The Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest neighbouring spiral galaxy. Our galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy in 3-5 billion years. The Milky Way contains around three hundred billion stars, and the Andromeda galaxy is over twice as massive with a trillion stars, but the space between stars is so immense that any kind of direct collision is near impossible. Space is big

It was inevitable, really. Two inexorable forces tend to be like that, the stubborn bastards. Collis

It was inevitable, really. Two inexorable forces tend to be like that, the stubborn bastards. Collision courses without the option for aversion, because both of you are so wonderfully oblivious to the catastrophic event up ahead. Don’t bother tooting your horn, because I’m far too busy listening to Cake at full volume to ever hear you, concerned onlooker. I’m afraid this vehicle is going to be a write off.

Chassis on chassis, my claws digging into your bodywork, until we’re just a mess of fused metal and burning rubber. It doesn’t matter who hit who (I hit you), because we’re just as stuck on one another as each other. You’re not getting away, and I can’t get free, either. A ball of wreckage hurtling down the tarmac, both courses changed irrevocably.

I couldn’t be happier to be wreckage with you.

This galaxy, known as NGC 5907, seems to be an elongated line of stars and dark dust. But, the galaxy is actually categorized as a spiral galaxy just like our own Milky Way. In this new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, we don’t see the beautiful spiral arms because we are viewing it edge-on, like looking at the rim of a plate. It is for this reason that NGC 5907 is also known as the Knife Edge galaxy. It is about 50 million light-years from Earth and can be found in the northern constellation of Draco. Although not visible in this image, ghostly streams of stars on big arching loops extend into space, circling around the galaxy. It is believed that those are remnants of a small dwarf galaxy that was torn apart by the Knife Edge galaxy and merged with it over 4 billion years ago.
