Todays post is about Cloves, some of their health benefits and uses!

Health benefits when added to the diet:

  • They contain a very potent amount of Phenols, a strong branch of antioxidant that helps protect the cells of the body from damage particularly from free radicals which are known to cause cancers and speed up aging. It also works as a natural preservative in meals due to actions such as slowing down the oxidation of fats in the food.
  • Adding them to your diet can help keep coughs and colds at bay due to antibacterial properties and the Eugenol oil that they possess, similar to Menthol in it’s aroma and aromatic flavour it is strong in fighting throat & chest infections. This combines to give it strong expectorant properties which makes it easier to cough up phlegm.
  • They are a great source of Vitamins C, K, B-6, B-1 and B-2. They also include Potassium and Sodium, valuable electrolytes. All of these are needed by the body for optimum function and can be added to the diet by seasoning with ground Clove powder or adding whole cloves to a meal such as a soup and taken out before serving.

Remedial uses:

1. Clove tea for fighting infection (especially in the chest & sinuses), aging and poor digestion -

  • First add a tablespoon of whole Cloves to a Pestle & Mortar and bash them down into small pieces but do not grind them as they need to be strained afterwards.
  • Next add the Cloves to a cup of boiled water in a mini cup strainer or tea infuser and allow them to steep for 10 - 20 minutes. The longer they are left the greater the potency but the flavour will become more bitter/pungent.
  • Strain the Cloves out and now you can flavour the tea with lemon/lime juice or honey/stevia depending on your preference.
  • You can also add a black tea bag for the last 3 minutes of steeping to get a form of spiced tea that may be more to your taste.

This tea should not be taken too often as the warnings below will explain, but taken twice a week can have a tonic effect on overall health due to the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

2. If you are suffering from a toothache or a sore throat you can suck/chew on a Clove to release it’s anti-inflammatory and local anesthetic properties. This will not only reduce the pain greatly but help to fight the cause if it is infection based.

3.Quick facial mask for fighting acne causing bacteria and reducing oil buildup -

  • Use a Pestle & Mortar to bash & grind a tablespoon of whole cloves down into a fine powder.
  • Add a teaspoon of water or honey and muddle the mixture together.
  • Add a few drops of Lime juice.

Apply to the worst effected areas and let it sit for 20 minutes, rinsing off with cool water. Doing a facial steam with a bowl before hand will increase the effectiveness!

This not only kills excess bacteria but helps to reduce inflammation. This mask should not be used too regularly otherwise it can cause irritation due to the potency of the Eugenol oil.

Cautions -

If you have any allergies to Cloves or similar aromatic Spices then don’t use them in anyway.

If you have a bleeding disorder or are on blood thinning medication don’t drink the tea or add them to your diet in any great number as they have blood thinning properties.

If you have a kidney or liver disorder you should not consume Cloves without checking with your Herbalist or Doctor.

Anyone with blood sugar problems such as Diabetics or Hypoglycemics should be very wary of using Cloves as they lower blood sugar levels.

If pregnant it is always best to avoid trying new things in your diet without checking with a professional first.

Always take a sensible approach to the amount of a Spice you add to your diet as anything taken in excess can be harmful.

Lastly, always check with a trained Botanist, Herbalist or Doctor if you are unsure about anything.

Hope you are all well and have a good day!

1. Green tea, drinking this tea at least one cup a day can help reduce signs of aging and reduce loose skin. This is due to the antioxidants present in the tea called Polyphenols that protect the skin from cell damaging free radicals and various other toxins including sun damage.

2. Lavender oil is great for topical application to tone and tighten skin, it is also great for dermatitis and other skin complaints due to it’s wound healing properties.

3. A mask of 1 part Avocado to 1 part Cucumber will tighten and tone skin along with cleansing and reducing the size of large pores prone to blackheads. Simply blend the ingredients together and apply for 40-50 minutes and rinse off with fresh water or green tea.

A bright side of the very strange year that was 2020 - it gave me lots of time to focus on things I normally don’t make time for.

One of those things was focusing on my skin. I haven’t gone out in public without makeup on since my teen years! Between the daily makeup wear, stress, the sun, aging, hormones, and pollutants in the air my pores were in desperate need of some TLC. The kind people from Derma E sent me an amazing care package of products to help out with that. The products they sent include hyaluronic acid, when I’m learning is the secret to having well hydrated skin! Their Ultra Hydrating Alkaline Water Eye Gel came in especially handy when I’d need to freshen up after a good cry.

I’m pleased to report that, by the end of 2020 I achieved what was previously unthinkable to me, something I didn’t think I would ever feel confident doing: sharing photos of my bare makeup free face! So enjoy these ones of me in the shower, washing away the year that was 2020. (And maybe treat yourself to some Derma Eproducts!)@dermae-blog

Rose oil is an amazing facial oil that is in loads of anti-aging products and is proven to improve appearance of acne affected skin, along with dry skin and even scaring. While most of these beauty products are loaded with chemicals and preservatives they are also typically outrageously priced, considering how easy they are to make at home, organically. Among the benefits homemade oils have on your wallet and your physical well being, I personally have found the process of growing, harvesting and working with my herbs deepens my bond with nature and cultivates a true spiritual connection to our bountiful Earth. I believe my state of mind influences what my hands touch so I make a effort to keep my mindset positive and my intentions conscious and pure as well. With this connection I trust that anything I create using my herbs will be potent and pure.

I will be sharing what I believe to be the simplest way of making an herbal oil which is  a Cold Infusion Method.

All you will need is:

- Rose Petals (ONLY USE ALL ORGANICALLY GROWN HERBS)

- Carrier oil (Jojoba oil is my favorite)

- 2 Mason Jars (with lids)

- Cheese Cloth (or an old t-shirt)

Anything you are using externally will be absorbed internally through your pours, so i can not stress enough how important ORGANIC is to your health, the plant’s health and the overall health of your environment and our Earth.

The carrier oil I found to work best for me is Jojoba oil, as it it absorbed quickly and leaves little to no oily residue on my skin. (My other favorite substitute is almond oil or coconut oil but both tend to bee too greasy for my skin type

Depending on how much Rose Oil you want to make you will need about 1 cup of carrier oil for every ½ cup of rose petals.

When adding the petals to your first jar it is important to break the petals to expose surface area and create easier access for the oil to extract the medicinal components of your herb. (You can also grind them in a mortar and pestle if you like, but I prefer a more hands on approach)

Once your desired amount of rose petals are in your jar you will add double the amount of your carrier oil and stir the concoction with a long stick before sealing the lid tight, and shacking the liquid for a short period of time.

Now its time to find a nice dark area for your elixir to live for at least 4 weeks to allows adequate fusion and extraction of the herbal components. Once enough time has passed you will strain your oil through a cheese cloth (or old t-shirt) into your second mason jar to obtain the purest and cleanest homemade Rose Oil! Because your oil is homemade and lacking all those gross chemicals and preservatives, your oil will have a shorter shelf life so it is wise to add a (cute) label on the outside of your mason jar describing all ingredients and date of creation. (The shelf life can be prolonged when stored in the fridge)

After the oil is strained I like to add Vitamin E because it too is amazing for your skin and is a natural preservative, so it will also extend the shelf life of your Rose Oil! If you don’t have sensitive skin you can also add any essential oils you like!

It is said that every person in the world will have to deal with fine lines and wrinkles and that these aging signs may first start appearing in the late 20s and early 30s. Accepting the fact that you are getting older and that your skin does not look as smooth as glowing as it did just a few years ago may be a difficult thing to do.

Keep skin looking young with these products

Skincare is all fun and games until you notice your first wrinkle, or five. These signs of aging often show up earlier than you may think, and as unfair as it may seem…some are even genetically predisposed to see crow’s feet at a young age. In fact, skin-fluencer and TikTok star Hyram Yarbro’s skincare routine began as a result of forehead lines he noticed in his early 20’s.
