they say distance makes the heart grow fonder
but that’s only because we’ve been gone longer
and i know that this could work
but i’m scared
because the once crystal blue lake
is now filled with murk
I don’t want to leave you

Because there’s a chance
that you’ll find someone better
Someone who’s there
Someone you don’t have to drive 5 or more hours to see
maybe once a month
I’m scared because I want to spend the rest of my life with you
and I know you do too
But what if someone better comes along
you don’t have to wait for months to see
You’re the one I’m going to grow old with
that much us obvious to you and me
but what if you decide it’s not worth it
that it’s too much hassle and heartache
that there’s a beautiful girl that’s right there
that you don’t have to wait on and drive 5 hours to see
what if she can give you more than me
what if she makes you happier than me
what if she makes it easier than me
what if it’s too hard to love me from so far away
what if it’s too much on you
I want to grow old with you
and live on a little farm house
with our ducks and dogs and cats and lizards and plants
I want a family and a comfortable life
even if we have to struggle
I want you
But what if someone better comes along
and sweeps you off your feet
quicker than i did
better than i did
that you don’t have to drive 5 or more hours to see
A few weeks ago I worked on a few very simple images of shapes in the sand left behind by the ocean’s tide. I was surprised by the powerful contemplative and calming nature of the images.
I’ve gone back through my library to find more such shots. I’ve pushed myself for simplicity. Black and white shots that create a space for the mind to quiet itself.
I will post the series over time. It’s a time for some contemplation.

Having fun with a bit of different style for this self portrait. Sometimes I have to remind myself of the joy in creating, of how much joy there is in me. When I am adrift in the Deep Black it is essential that I can be for myself enough, a reflexive exaltation of self-as-creator-and-created, that I can sense that I am here and say with this alone: Keep Going. Inertia is inevitable, comrades: make momentum your friend.

I wish you a thoughtful Ash Wednesday, comrades, and remind you that Sacrifice is the Cosmic Currency. Though I serve and seek at the call of Old Gods, I was raised in Catholic Culture. I have long felt that this perspective, that true change comes only through sacrifice, is powerfully illustrated in the story of Jesus. Even the God of Abraham could only twist the arc of fate, the nature of His covenant, with a sacrifice (of Himself to Himself). For this reason I find Lent a good season to meditate on this mantra. I hope you are finding meaning out there as Winter grows old and the new Spring stirs in Her nest. New art coming very soon.
