Even with the hoodie you had pulled on before leaving the house to meet up with your boyfriend, Felix, you were still shivering. Being that it was nearly 11 o’clock at night, the sun wasn’t out to warm you, but you were at least grateful that it was only late September and not later on in the year, so you didn’t have to trudge through snow to get to the mystery location Felix insisted on bringing you to for your birthday. So far you had driven to a church on top of a hill, parked in the very back of the parking lot, and trekked through a rocky-woodsy type area, and all the while he had been refusing to tell you exactly what he planned for the two of you to do that night. Finally, after stumbling twice and falling into Felix once, you made it to a relatively flat expanse of rock, and he took your hand to guide you a few more feet forward before coming to a stop.
Your breath caught in your throat; the ground cut away several feet in front of you to reveal the landscape of the neighboring towns, all of their lights twinkling in the dark as if little stars had fallen to the earth. In the distance you could see the skyline of the city that never sleeps still shining bright. You turned to your boyfriend, who was smiling at you, waiting for a response.
“Felix, this is beautiful!” you exclaimed.
“Not as beautiful as you,” he responded, making you grateful that the night was dark enough to hide the blush coming up your cheeks.
The two of you sat down on the ground to admire the stars together, but soon enough you were lying back together with Felix using his jacket as a pillow and you using, well, Felix, or at least his arm. He pointed out all of the asterisms and constellations that he knew the names of, like Cygnus the swan and the big dipper, and even the planet Venus.
“That little triangle looks like the freckles on your cheekbone!” you exclaimed, pointing to the three stars you were referring to. Felix chuckled at the comparison.
“Yeah, well those stars over there look like they match up to the freckles across the bridge of your nose,” he said. You rolled your eyes but smiled nonetheless.
“How can you even tell? I have so many that they run into each other and you can’t ever count them,” you asserted.
“You’re wrong about that, and I can prove it,” he insisted. Before you could ask him just how he planned on proving his claim, he gently turned your face towards his with one hand, placed a sweet little kiss on the tip of your nose, and whispered ‘one’ before continuing on with his counting. He peppered your face with kisses and counted to about nineteen or twenty before you were overcome with embarrassment and playfully pushed him away in order to hide your blushing, giggling face in your hands.
“Hey, you made me lose count!” Felix pouted. “Now I’m going to have to start all over!”
“Oh no, please don’t,” you said through your laughter. He gently pulled your hands away from your face and you were able to see his goofy smile.
“Aw, why not?”
“‘Cause maybe I want to have a turn and kiss you now.”
“Oh do you, now?”
“Yeah, I really do, and you know what? I think I just might,” you answered. Now it was his turn to be showered in affection as you leaned forward and pressed your lips softly to his. You could feel his heart start to beat harder in his chest. A moment later you pulled back and you couldn’t tell who was blushing harder, you or him. You then settled back in his arms to watch the stars for a little bit longer. Felix pressed a kiss to the top of your head before speaking.
“You know, of all the things the universe has done, I’m most grateful that it brought the two of us together.”
