How Do I Create an Experiment? | Border Image Credit:  NASA, ESA, the Hubble SM4 ERO Team, and ST-EC

How Do I Create an Experiment? |Border Image Credit:  NASAESA, the Hubble SM4 ERO Team, and ST-ECF, Hubble

Usually when attempting an experiment, one will follow the steps of the scientific method, described below, even if some engineering is involved.

1. Make observations.

2. Propose a question.

3. Do thorough background research.

4. State the problem.

5. Construct a hypothesis and make predictions of the results.

6. Design and execute an experiment to test the hypothesis. During the experiment you will be basically controlling and measuring variables, which are divided into three types, explained below.

  • Controlled variable - You may have as many controlled variables as you wish. You will attempt to keep these variables constant and unchanging, so that if you have to re-do the experiment [which you most likely will because very few experiments go completely right the first time] you will be able to reproduce controlled variables exactly, or as closely as possible to how they were in the original experiment.
  • Independent variable - In most experiments there is only a singular independent variable, which is controlled by the experimenter[s]. During the experiment[s] you will control the independent variable and change it to observe the results.
  • Dependent variable - This variable depends on the independent variable, thus it’s title. You will focus upon this variable to see how it reacts in lieu of the change[s] of the independent variable. [This is the main variable you will focus on measuring.]

7. Collect results, analyze the data, and draw your conclusions. After collecting your results and analyzing them, do you accept or reject the hypothesis? If you choose to reject the original hypothesis because the results do not support it, go back and revise the hypothesis, and start over. If you’ve accepted your hypothesis because the results support it, feel free to draw conclusions.

There are varied steps depending on the type of experiment you are creating, and what your purpose of said experiment is. If the purpose of your experiment is to observe the way something works you will be using the scientific method, which I described above. If you are attempting to create and/or invent something through your experiment, [eg. products, experiences, environments, computer programs, etc.] then you will be using the engineering design process.

  • If you don’t know which process you should use check out this simple guide to comparing the engineering design process and the scientific method here
  • If you decided to the engineering design process is a better fit for your experiment, you can read the detailed steps and examples via NASA here.
  • A detailed list of steps and examples of the scientific method via NASA can be found here.

I made an infographic poster about the orcas that live in the PNW because I wanted to flex my data visualization skills. It’s pretty neat. Most of the information came from the Center for Whale Research. Orcas are so cool, you guys.

The media is moving on but I haven’t.

I’m not very good with words or emotions, but what I can offer is 10+ years of martial arts training and 20+ years of existing while female and Asian. I’ve tried to suppress bad memories as much as possible, but Atlanta really blew the lid off that strategy.
.
So here’s an infographic on an under taught truth of self-defense. It’s not a solution to systemic racism, but I hope it allows you to reclaim your agency, and walk down the street with a little less fear than yesterday.

A Global Guide to the Best Times for Travel Deals

For many destinations across the globe, the cheapest time to book hotels is in the beginning of the year. Average room rates during the first two weeks of January were below average in all 25 markets the study looked at. But travelers can also find bargains at other times of the year. In March there are deals to be found in Barcelona, London or Oslo. June and July, traditionally popular vacation months, are inexpensive times to book hotels in Dubai, Milan and Vienna. The last week in December, considered high season in most destinations, is a great time to travel to Oslo, Stockholm or Riyadh.

Hotel prices in some places, though, tend to be consistent throughout the year. Budget travelers in Asia will be disappointed to hear that there really is no low season for most of that region’s popular destinations. The cheapest time to travel to Tokyo is the first week of January, but even then hotel rooms are just 17% cheaper than average. Likewise in Taipei and Seoul seasonal hotel deals are limited. The best hotel deals in Taipei are the first week of July but prices then are only 9% cheaper than average; for Seoul the best week is the first week of January but you’ll only score a 10% discount.

Hopefully the handy infographic displays this data visually to help make those big travel plans.

Beat Bad Cravings – Replace With Healthy Alternatives

Here’s how to beat bad cravings. You see, when we are hungry and craving certain foods, it’s actually a particular thing our body needs. Because we usually associate that craving with unhealthy foods, that’s what we end up eating. This leads to the inevitable failure of our diets.

But it does not need to be this way. Below is a handy guide, showing you the alternative healthy option. So, for instance. Next time you are craving chips, eat a handful of nuts and seeds to satisfy your craving. Why will this work? It’s because you are actually craving nitrogen for your system. It’s just you associate that craving with chips.

Learning to recognise and beat bad cravings will set your diet on the road to success.

All herbs can adapt to life indoors and outdoors. It all depends on:
– The plant’s hardiness
– Time of year
– Soil type
– Temperature

General tips and tricks
Let there be light
Herbs need 4-6 hours of direct sun every day to grow healthily indoors.

Give the roots proper drainage
During winter, herbs will drink slowly. To prevent root-rot, make sure they have proper drainage, i.e. drain holes, rocks or plastic foam.

Don’t eat their solar panels
Larger leaves are the plant’s energy providers – make sure you cut off a mix of mature and brand new leaves (and never cut off all the leaves at once).

Propagate from existing plants
Many herbs — including oregano, thyme, rosemary, and sage — are best propagated for indoor growing by taking cuttings from outdoor plants.

Taking cuttings with care
Snip off a 4-inch section, measured back from the tip. Strip the lower leaves and place the stem into a moist, soilless mix, i.e. perlite and/or vermiculite. Cover the cutting with glass or clear plastic and it keep medium-moist.

InfographicThe Pros and Cons of Different Types of Home Flooring

If you’re looking to renovate a home or taking a look at new places to live, you should know the pros and cons of various flooring types. This visual guide covers nine different flooring types and how they rate when it comes to cost, durability, difficulty of installation, and how easy they are to clean.

The guide comes from Direct Buy, and lays out the pros and cons for ceramic or porcelain tile, floating wood tile, carpet, hardwood, engineered wood, bamboo, cork, stone, and vinyl flooring. Installing flooring can be an incredibly difficult task to take on, but it helps to know what you’re getting into - and whether the flooring type you like is actually worth it. One type might be easy to install, but is hard to clean. Another might be durable and easy to install, but is more expensive. Check the guide below to see what flooring might be best for you and your home.
