El Guero: Chocolate Clams and a Flat Bed Full of Hot Sauce

Location: Ensenada, Mexico

Just down the street from La Guerrerense, is another fresh seafood cart that specializes in fresh ceviche and raw shellfish called El Guero. With fewer bells and whistles, and an emphasis on simple, straight forward seafood, you won’t find a bevy of homemade sauces here. Instead, there’s a pick up truck parked in front of the stand with a flatbed that doubles as a hot sauce trolley (I know, why didn’t we think of that?). 

You might be wondering whether or not it is wise to eat raw seafood from a street cart, and your hesitation is just. But, this is an exception. Just steps away from the All Saints Bay, the shellfish could not be any fresher. Look closely, and you’ll notice that pile of clams is squirming and very much alive. The little red feet of the chocolate clams peak out of their shells. These are served with nothing more than a generous dose of fresh lime juice. Feeling adventurous? Order a couple of blood clams. They are less briny than a littleneck clam, super rich and incredible to behold.

After staying a few days off the coast of Maine on Peak’s Island, I traveled back to the mainland to spend some time exploring Portland & Scarborough. Portland rules. It’s a small city with a lively nightlife, shopping center, and food scene. You can’t go wrong with lobster rolls and sweet potato doughnuts, two delicacies I had several times while visiting. The city revolves around the proximity of the sea and you can find anything and everything sea themed, even re-purposed ship sails into tote bags. Twenty minutes south of Portland I visited Scarborough, where they have an even more quiet lifestyle and killer surf beach. Exploring and enjoying the waves and beautiful craggy coastline kept me busy and entertained for days. Visiting Maine again in 2015 is definitely on my list.

I love my mom, but sometimes I get tired of her food. It’s the same thing almost every day: chicken, rice, veggies. I love it, but she hardly experiments with her spices.

I’m never really one for spicy, but damn, I would eat spicy just for this. The ikan bakar is great and they let you split it to spicy and non. Cereal prawns were no short of crunchy and addictive.

My mouth waters as I type this.
