Let’s take this day to celebrate all the transgender community and the people you might know who are trans. Take this day to inform ourself a little more the issues that still exist in our society that we need to adress in order to make this world a better and safer place to all transgender folks out there. They absolutely deserve it Today is a day to celebrate who you are, whether you are out or not, whether you haven’t started your transition or are already fully transitioned, whether what you like or wear isn’t socially or culturally related to your gender, you are extremely valid and should only feel proud of the journey you took so far to become who you truly are.

Safe Schools  is a program that helps address and reduce bullying of queer and trans children. It was reviewed by the government and found to be “outstanding” and “necessary”. Despite this the Aussie government cut it, because you know people are homophobic and transphobic. This is very upsetting. No matter where on the political spectrum you are, how can somebody be okay with bullying towards children?

The painting was pasted in Collingwood. Its based on a photo of the super gorgeous Arisce Wanzer Official.

One out of every seven transgender people live in poverty. The rate of poverty among transgender people is basically of outrageous. The numbers get work, because those transgender people that have jobs are more likely to be underemployed and work low income jobs. Having a low income is exacerbated by the expensive costs of transitioning. You can read more about the staggering rates of poverty among transgender people here.

This is pasted in the Collingwood neighborhood of Melbourne, Australia. The model for this painting is Morgan M Page. Who is doing great work advocating for trans people ans sex workers, and making great art in Montreal, Quebec. She also has basically the best twitter feed.

20% of transgender people will experience homelessness.  This awful statistic is a result of so many transgender people not having anywhere to go. Parents often reject transgender children, and employers are less like to hire trans people. So far too many end up on the streets. If people just treat transgender people as if they are just another person, perhaps more would be able to live full lives.

This is pasted in Collingwood, VIC (a suburb of Melbourne). The portrait is based on the lovely and inspiring Mia Tu Mutch.

Queer The Streets art show at Melbourne Pride festival. As part of the Midsumma festival I am putting on a show of 16 portraits of transgender, and gender diverse, people. I’ve done several posts and street art pieces on the mistreatment of trans people. I wanted to put something out into the world that would be empowering to trans people. So the paintings are all large size paintings, that are designed to celebrate the beauty and strength of transgender lives. The show opens 21 January at Tacit art gallery (312 Johnston St, Abbotsford, VIC).

Portrait of Islan Nettles Last year Islan Nettles was beaten to death outside a police service area in New York. Here murderer was charged with a misdemeanor for assault. Transgender women face extreme rates of discrimination, and for trans women of colour that often comes in the form of violence. The murder rate for trans women of colour is insanely high compared to the rest of the general population, and it is not uncommon that the murderers go free. This is outrageous. Its a sad part of our society, and needs to be dealt with in some way.

Read more about Islan Nettles story, and the legal situation around violence against trans people in this article by Parker Molloy

“We will be our own heroes.” I recently delivered this painting to Ygender. They are a Melbourne based organization that provides a community and safe space for trans* and gender diverse youth. They’re doing great things. For example they recently kicked off the “What makes an ally” project, which provides information and resources to general public on how to support trans* and gender diverse people. www.allyproject.org.

It’s pride month! I wanted to do a drawing on the trans flag to start. I never got round to drawing something with the trans flag when I did the lgbt drawings, so I thought I might draw it now instead.

Nevertheless, this June we need to also focus on supporting the blacklivesmatter movement. We need to support the fight against the injustice and police brutality that POC have to face, just because of the colour of their skin. Before anyone condemns the riots in America, we need to remember that Stonewall was a riot against police brutality. Not only that, but it was led by people of colour. Without riots, the lgbt community would not have the rights they have now. Nor would there be pride.

So, if you are celebrating pride this year, just keep this in mind. You can’t support the whole of the lgbt community without supporting POC.

Oh also I used to pretend to be a boy pre-learning what transgender was so jot that the f*ck down.
