“…With silverbells and cockleshells…”

So, how does your garden grow?  April 14th marks National Gardening Day! This day allows seasoned home gardeners to learn even more about their gardens and different plants and to share their knowledge with others.  We’re here to help, with images of great gardens from our collection of Mission Indian photographs.

As you browse through these historic garden images, perhaps you’d like to share your gardening wisdom and show us some of your gardening gems. Reply in the comments with pics of your top harvests!

Dave’s baby peppers he planted from seed. Our Porch buddies for the next month or so. He hardens them off about a month. He brings them out on sunny days like this and puts them inside every night. Then they go in the greenhouse and outside garden. He likes to let the stems get strong and thick. Otherwise something eats the stems off at the ground every time. Any guesses? Cutworms? Slugs? Once the peppers are established they do fantastic without much help. But starting from seed definitely is more of a commitment than buying starts. It’s fun though and you get to pick out your own seeds. These are Tiburons and Krimson Lee peppers. Great for roasting. We absolutely love them! #pepperseeds #pepperseedlings #gardeningtips #gardenlife #gardeners #gardenblogger #foodie #homegrown #homegrownfood #peppermania

My Tuesday has revolved around nuture. In the quiet morning I meditated and stretched on the deck; at lunchtime I prepared my stand-by wholesome mid-day meal; and in the afternoon I made protein bites and harvested fresh basil and parsley to whizz up homemade pesto.

There was a fair bit of reading too - I am finding ‘This Naked Mind’ really interesting. It is about the unconscious mind, social conditioning, and neuro-linguistic programming as it applies to alcohol and societal/individual addiction.

Something bizarre and unsettling also occurred. I was the target of a screaming online troll who accused me of being a violent hoodlum; the kind of person who endorsed mass shootings (I had made a comment explaining the context of someone else’s post.) It was laughably ridiculous, as anyone acquainted with me knows, but the tone and language was confronting nonetheless. I’ve successfully managed to avoid trolls all these years but it made me think how people in the public eye must have to grow hides of kevlar. Obviously I blocked the individual, as I had no desire to see his response to my redress. ☯
