Wh- what’s wrong with Yelena canonically being asexual? There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact, I really like that part of her character. Why ruin it?
The nastiness I see from fans on instagram and tiktok specifically is just… when tumblr is the least toxic space you know shit is out of hand.
From what I’ve pieced together some media outlet posted an opinion piece on how Bucky and Yelena should be the next big Marvel couple (since BuckyNat is obviously off the table and Yelena and Nat are basically the same person…). Naturally, a lot of comic fans pointed out that Yelena is canonically asexual (and heavily implied to be aromantic), so if Marvel Studios were to take a path like that they should respect that. And the absolute shitstorm that followed was repulsive.
You have a bunch of (mostly) men who just want to sexualize Yelena in general and another horde of people backing this ship up and Yelena being aroace is the opposite of what they want. Not only is it terribly disrespectful to aroace people, the whole thing makes Yelena out to be an object which proves that the entire message of the BW movie went in one ear and out the other.
So allos all say “I can’t describe what romance feels like! You just know it when you feel it!”
