How Do I Create an Experiment? |Border Image Credit:  NASAESA, the Hubble SM4 ERO Team, and ST-ECF, Hubble

Usually when attempting an experiment, one will follow the steps of the scientific method, described below, even if some engineering is involved.

1. Make observations.

2. Propose a question.

3. Do thorough background research.

4. State the problem.

5. Construct a hypothesis and make predictions of the results.

6. Design and execute an experiment to test the hypothesis. During the experiment you will be basically controlling and measuring variables, which are divided into three types, explained below.

  • Controlled variable - You may have as many controlled variables as you wish. You will attempt to keep these variables constant and unchanging, so that if you have to re-do the experiment [which you most likely will because very few experiments go completely right the first time] you will be able to reproduce controlled variables exactly, or as closely as possible to how they were in the original experiment.
  • Independent variable - In most experiments there is only a singular independent variable, which is controlled by the experimenter[s]. During the experiment[s] you will control the independent variable and change it to observe the results.
  • Dependent variable - This variable depends on the independent variable, thus it’s title. You will focus upon this variable to see how it reacts in lieu of the change[s] of the independent variable. [This is the main variable you will focus on measuring.]

7. Collect results, analyze the data, and draw your conclusions. After collecting your results and analyzing them, do you accept or reject the hypothesis? If you choose to reject the original hypothesis because the results do not support it, go back and revise the hypothesis, and start over. If you’ve accepted your hypothesis because the results support it, feel free to draw conclusions.

There are varied steps depending on the type of experiment you are creating, and what your purpose of said experiment is. If the purpose of your experiment is to observe the way something works you will be using the scientific method, which I described above. If you are attempting to create and/or invent something through your experiment, [eg. products, experiences, environments, computer programs, etc.] then you will be using the engineering design process.

  • If you don’t know which process you should use check out this simple guide to comparing the engineering design process and the scientific method here
  • If you decided to the engineering design process is a better fit for your experiment, you can read the detailed steps and examples via NASA here.
  • A detailed list of steps and examples of the scientific method via NASA can be found here.

Fruit of the Womb: The Botanical Classification of Fruit

I created this illustration to tell the story of where fruits come from. Turns out they come from flowers, and that’s why a tomato is technically a fruit. What started as a fun conversation over dinner this summer spiralled into a deep exploration into pomology, carpology, and botanical literature. Here is my attempt at visualizing all the information I’ve synthesized over these past few months into a useful reference guide.

Hope you learned something new today.

Water Sources and Usage in Sweden’s Water Districts | March 2016

Infographic demonstrating the geographic locations and characterizations of Sweden’s Water Districts. Data demonstrate sources of water (ground water, surface water, sea water), population plotted against annual public and private water usage, and change in total water usage over the past 25 years.

More and more recently, I’ve begun to get some people coming to me asking for some clarification on LGBTQ stuff. When I was younger, I had to discover many basic identities and labels by myself, through research of various sources, or pieced together from disconnected blog posts.

In the year 2019 you’d think we’d have a kid-friendly website that describes all of this in simple terms but… I’ve yet to find one that isn’t primed for guardians/parents of LGBTQ parnets and prioratizes them instead of the LGBTQ kids themselves….

So I tried to make a quick graphic to organize everything!

Keep in mind - this is based on MY experience and the terminology I have grown up using. Everyone’s experiences may differ - and I tried to simplify in some places to make it easier to read. (For example… I didn’t really go into detail on non-binary identities… but I may make a seperate graphic for that someday because that’s its own box of pears.)

If you have feelings about this, feel free to go more in depth in the comments!

Here’s an old chart that I’ve decided to remake for the sake of pride.

Use toys and lubricants responsibly! Lube is a great aid, but you have to be careful where and how you use it.

Some caveats:

I only included the four most common types of toys. By plastic I mostly mean HARD PLASTIC. Please don’t use jelly-soft toys or the like, as they are often TOXIC.

The reason I made varying degrees of acceptability and the reason that oil lubricant looks so suspicious is because oil based lube will NOT wash out of your body naturally. And as such, it can cause infections. However, it isn’t bad IN ITSELF it’s just really more susceptible to making the environment of your genitals dangerous. Use caution.

This is meant to be a simple quick-glance guide, not an in-depth explanation of WHY these things don’t work or do. If you need info, google is just a click away! :)

nolongersilkbox:

Important note: The lubricant types listed here refer to the BASE of the lubricants. I am not suggesting you use water as a lubricant. You should use water-based-lubricant, or silicone-based lubricant when the situation allows it. For more information on lubricants, please refer to this chart.

Here’s a basic rundown of the 9 most popular toys you’ll find on the market.

A while ago I got an ask about sex toy shopping for the first time. I wanted to answer with a chart, but ended up taking forever. Sorry!

Is this the end of the list? NO!

There’s TONS more toys out there that you can and should try. However, since you will probably stumble upon these first, I wanted to give you all some basic information. If you wanna dispute something, that’s fine. Please reblog and add your comments!
