James L. Allen was a photographer who ran a studio in Harlem from the 1920s to 1940s. There he photographed many of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance, including Paul Robeson and Langston Hughes.

We’re a couple days late celebrating the birthday of Langston Hughes (born February 1, 1902). This image is from an edition of “Let America be America Again”, originally published in 1938. As usual, Hughes’ words still have relevance today; the facing page reads:

We were intrigued by this play rendered in phonetics (“eminently suitable for foreign students of English” according to the introduction). And we were amused by the contrast between the standard English used in the stage directions and the phonetically-rendered dialogue, especially in the highlighted couplet.

We have a small collection of spiral-bound sampler books showcasing direct advertising material. Before the days of micro-targeted Instagram ads companies sent out paper advertisements to potential clients. It was important that the design caught the eye and that the paper was of a good quality. You’ll have to take our word on the paper quality, but here are some of the designs we liked in a 1941 version from the Paper Makers Advertising Association.

Autumn is here and the academic year started. I am really happy to be back at school, even though I am a bit worried about burning out again. I have gone back to re-writing notes and that is mainly what I do these days as it helps me digest everything, but I’ve also picked up books for the next few weeks… Assigned reading has no chill…
