LaHi presents: Seriously Trivial

Some sculptures from the Greek and Roman times were coloured with bright hues. These pigments, however, faded away with exposure to light and time. Some painted statues had their colours scrubbed off by restorers. A leading archaeologist and art historian in the 18th century, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, even claimed that the white, bare sculptures were purer. “The whiter the body is, the more beautiful it is as well,” he wrote. “Color contributes to beauty, but it is not beauty. Color should have a minor part in the consideration of beauty, because it is not [color] but structure that constitutes its essence.” In 2003, however, a pair of married German archaeologists, Vinzenz Brinkmann and Ulrike Koch-Brinkmann, were able to display their discoveries in the presence of different pigments in 20 classical sculptures after nearly two decades of research.

Birth of Athena (detail). Hera, Aphrodite, Eros, Ares.

Reconstruction of the east pediment of the Parthenon according to drawing by Karl Schwerzek (1896).

Siblings, children and other family members of Zeus are witnesses to the birth of Athena. The majority of them look astonished at the new goddess.

We can see the figures possibly representing from right to left Hera sitting on her royal throne and the group of three: Aphrodite, Ares and the winged boy Eros who, according to a very popular version of the myth, was their son.

Riace Warriors, c. 460–430 BCE. Bronze.

The Riace bronzes are two life-size statues of nude, bearded warriors, which were literally pulled from the sea following their accidental discovery by a scuba diving party off the coast of Monasterace, Italy in 1972. They are a major find since most ancient Greek sculpture is known to us only through surviving Roman replicas, usually carved in marble (see the Dying Gaul). On the other hand, these rare figures are cast in bronze and feature eyes inlaid in bone and glass, silver teeth and copper-plated lips and nipples to heighten their naturalism and tactility. They owe their high state of preservation to having been submerged underwater all of these centuries.

So sexy. Where can I get a man like this?
