But do not let today become the start of complacency. Let today be what starts a fire for years to come to change the world into a better place.
Let’s dedicate all of the energy we used resisting Trump’s bigoted rhetoric and harmful policies to keeping Biden accountable for making decisions that move us forward.
This election season, we saw millions of new voters register, including millions of Latinx voters. Muslims, black people, Native Americans, LGBT people, and so many women were elected to represent us. For the first time in our nation’s history, over 100 women were elected to the House of Representatives.
Last night was historic not just because of these facts, but also because we took back the House in spite of massive voter suppression efforts.
Our sham of a democracy forced us to wait in three to five-hour-long lines. Our sham of a democracy purged us from the voter rolls. Our sham of a democracy changed our votes from Beto to Ted. Our sham of a democracy “ran out” of paper ballots for voters. Our sham of a democracy demanded that Native Americans living on reservations present a home address or be disenfranchised.This election season, rich, out-of-touch white men did everything they could to take away our voice.
But you cannot silence a movement.
To everyone who voted for harm reduction: thank you.
To those who were beaten, castrated, burned, and murdered so that people other than white men could vote: thank you.I am so proud of us.
And now, we must keep fighting the good fight so that one day, we have a system that is truly by and for the people.
There are some who want to silence us with their blind hatred.
Hope will never be silent.
Love will never be silent.
Truth will never be silent.
Death will come before our silence.

We are absolutely shocked that someone attempted to bomb Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, CNN, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz when our sitting president’s rallying cry is “lock them up” and he refers to half the country as an angry mob and harasses his opponents in unhinged, 1 AM Twitter rants. How could this happen? Didn’t see it coming. Such a surprise.

This is something I sketched on election night. Years from now I’m going to flip through the pages of this sketchbook and stop on this drawing and remember the appalling news of that bigoted pumpkin’s win. As a disabled queer person of color living in this country, I’m terrified. As an artist, I can only hope that the fear and anxiety I’m experiencing will fuel me with the urgency to continue to create art most people see as diverse but I see as normal. I could never imagine Trump or any of his supporters being interested in the work I make. And that makes me very proud.
I hope everyone stays safe for the remainder of this year and the next four. It’s going to be a bumpy road.
