Circle skirts 101
Introduction:
I’ve spoken about how to make an easy rectangle skirt in the past, but would like to introduce you all to a different type of skirt today: the circle skirt.

How to make a circle skirt:
Making a circle skirt is a step up from the rectangle skirt, but still makes for a beginner-friendly project. The basic pattern’s easy: it’s just a circle with a hole at the centre for your waist.
To see tutorials on how to make this skirt, check out The Closet Historian,WikiHow,Made Everyday,The Shapes of Fabric, and The Creative Curator.
Some math is involved in drafting your pattern, but don’t worry: circle skirt calculators will help if you’re bad with numbers, like the ones by Calculators,The Creative Curator,Treasurie, and Mood Fabrics.

Variations:
There’s plenty of different options when it comes to waistbands: zippers, exposed elastic, cased elastic, half elastic, ties, buttons, shirring,… And don’t forget to add pockets, too! If you can’t cut your circle out in one piece, you can easily hide them in your side seams.
Need a lining? Just add a second circle beneath your outer one.

You don’t have to stick to a full circle if you don’t want to: a circle is the standard pattern, but this skirt allows for a lot of variation when it comes to fullness, length, and styles. For example, if you have a limited amount of fabric you could make a ¼ circle skirt. If you want a skirt with maximum twirliness, go for a double circle skirt!
(Image source) [ID: five circle skirt patterns and a photo of the corresponding skirt: ¼ circle skirt, half circle skirt, ¾ circle skirt, full circle skirt, and double circle skirt.]
You can do a lot of fun variations to get different skirt types, like pleats, panels, godets, a high-low hem,… Just to give you a few ideas.

Youdon’t even have to stick to a circle: the same principle can be used to make a handkerchief skirt.

And if you don’t like skirts, you can also make circular shorts,French knickers,or add a bodiceto make a dress.

Conclusion:
Thecircle skirt is a good addition to your arsenal of patternsif you enjoy wearing skirts. It’s easyto make, allows for a lot of variation, and can be made in any size.
this site definitely doesn’t allow you to paste the link to any article blocked by a paywall (say, a NYT article) so that you can read it free of charge! that would be illegal and would benefit broke college students too much. it definitely does not do that. promise.
nobuddy feels like they have a sharp attention span these days, right? and we all just click “agree on terms of service” because its hard to love yourself sometimes, well
enterTerms of Service, Didn’t Read:a website and a browser addon that streamlines the terms of service of many popular web services to be read by the tech sunday drivers.
It’s graded from A (great) to E (awful) and if you have the addon you have access to the info about the website on your bar
does anyone else have that issue of not knowing when you’re pushing yourself too hard or when you’re just pushing yourself a little outside of your usual limits? i only ask because one will inevitably lead to burn out and the other i feel is much more of a conditioning thing? i cannot make this sound any better phrased
I know from years of accidentally abusing myself that I set goals too high. I gauge by cutting my goal in half. I want to study languages every day of the week? Cut it down to 3. I want to practice 30 mins a day? Cut it down to 15. I want to write 1000 words? Cut it down to 500. Set lower, attainable goals. If they’re TOO easy, I raise them a tiny bit. 4 days. 20 minutes. 600 words. And I try not to raise them too drastically or frequently each time. I also try to take breaks whenever my day is having an unusually high “this isn’t fun” response. Reluctance is okay, but feeling depressed/anxious/stressed/angry isn’t.
Well folks I’ve been sitting on this little script for ages and finally decided to just go ahead and publish it. What does it do?
- you can enter any ao3 link - for example, to your bookmarks or an author’s works page - and automatically download all the works and series that are linked from that page in the format of your choice. if there are multiple pages, the script will page through results for you until there are no more fics to download
- you can check your fanfic-savin’ folder for unfinished fics and automatically update them if there are new chapters. you can also check for new fics in series!
- if you’re a dinosaur who uses Pinboard, you can back up all the Pinboard bookmarks you have that link to ao3
- don’t worry about crashing ao3 with this! this baby takes forever to run, guaranteed. anyway ao3 won’t let me make more than one request per second even if I wanted to so it’s quite safe
I’ve been working on this for about two years and it’s finally in a state where it does everything I want and isn’t breaking every two seconds, so I thought it was time to share! I hope y'all get some use out of it.
note: this is a standalone desktop app that DOES NOT DO ANYTHING aside from automate clicking on buttons on the ao3 website. Everything this script does, can be done by hand using ao3’s regular features. It is just a utility to facilitate personal backups for offline reading - there’s no website or server, I have no access to or indeed interest in the fics other people download using this. No plagiarism is happening here, please don’t come after me.
edit: some kind individuals have kicked me a few bucks on ko-fi as thanks for this, for which I am deeply honored and thankful. I’ve been pondering for a while what I wanted to do with the money, as I felt that given the source, I should put it towards something fandom-related. now with tumblr blaze I feel that I have the perfect answer - use the money to promote the script to more people who might like it! I’m about to put in the blaze application now. As ever, I hope that my efforts can be of some use to you, the fandom community. And if not, I hope I haven’t taken up too much of your time!

Useful and available, two important qualities!
So, Microsoft is terrible. Yes yes, the oldest claim in the world.
But specifically… I just hate how Windows 10 tries to conflate and confuse web searches with things on one’s own computer. The start menu should never do anything related to web-searching, especially if it purports to try to give examples of things that are on my hard drive!
This will make old, computer-illiterate people more malware-vulnerable. You have to maintain a strong distinction between “things that are on this computer (and maybe even included in Windows)” (safe, one hopes, or you already got pwned by it, probably), and “things on the web” (scary, dangerous, not to be trusted at all).
Eroding that barrier in the UI is awful. It just FEELS like a violation every time I start typing into the start bar, and it tries to show me ANYTHING web-related. My computer is NOT just an internet-portal! It has tons of stuff on it, and when I’m interacting with the OS, I ONLY want to see things that are already on here!
If I wanted to see something online, I would go to my browser! All the online stuff should be segregated into the browser!
Specific programs can access the internet; that’s fine. But my OS’s functions and interface should JUST be about the things that are already on my computer.
#someone in the notes mentioned shut up windows 10.
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
i haven’t used this myself but i’ll be looking into it
Literally spent multiple hours lobotomizing my Windows reinstall when I upgraded recently, the amount of awful shit they had in nowadays makes me long for the age of win98, when software was merely bad, rather than actively harmful.
the exact setting in shutup10 for this issue is “Disable extension of Windows 10 search with Bing” it’s at the very bottom under misc.
There are 2 programs that will turn Windows 10 from an advertising riddled, bloated mess into a useful tool.
10AppsManager
With one click, this will remove ALL THE BLOATWARE Windows comes with. Seriously, you need NONE OF THESE apps, and if you do, you can just uninstall all the ones you don’t need individually.
Winaero Tweaker
This program will give you almost complete control over Windows 10’s behavior. Disabling the web search in the start menu, op rightfully complained about, is just one of the many things this thing can do
For example, with a single setting you can turn off any ads from microsoft, system-wide
It is a powerful tool, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily every single setting comes with an explanation about what it actually does, and most settings can be easily reversed.
