Atem will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the mystery surrounding him that drew my interest to Yu-Gi-Oh. My being a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh led me to discover online fandoms and fanfiction. Fanfiction led me to discover my passion as a writer. I’ve finished my first book, and am in the process of editing it now. In a way, this series helped me to find what gives me the most joy in my life.
Since Seto and Mokuba’s parents never appeared in the series, I’ve taken it upon myaelf to create them. Their mother gave Kaiba his blue eyes and Mokuba his black hair. She was Gozaburou’s fiancée in high school where she met the boys’ father, who have Kaiba his brown hair and Mokuba his steel eyes. Their relatives disliked the fact a high class girl who was already engaged wanted a commoner boy. Due to this disliking, when the brothers’ parents died, the relatives got pay back on the brothers by stealing their inheritance. Gozaburou also got in on the revenge by adopting his ex-fiancée’s children and abusing them. If Seto and Mokuba’s story wasn’t already sad, I think I’ve made it even more sad.
I really like the voice acting during the duel in Episode 163. The way Dan Green voices Yugi in the episode is so frightening, yet so amazingly delivered.
Okay, just imagine… What if Yugi is the one who has the worst punishment ideas when facing an atagonist like “I want to set this man on fire because he touched my chick!” or “I’m going to kill that gang with my yoyo” and then Atem read his mind and is like “Man, that’s WILD” and then comes out and does it because he thinks that’s what Yugi wants (probably because he’s scared of him and his mind).
And what if Atem is genuinely concerned about Yugi’s mental health? He keeps checking on him and asking him “You OK, bro?” basically everyday. He also chooses to face the villains himself not because he wants to protect Yugi but because he has mercy and wants to protect the villains from Yugi’s wrath? And when Yugi entered Atem’s soul (during Battle City), Atem probably freaked out a lot because HOW THE HELL did he get there?
What if Yami Marik knew about that and that’s why he decided to use Yugi as a sacrifice during the shadow game with Atem? Because he knew that his madness was no match to Yugi’s evilness.
Okay so my co-writer kind of planted an idea for my girl Lotus so decided to run with it and now it’s kind of become a fun little AU for her to wander around in till Our Game Now debuts.
So with this variation of Lotus this is how I would write her if she were to be part of Original Yu-Gi-Oh/Duel Monsters story.
In the main storyline, Lotus is a spirit. She died during the ancient times, and during that time, was very close with Atem. She was a dancer in his court and while she wasn’t of high class, she was someone Atem treasured for loving him for him. When Atem met his end with Zorc, Lotus was heart broken and wanted to some how help Atem when the time came for him to fulfill his destiny. With help from the court who learned for their relationship, she was given to the chance to be able to see him again as a spirit who could as a guide. Mainly in helping him stay on course and be someone for him to lean one whenever he felt overwhelmed. However, the one catch would be she couldn’t tell him every step of the plan. She could help with course corrections and give some hints but the rest Atem would need to figure out on his own. Not a fun arrangement but it was one she was willing to go with since it would mean being with him again and helping him, even though he wouldn’t know who she is.
Fast forward to when Atem awakens and gains access to the soul room of the puzzle. He finds Lotus in one of the rooms, tending to flowers and decorations. He’s caught off guard by this since as far as he was concerned, only he, Yugi and the monsters inhabited the place so it was quite the shock to see this young woman wandering around. She introduces herself as the gardener of the place and is here to help in whatever way she can. Atem is unsure at first but accepts the offer… and has to admit, it is nice to have company when Yugi isn’t around. Plus… he just can’t ignore the nagging feeling that something about her is… familiar.
And that’s the basic summary. Not planning on doing any full fanfic for this since with Lotus overall, doesn’t alter the story that much. Things pretty much play out the same, with just stuff in-between with Atem going to Lotus for support and words of guidance. I’m planning to just do small vignettes so it’ll be more like a collection of stories rather than an over arching story. (That’s what the series is for.) So, I’ll shall explore more of this in the future cause gah love this idea too much.
Now that the Yu-Gi-Oh holiday charity zine is done and shipped I can post the full piece! I really wanted to bring in an ancient Egyptian holiday in tandem with modern winter celebrations, so I used the Nehebkau Festival (usually took palace within modern December). The holiday honoring the god, Nehebkau, was celebrated by feasting on cakes made from khersait plants (Egyptologists are still debating on the actual plant).
I had a lot of fun with this and it was delightful to work with so many other talented creators!!
Yu-Gi-Oh! PASTEL EDITION! I’ve been working on this for a while I’m very happy with how it turned out! I know Yugis an edgy boy but like- he looks so cute in pastels~
And that further explains why Rishid “totally random baby we swear” Ishtar shared a bunch of their physical features like unique eye colour…. maybe the cousins donated a baby just to make sure the information they needed would still be available for them to steal once they figured out how to pull it off.
Which implies that they had eyes on their Weird Underground Cousins, or maybe even a spy. Maybe Papa Ishtar knew the rumours of such and that’s another reason so be so overly paranoid about his children going to the surface. After all, can you imagine the problems if the heir himself was recruited by thier Weird Aboveground Cousins?
That’s why the Ishtars carved the secret in their sons’ backs. They could hold off their rival Tombkeepers by going “well we have knowledge about opening the door that you don’t, and you can’t touch us without causing it to be lost forever”
Wait oh my god, the Tombkeepers had a feud…..Shadi’s side had four of the Items, but they weren’t any closer to getting the other three after 3000 years because the Puzzle was protected, and they couldn’t get at the Necklace and Rod without starting an all-out war with their Weird Underground Cousins, which could risk destroying the bearer of the god card secret or damaging the Tablet…..that whole weirdass “this is the will of the pharoah” thing was specifically a ploy to lure Malik aboveground and get those two Items into play
Is it only me or does Rishid also look strikingly similar to Shada/Shadi?
I mean, it could of course be that they look just similar because they’re both bald and maybe Takahashi was only able to draw the generic face™.
But honestly? Last weekend, @kittykaibasblog flipped through some of my mangas and while passing by and just glancing at the page I actually mistook younger Rishid without the scars for Shadi and I went back to take another closer look. And we were both immediately reminded of the theory above.
I have no idea what’s up now with Shadi, whether he’s an ancient spirit guarding the tomb or whether he was a human until Bakura killed him in DSOD or how old he is/was, but all I can think now is “oh gods, plz don’t let Shadi be Rishid’s dad.”
