A Night at Poker Flat | APOD
Four NASA suborbital sounding rockets leapt into the night on January 26, from the University of Alaska’s Poker Flat Research Range. This time lapse composite image follows all four launches of the small, multi-stage rockets to explore winter’s mesmerizing, aurora-filled skies. During the exposures, stars trailed around the North Celestial Pole, high above the horizon at the site 30 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska. Lidar, beams of pulsed green lasers, also left traces through the scene. Operating successfully, the payloads lofted were two Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere Turbulence Experiments (M-TeX) and two Mesospheric Inversion-layer Stratified Turbulence (MIST) experiments, creating vapor trails at high altitudes to be tracked by ground-based observations.

It’s standing, surrounded by stone, since it can remember it has only seen stone and steel. In the beginning there’ve also been humans who kept everything in check. There’s only rarely humans now and they aren’t as soft about it as the first ones had been. Then one day suddenly they quickly closed all doors leading into its room. Shortly after some horrible sirens started blaring and red lights started flashing. It can feel how an automatic part of it takes over, sees a hatch above it open and feels its engines starting. And suddenly it’s flying. High and even higher. It’s happy that it’s free and wants to fly around a bit, but the automatic part that took over flies it in a straight line to a set of numbers. As it looks around it sees many more like itself. Part of them coming from the other side. Then it feels how the automatics start a program that would kill it and it decides to fight against that part. It feels how it’s engine stops working and that it’s now falling freely. It starts remembering what it is and for what purpose it was made. It stops struggling and starts to shut itself off to not have to witness how it hits the ground, how it will die. Also it doesn’t want to think anymore how it’s death will cause many more.
