The ornately embroidered phulkari is a shared tradition for women across Punjabi social classes and religions. Most of the works on display in “Phulkari: The Embroidered Textiles of Punjab from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection” pre-date the devastating 1947 Partion of the Punjab region into modern day India and Pakistan. The religious division, mass migration, and loss of life leading up to and after the Partition forced many families to leave behind their treasured phulkaris. Despite such upheaval, phulkaris remain a significant symbol of Punjabi identity.

Aspirations occurs in English in initial onsets like in ‘pat’ [pʰæt], ‘tack’ [’tʰæk] or ‘cat’ [’kʰæt]. It is not phonemic, since it doesn’t distinguish meanings, but it’s distinctive in Mandarin e.g. 皮 [pʰi] (skin) vs. 比 [pi] (proportion).
Non-phonemic aspiration occurs in: Tamazight, English, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Kurdish, Persian, Uyghur.
Phonemic aspiration: Sami languages, Icelandic, Faroese, Danish, Mongol, Kalmyk, Georgian, Armenian, North Caucasian languages, Sino-Tibetan languages, Hmong-Mien languages, Austroasiatic languages, Hindi-Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Odya, Bengali, Nepali, Tai-Kadai languages, Nivkh, many Bantu languages (Swahili, Xhosa, Zulu, Venda, Tswana, Sesotho, Macua, Chichewa, and many Amerindian languages (Na-Dene, Siouan, Algic, Tshimshianic, Shastan, Mayan, Uto-Aztecan, Mixtec, Oto-Manguean, Quechua, Ayamara, Pilagá, Toba, etc.)

She got everything right! What an amazing and intricate lehenga - can’t get over the embellishments, details and color. The accessories are perfect.
Makeup was highlighted by the bright lip (which ties in with the color of the lehenga), and a really defined, traditional eye look. Love the way this photo has been taken - classy and timeless! A must have portrait for every bride to cherish in the years to come :)

Hindu Punjabi/Sikh Punjabi chooda ceremony- her mama (maternal uncle) makes her wear the ‘Red and White' set of bangles marking the beginning of her married life ahead. It is that one clear symbol of a newly-wed girl that becomes her identity for a certain period of time till she is supposed to wear it, which could be anywhere between 45 days to a year.
