Left Eye 20th Anniversary

20 yrs ago, we lost one of the greats…the talented & beautiful #LisaLopes AKA #LeftEye from legendary group #TLC. I wanted to honour her by creating a design I feel she would’ve liked.

Feeling art blocked due to stress from the upcoming Fanime Artist Alley, so I painted this scenery based on a photo I took in Japan. Nothing is more calming than the sound of water and leaves <3

Moomin: Snufkin (Swedish: Snusmumriken, Finnish: Nuuskamuikkunen)

He is Moomintroll’s best friend, who goes south every winter and returns in the spring. He is the son of the Mymble and the Joxter, and is half-brother to the Mymble’s daughter and Little My. Snufkin is an adventurer and a vagabond, admired by those who are small and shy.

Snufkin wears old green clothes and a wide brimmed hat he’s had since birth. He lives in a tent, smokes a pipe, and plays the harmonica. Snufkin also has a great dislike for authority figures such as the Park Keeper, and the many regulation signs and fences he puts up, and as such is often thought of as an anarchist. At one point he sabotages The Park Keeper by planting Hattifatteners in his garden, causing them to grow and drive him out.

Snufkin prefers freely-growing foliage to fenced-in lawns. He keeps as few worldly possessions as possible, seeing them as a burden, and being happier keeping the memory of a thing than the thing itself. This aspect of his personality is contrasted in the character of Sniff.

Las Pozas, Mexico

Las Pozas dates back to 1947 when Edward James was living in Mexico, in semi-exile. Deep within the rainforests of Mexico, seven hours outside of Mexico City, lies a magical hidden gem that very few have had the pleasure of stumbling across. It’s called Las Pozas and it is a sculpture garden, tucked away from prying eyes and at one with nature. It was created by a man named Edward James, an eccentric man who spent millions to create this magical wonderland that’s comprised of 20 acres of natural waterfalls and mountain springs.

Driving back home from PA yesterday, I made a point to stop again in Kent Falls State Park in CT, this time a bit earlier so that I could hike to the top.  (Also helped that the sun sets later this time of year, so I was able to do that and still make it home - another 3 hours - in daylight.)

But first (in order here, but later in the trip): Lake McDonough, on Rt. 318 in CT, below the Saville dam (which holds back the Barkhamsted Reservoir).  Nicely scenic.  Apparently you can boat on it.  And the reservoir above is much huger than it looks from this vantage point on the dam.

Anyway, I’m going to try to upload some movies, in case that doesn’t work:

View from the parking lot; middle cataract of the falls.

The first cataract!

And the stream before it plunges (at far left, the plunge; at far right, the little bridge that marks the beginning of the trail from top to bottom; the trail is a half-mile round trip, and the elevation gain is 250 ft. / 76 m.)

Let’s see if some movies work!

Ooh, maybe!  So, these are the five “stages” of the falls, from lowest to the top:

I just REALLY love waterfalls, you guys.  If I’d had time I would have sat there on the various viewing platforms for hours, just watching and listening to them.

I hadn’t visited these falls for close to 10 years, but went back today to run a roll through my medium format camera. I’ll be honest and say it’s disappointing to see how much of an impact all the foot traffic has had on this area. It used to be completely covered in moss and thriving ferns of various species. Now it’s a dark, bare shell of its former glory. Maybe it’s time the Wellington Park Management Trust step in and formalise a trail and viewing platform like the nearby Myrtle Gully falls? “Not So Secret” falls - kunanyi / Mt. We started our journey yesterday and already it has kicked ass. We stayed at Cosby Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Very quiet, shady and beautiful campground. Our campsite was next to a creek, which made a great backdrop. We stopped at a veggie stand on the way in to buy some local produce. We broke out the cast iron skillet and made some badass veggie tacos. On the way out of the campground we stopped at Ozone Falls. Great photo op and swim spot. The falls drop 110’ into a cool little swimming hole. Summertime vibes.
