i’m back after six months with a pic dump of my last two weeks!

it’s currently week six of this semester and i’ve yet again accumulated substantial backlog, but this time i’m doing a lot more of political theory i’m literally loving the concepts! i’m struggling a little with linguistics, but the computational module i’m taking isn’t as bad as i expected, and despite exceeding the recommended workload it hasn’t been that overwhelming! (i’ve managed to make time for my hobbies, and even picked up a new hobby: crochet!)

I decided to do a “Five Fav Fridays” series, just listing a few great things about my life, things I’ve enjoyed, or whatever else I’d like, on Fridays.

1. Pure Leaf Iced Sweet Tea

Pure Leaf Iced Sweet Tea is my favorite brand of iced sweet tea. I’m a sucker for sweet tea, given my insane sweet tooth and love for tea, but Pure Leaf has managed to create a tea that isn’t too sweet, but not too bitter either. Plus, it’s only a few bucks at the grocery store! Perfect.

2. Spoken Word Poetry

Spoken Word Poetry has a very special place in my heart. I’ve spent numerous hours on YouTube, Vimeo, and Ted Talks, watching in amazement how these strangers can pull so many emotions out of me with their own. Spoken word is amazing, and if you haven’t checked any of it out, I’ll post some of my favorites below.

Sarah Kay: If I Should Have A Daughter

Anis Mojgani: Shake the Dust

3. Homecoming Football Game

My home town is known for having an intense virus of school spirit. Homecoming is nothing short of crazy, intense, and wild, all in good fun. Tonight is the homecoming football game, and, being a recent graduate, I’m really excited to watch the game and see the Homecoming Court be presented during half time. My little brother is a running back for the team and I’m really looking forward to watching him play and run the ball! Friday nights were meant for football.

4. Cute School Supplies

Cute school supplies are a must! Especially now that I’m in college, I want to be excited to do my school work and be successful. Cute pens and organization helps! (Though my desk drawer isn’t that cute).

I bought this chevron binder for .49 cents and already had this coral monogram sticker, so I combined the two and woolah! I have a cute binder to put my text book! Annoyingly, two of my text books came as a stack of loose papers, so this was a trendy solution.

Cute pens and personalized stationary is also essential. I bought these pens at Target in the $1 section! They come in a pack of two and are super cute, but don’t last very long. But, they’re trendy and only .50 cents! My monogrammed paper I made, easily by printing it out from Microsoft Word onto blank white paper! So easy and cute!

5. New Riding Boots

Unfortunately, my Steve Madden boots I bought last January have come to an end. It’s been a great 9 months, but they’re just too worn to wear now. Luckily for me, that meant it was time to buy new boots! I saw these in Target (online here) and thought, “I have to buy these.” I’m so glad I did! They were only $39.99 (a steal) and are so comfy and cute! My Target was running out of them, so I would recommend getting them soon or ordering them online if you’re looking for a reasonably priced riding boot!

Thanks for reading! I hope you all have a great Friday!

To all the students out there preparing or filling out college applications: don’t freak out.

Take it from me - no matter where you go, you will not be unhappy. College is a pretty big deal, but where you go will not dictate your life and your experiences. Here are some words of advice:

1. Only apply to schools you feel confident about. Applying to schools that don’t have your major or interests is a waste of time, energy, and money. Apply to schools you would be proud to attend and can see yourself at. This was a struggle for me - I wasn’t accepted into my dream school, but my backup school was still one I would be comfortable with attending (I know I didn’t come off that way on this blog).

2. Don’t lie on applications. You want a university to want you for YOU, not for this made up person on paper (or, in most cases, online). Of course, bring out your best qualities and characteristics, but don’t go telling a school you are the president of a club or founded a group, if it isn’t true. Be you!

3. Don’t get stressed if you don’t get into your first choice. That was me. I was crushed and felt sad, which is normal and OK. That was something people often forget to mention: it’s okay to be sad about college. There are so many other universities out there (approx. 2,169!) and you will find one that you will fall in love with.

4. Make the best of the school you’re at. I thought I would hate my school, but after being here for two weeks, I’m realizing that I do like it. I like the city (town), the school, and the people. Give it some time. And if you’re going to your first choice, don’t go in with extremely high expectations. Be realistic, but still have fun!

Good luck to everyone sending out applications this fall and winter. You’ll all do great!

What’s in my School Bag?

Since this is a college based blog, I thought this would be the perfect place to post what I have in my school bag! I decided I would carry a bag this year instead of a backpack. A bag is very sophisticated and mature to me, but I still brought my backpack to school with me, if I ever decided to switch.

The bag I’m currently using a Lilly Pulitzer Shine Tote. I find it bright the flamingos to be adorable. Unfortunately, I bought it during the sale towards the end of summer, so they aren’t sold anymore, however there is a somewhat similar one here. The bag is big, waterproof, and has a zipper pocket on the inside! It’s the perfect bag to use for school, besides the fact it can’t zip up. I’m planning on purchasing a Longchamp Le Pliage and swapping those two between each other.

What I carry in my bag is pretty much the same each day. I carry, of course, the basics: my Liz Claiborne wallet (similar here), a pair of sunnies I was given from a friend, a stick of Dove deodorant, Calgon hand cream (best hand cream I’ve ever used), two sticks of chapstick, a Bath and Body Works hand sanitizer in cucumber melon, and my Ralph Lauren 1 body mist. I carry my body products in a polka dot cosmetic bag that I bought from Forever21, along with the striped one, in a pack of three (which is unfortunately not sold online).

I also have a pack of Mentos gum, my dorm keys on a cute pink lanyard, and a coupon book I was given on campus!

As far as school supplies go, I carry eight pens, four highlighters, and a pad of post it notes. I carry all of those in the striped cosmetic bag, which is the perfect size - there’s no struggle looking for the right pen!

My classes are all pretty spaced out. I have enough time that I can come back to my dorm room between classes, so I switch out which notebook I need so I’m not carrying two around at the same time. I have three, which I bought at Target.

I may or may not end up changing what I carry with me. I have everything I need without carrying too many items, so I’m happy. Let me know what you carry in yours!

Every time I do yoga, I am so surprised that I don’t go out and do it more often. I attended a free yoga class tonight on campus at our rec center, and realized how much I love it. The environment was so nice and comforting, and extremely positive. The instructor made a very important point to make sure we all understand that loving ourselves and finding inner peace is important, and we can’t beat ourselves up over mistakes and regrets.

Inner peace and self love are so important and I feel we so often forget to love ourselves. It was a nice reminder that we all need to take a moment to appreciate and tell ourselves all the positive things about us. Thanks, yoga instructor. Tonight was peaceful.

There are many things that I love about life, shoes being one of them.

Last night, my roommate and I went with one of our friends here to Ross. He has a car since he’s out of state, so we made a nice trip! Like any Ross trip, it was chaotic and messy BUT I found these beautiful bad boys (girls?).

I’ve been looking for a pair of brown oxfords for awhile. I found a pair I really loved at Aldo, but I didn’t love the price. I found these Madden Girl ones for $16.99 in my size and had to grab them!

They fit perfectly but unfortunately, the rain forbid me to wear them to class today. My fingers are crossed that tomorrow will be a nice enough day to whip these out and dance around campus in.

Something that I feel very bittersweet about is my eating schedule.

Eating in college is a weird thing. I live in a dorm, so I have a meal plan offered by my university. I selected the 100 Meals meal plan, meaning on average I will likely eat 1-2 meals a day, 5 days a week (in the dining hall). What’s frustrating though, is that when the dining hall is closed between meals, that’s when I find myself starving. In our dorm we have a LOT of breakfast food, like bagels, peanut butter, oatmeal, cereal, and milk, but I’m not always in the mood for cereal.

Right now I’m starving. I’m going to eat a bagel with peanut butter on it (Adam’s peanut butter, the good kind) and browse Tumblr before my roommate and I go off to do some yoga.

Dining hall food really isn’t that bad. Some of the food they offer isn’t always the best, but there are so many options, especially for someone like me who doesn’t eat meat. There are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options always available, which is nice, and even healthy options, instead of just burgers and fries. I made a salad yesterday that had tofu cubes on it (I love tofu) and it was delicious. People who constantly say bad things about dining halls must not have had very good luck.

We even have fruit infused water: lemon-lime, lemon, grapefruit, cucumber, and orange. Orange water is nice. Now to get that bagel.

I’m pretty happy right now with how my dorm is turning out. It’s of course, not finished, but I’m really happy with how it is right now!

I’ve never been an A+ student. The highest GPA I’ve ever gotten in a year is 3.7, both semesters. I’ve never been someone to sit down and study really hard for hours on end, but now that I’m in college, those habits need to change.

My goal this quarter is to get a 3.8 GPA. Like I said, I have literally never had grades that good before, but I’m hoping that my incredible interest in my classes and change of habits will get me there. I know a 3.8 is really, really hard to get, especially in college, but I’d rather aim high than low.

So, here I am, avoiding homework by cleaning my dorm and blogging about college. Here’s to another 9 weeks!

Fin.

There are some things about college life that I like. I like how crisp the air is in the morning on my way to my 8 am class - it’s very classic fall here - and how wearing big sweaters is an actual thing here. My first class is at the wonderful time of 8 am. I woke up at 6:30 to ensure I had enough time to get there, but walking it takes maybe 6 minutes for me. My professors, for both of the classes I had today, were really cool and funny. Luckily for me, I finish classes by 11:20 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

I had a great rest of my day. One of my friends from high school that goes here with me and I hung out a lot, and we had lunch with a group of our friends. I got financial aid figured out, and had a lot of time to relax and enjoy myself.

My roommate and I made our first real friend (I think). He’s a boy who lives on the floor below us who’s from ~SoCal~. It’s nice to have made a friend, and to hang out with someone other than people we already know.

First day of classes went well.

Fin.

Today was a great day, actually. I tried waking up at 8 am to try preparing for my 8 am class every morning that starts on Wednesday, but I couldn’t. I finally got out of bed at 9.

My roommate and I met up with some close friends and went to the info fair together. It was pretty cool but I missed the one booth I was most interested in. Thankfully it’s going on tomorrow also so I’ll be able to get info on the group tomorrow! I signed up to join the Photo Club, about photography, since I brought my Nikon d40.

My roommate and I napped today and made a night trip into downtown, walking, with another friend of ours. All the dining halls close at 7 pm and don’t reopen until 10, so we needed to go downtown for dinner. Pita Pit made the walk worth it.

I’m excited for our dorm. We’ve been talking about ways to make it better, cuter, and much more practical. I can’t wait until it’s “finished,” whenever that may be.

Fin.

I’m definitely not finished decorating but this is my dorm room! Well, my bed!

I’m definitely not finished decorating but this is my dorm room! Well, my bed!

Post link

I just spent my first night in my dorm! It was nice, but somewhat lonely without my roommate. Thankfully my roommate moved in today, who is also a good friend of mine. I helped her unpack and we “captained” our beds together.

We walked downtown from our dorm, which is about a 15 minute walk, and got some lunch. We went to this really cute bakery and each got these super delicious sandwiches. After we went to this food co-op, which only sells healthy, organic, and local products. We bought some groceries there since we couldn’t find a normal grocery store. The milk we bought is in a glass bottle, so when we’re finished, we return it and get it recycled! What we didn’t know though, is that we had to bag our own groceries and pay for the bags. We put all our groceries in my tote bag and carried it all the way back to our dorm that way.

Walking back was a lot of uphill, and so far we’ve only used stairs. I’m hoping that my roommate and I will have nice booties by the end of the quarter, and the year.

My first night was a good one. I ate oatmeal for breakfast, got dressed, and cleaned up my room a bit. Now it’s a little messy, but I’ll clean it up again by tonight.

I can hear my RA coming down the hall introducing herself to everyone on the floor. My roommate and I are both in our beds (I’m not wearing pants) so we’ll both have to get up in a moment to meet her.

Fin.

I’m currently laying in my bed in my new dorm room! Moving in today was fine. I didn’t feel stressed, bored, or frustrated. My mom, my sister, my best friend, and my boyfriend all came up with me and helped me move in. We also got pizza and ice cream for lunch, but even with that break, moving in did not take long at all.

My mom “organized” my closet, but I’m very particular on my clothing so I’m going to reorganize it in a bit. It’s currently 10:16 pm, and since I’m not very tired, I’m going to finish putting other things away and decorating. The room is nice and a comfortable size. I like it.

Hopefully I won’t feel weird in the morning or anything. The only thing I have planned for tomorrow is talking to a financial aid adviser. Maybe I’ll try to find some other things to do. We’ll see!

Fin.

Tomorrow is move in day. I’m moving in a day early because my parents won’t be able to move me in on Sunday. It will be nice, however, to move in a day before my roommate, so I don’t need to worry about us both moving in at once and having our room be a total disaster.

I didn’t start packing until 11 pm Friday. I had all day Friday but I just did everything else. My best friend came over and helped me pack, and we got it all done in an hour or so, which is nice. I’m excited to move in! I’m excited to hang up all my clothes and put my bed together. My best friend and my boyfriend are also coming up to move me in tomorrow, so hopefully I won’t get too stressed.

I hope I remember to take pictures and document my progress on my room tomorrow. I’m excited for the finished product and to see how it will look. Here’s to freshmen year!
