Contemporary Photography Asian Perspectives features over 50 works from six decades by Asian-born photographers, including Fan Ho, Daidō Moriyama, Toshio Shibata, and Miyako Ishiuchi, as well as anonymous photographers employed by the Xinhua News Agency on behalf of the People’s Republic of China. The exhibition reflects Laurence Miller’s 40 years of experience in the Asian fine art photography market – as a gallerist, curator, and collector. During that time, the gallery has hosted New York debut exhibitions for many of Asian photography’s modern masters.

Exhibition presented as part of Asia Week New York.

Natalie Fong is a New York City based photographer born in Taiwan and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She started taking pictures regularly at the beginning of high school, experimenting with film cameras, but it wasn’t until she started college that she began to understand photography as an art form.

“I spent a lot of my freshman year creating conceptual self portraits to map out my thoughts and emotions. The self portraits came and went fairly quickly as I became more drawn towards fashion, but the motivation behind creating images remains the same. My work is most often an extension of my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about life. I photograph to remember things. I frequently photograph people in postures of hopefulness because of my desire to live life in the same way based on my foundation in Christianity.”

Natalie is currently studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for photography.

Steffi Lynn is a Taiwanese illustrator from Austin, Texas currently residing in Brooklyn, New York. In the fall she will enter her senior year at Pratt Institute, where she is working on her B.F.A. in Communications Design. Steffi explored many creative fields– she had her start in photography, played with stop motion films, and had a brief interest in fashion design, before she arrived in Brooklyn and began taking illustration seriously during her sophomore year, after many years of just doodling and hand lettering in her middle and high school notes to friends in class. Her work is colorful and imaginative, transporting us to her peculiar yet charming world.

Kim Dae Hyun, who goes by the pseudonym Moonassi, is a Korean, Seoul-based artist whose enigmatic body of work shows surrealistic  scenes, characterized by the presence of buddha-like figures, rich with subtextual commentary. When asked what his moniker “Moonassi” meant in an interview with Artchipel, he answered that it’s a synthesis of “Moona”, his artist name meaning “there is no such thing as me” or “emptiness/void in me”, and the honorific suffix “씨 (-ssi)”. When put together they can be roughly translated as “someone who has no identity”.

Aileen Chong is a Chinese-Peruvian artist living in Brooklyn, New York. Her most current work is meant to suggest “a dialogue about cultural fusion rooted in personal experiences” . Because of her formative years spent in Long Island but Peruvian upbringing and Chinese ancestry and feeling as if she cannot fully identify one culture or the other, she experiences a sense of dysphoria. It is through her work that she attempts to bridge the points in her multifaceted identity, visually representing the melding of her cultural identities through abstraction.
