALREADY CHARGE $10 PER GALLON!

         …$9.999 to be precise.

All gas pumps, no exceptions, can already charge $10 a gallon. Many can already be set to $100 a gallon. Within 5 to 10 years they all wil.

Why would anyone think otherwise? HOWcan anyone think otherwise?

You Germany, those that wanted,
who died for you -
Still we carry rolled up
Your everlasting colours.

Because who among us is so strong,
And so holy-drunk,
as those, who near Langemark,
Went down while singing?

The path of blood that all had to take,
The sacrificing pious ones -
Only those will become aware of it,
Who come after us.

One day the tree will grow into the stars,
And nothing can rob it of its crown -
O Germany, you eternal dream,
In which we believe!

ca. 1860s, [tintype of an anti-Lincoln propaganda doll]

“A political tintype which makes a strong anti-Lincoln commentary on the issue of slavery. We see a very rare example of a white doll with a black Lincoln doll pinned to her dress.  We have to believe this was a Southern photographer making a statement although it could also be a Southern sympathizer from the North. The proportions of the white doll are also a curiosity as it is extremely long in length and maybe a reference to Lincoln’s long lanky build.”
