Event

Earlier this week I had a chance to visit Leiden, Netherlands, where along with Science Now, we’ve prepared a new exhibition for the Leiden Science Center (Oude Sterrewacht).

“Above and Beyond” celebrates the last 100 years of space exploration and creatively reaches out into the imaginary future. I’ve made several illustrations for the “Visions of the Future” section of the exhibition and I’ll share some more detailed preview soon.

If you happen to be in Amsterdam/Leiden/Hague area, drop by to check it out!

SCIENCE IS COMING.

In honor of the release of Game of Thrones Season 6 today, check out these amazing House designs made by students from the Albert Einstein Institute. Each Game of Thrones inspired sigil celebrates a different changing project in physics and space exploration.

House Hubble - Hubble Space Telescope

House ISS - International Space Station

House ITER - Nuclear Fusion Project

House LHC - Large Hadron Collider

House Curiosity - Mars Science Laboratory

House LISA - Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

House JWST - James Webb Space Telescope

House VLA - Very Large Array

I’m super torn because while I’m #teamradioforever, I’m also a lifelong #hubblehugger. I guess if I’m forced to chose, it might have to be House VLA.

-Summer

[HTCharee Peters]

Given last night’s Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere, it’s clearly time for this to make the rounds again! What I forgot to add the first time around was that the students who made this were working on the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) Mission (a space-based version of LIGO). The original post sharing these designs is on LISA’s Facebook Page

Also, I guess I put something out into the universe by saying I’m House VLA because that will officially be the case as of July 1st. ;)

“Hey, What Are You Looking At?”

Video Clip SS235282 (Night Sky Over the Paranal Observatory)

Timelapse of the night sky over the Paranal Observatory, Cerro Paranal, Chile.

A bright meteor streaks at dusk and satellites and planes cross the sky. The southern Milky Way and bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri appear in the sky as well as the Omega Centauri star cluster on the left.

View More Observatory Timelapse Videos

By total light-collecting area, the Paranal is the largest optical-infrared observatory in the Southern Hemisphere. Worldwide, it is second only to the Mauna Kea Observatory on Hawaii.

In the foreground is one of the 1.8 metre axillary telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) interferometer program. The VLT is located at an altitude of 2600 metres in the Atacama Desert.

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is the largest telescope on Paranal. It is composed of four separate 8.2 m (320 in) telescopes. In addition, the four main telescopes can combine their light to make a fifth instrument, the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI).

A Night at Poker Flat | APOD

Four NASA suborbital sounding rockets leapt into the night on January 26, from the University of Alaska’s Poker Flat Research Range. This time lapse composite image follows all four launches of the small, multi-stage rockets to explore winter’s mesmerizing, aurora-filled skies. During the exposures, stars trailed around the North Celestial Pole, high above the horizon at the site 30 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska. Lidar, beams of pulsed green lasers, also left traces through the scene. Operating successfully, the payloads lofted were two Mesosphere-Lower Thermosphere Turbulence Experiments (M-TeX) and two Mesospheric Inversion-layer Stratified Turbulence (MIST) experiments, creating vapor trails at high altitudes to be tracked by ground-based observations.

M66 joins the LMI image gallery! M66 (NGC 3627) is a relatively nearby spiral galaxy, located at a distance of 9.8 Mpc (32 million light-years). M66 is a member of the “Leo Triplet” of galaxies, which include M65 and NGC 3628 (Stay tuned for pictures of the other two!). M66 is highly asymmetrical due to gravitational interactions with the other members in the triplet. This image was not photoshopped (or Instagram filtered) in any way. From 1961 to 1969 the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC), a branch of the U.S. Air Force, set up shop at Lowell to use the Clark Telescope to create lunar maps. These maps were critical for understanding the nature of the lunar surface and some were used by the Apollo astronaut program for determining landing sites. A talented young artist, Patricia Bridges (pictured), served as the primary illustrator. She used an airbrush to record artistic yet accurate renderings of mountains, craters, valleys, and other features of the moon.‪ #‎flashbackfriday‬ #fbf #lowellobservatory #lowell #observatory #flagstaffaz #flagstaff #arizona #moon #moonmapping #science #space #astronomy #clarktelescope #airbrush

Arizona nonprofits do some of the most important work in our state. That’s why we’re asking you to invest in Arizona today on #AZGivesDay by supporting outreach, science, and history at Lowell Observatory. Our goal is to reach 100 donors in 24 hours! Can you help us hit that goal? You don’t even have to live in Arizona to donate. Find our Arizona Gives Day link in our bio.

Lowell Observatory astronomer Phil Massey and his graduate student research assistant Kathryn Neugen

Lowell Observatory astronomer Phil Massey and his graduate student research assistant Kathryn Neugent recently captured this spectacular image of a beautiful spiral galaxy known as M108 using the Discovery Channel Telescope. This image has not been photoshopped in any way; all that has been done is balancing the three colors to provide a close match to what would be seen by eye.

The dark splotches visible in the galaxy are regions of gas and dust silhouetted by the light of stars that lie behind them. Future generations of stars will be born from this material.

Because M108 is 50 million light years away it’s impossible to see individual stars in this galaxy, we see only their collective glow. The stars you see sprinkled across the image are actually in our own Milky Way galaxy. Like raindrops on a windowpane, these stars get in the way when we look out at more distant objects.

The entry road to the observatory, which is not the same route as you would take today, was certainly different a hundred years ago. The gate house built for Harry Hussey, custodian of the 24" Clark Telescope premises, can be seen in the shadows to the left. The house is no longer on Mars Hill however, it burned down in 1936. ‪#‎flashbackfriday‬ #lowellobservatory #lowell #observatory #marshill #flagstaffaz #flagstaff #arizona #FBF #science #space #astronomy
