Concept: an apocalyptic or post apocalyptic tv show centred on a group of disabled protagonists

Must include:

-enough details about how they survive that no one can call it “unrealistic”

-mental and physical disabilities

-a character who isn’t necessarily contributing to the survival of the group, but is not abandoned or looked down upon

-at least one character whose disability is actually less of a problem for them now that the world is ending/ended (example: autistic character who used to be constantly overstimulated but no longer is)

Optional features:

-abled person says “the only disability in life is a bad attitude” and gets told where to stuff it

-creatively weaponized mobility aids/assistive devices

-character who abled people think isn’t worth helping because of their disability, but actually has at least one skill essential to the survival of the group

-every time an abled person says something ignorant, all present disabled people look into the camera like they’re on the office

- character who only survived the initial apocalyptic event because they had an assistive device  which just so happened in that one circumstance to give them an advantage over everyone else

-the abled camp wearing rags and eating meat on sticks cooked over a crude fire. pans over to our heroes and they have perfect clothes, a variety of food and also music.

“what? how did you do that?”
“well, jane’s special interest is the medieval production of cloth and, like 8 of us can sew. Turns out those of us who can’t go out much develop a LOT of hobbies.”

A character who scares everyone when a zombie bites them but literally every one of their limbs are amputated.

“They…. they bit Gina.”

*Gina pulls of prosthetic arm* “It’s ok guys! They just got my decoy.”

(vibrates at the speed of sound)

I love this a normal amount

Defying Doomsday is an anthology of apocalypse fiction featuring disabled and chronically ill protagonists, proving it’s not always the “fittest” who survive – it’s the most tenacious, stubborn, enduring and innovative characters who have the best chance of adapting when everything is lost.

In stories of fear, hope and survival, this anthology gives new perspectives on the end of the world, from authors Corinne Duyvis, Janet Edwards, Seanan McGuire, Tansy Rayner Roberts, Stephanie Gunn, Elinor Caiman Sands, Rivqa Rafael, Bogi Takács, John Chu, Maree Kimberley, Octavia Cade, Lauren E Mitchell, Thoraiya Dyer, Samantha Rich, and K L Evangelista.

The Time of Israel published and deleted an article today: “When Genocide is Permissible.” – Authored by Yochanan Gordon

“The Times of Israel, an online news site, quickly took down Friday a blog post titled “When Genocide is Permissible,” in which writer Yochanan Gordon suggested that killing all Palestinians is justifiable.”

“Hamas has stated forthrightly that it idealizes death as much as Israel celebrates life. What other way then is there to deal with an enemy of this nature other than obliterate them completely?” – wrote Gordon

black-to-the-bones:

He was an activist who inspired millions to fight for their rights. He knew what was wrong with our country and risked his life to help his people achieve equality.  In the society where black were treated like animal he did everything possible to change this. His brave soul, his will and courage changed the history of America , changed the people. He made us believe we can win this war. He payed for it with his life. He will always be remembered.

Respecting his memory also means acknowledging that his fight is far from over, black people are facing the same issues that ha birth to the Black Panthers, and that the FBI is basically trying to launch COINTELPRO 2.0 against BLM and other black activists. Hampton should be more than a history lesson, he should be a rallying point.

Excellent livre dressant le portrait de femmes badass enterrées au Père Lachaise, et souvent oubliées au profit d'homme.

Currently reading The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue. I am around 100 pages in, and so far I am really enjoying it. There is something to be said about reading a story about the influenza pandemic while we are going through the coronavirus pandemic ourselves, but that does make the story more impactful. Perhaps the fact that I my parents are doctors, and I myself have volunteered at the hospital has something to do with it. It’s definitely a book that is resonating with me deeply.

I have a huge admiration for Julia, who seems to be a great nurse, and has the makings to be a great doctor one day! Is that something that might be set up to happen in the future? I guess I will have to keep reading and find out!

21 books I want to read in 2021

Today to share some of the books I am looking forward to reading this year. I have had some of these books for a few years, and others have been recent purchases, but all of these are books I really want to get through this year.

Some standouts:

1. The Secret History; my most recent read. This is one book I picked up because it seemed like this cult classic, especially over on Tumblr. I must say, it definitely lived up to the hype.

2. Winter in Sokcho; a book I picked up last year because I thought the cover was pretty

3. The Smell of Starving Boys; A book I picked up from @gaystheword 3 years ago. I’ve been wanted to read it ever since, but the mood never seemed to be right?

4. The Priory of the Orange Tree; this book comes highly recommended by a lot of my friends, and it’s one of 3 chunky books I want to get through this year.

Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it • The Secret History by Donna Tartt

• Tom King’s The Vision •

If you have been watching @wandavision on @disneyplus then you may have already seen this comic being mentioned by people when discussing theories about what’s happening next, or one which has been recommended to you if you are interested in exploring the source material. Well, I have to say, I can definitely see why this comic came so highly recommended by so many people on Twitter! It is absolutely brilliant, visceral, dark, and heartbreaking. I absolutely devoured this comic and would definitely recommend it to any WANDAVISION fans out there!

Dangerous Women by Hope Adams

Publishing 04 March 2021

Based on a real life voyage, Dangerous Woman is a tale about confinement, hope and the terrible things we do to survive.

I am not a usually a big fan of historical fiction, but Dangerous Women had be hooked for the beginning!

I found the structure of the narrative, switching between timelines, and well as the narrators, easy to follow, and allowed for a great insight into the lives of some really compelling, well-rounded characters. The women were allowed to take center stage, and we got to experience their friendships, their hopes, and their fears through Adams’ masterful storytelling.

If you are a fan of historical fiction/ mystery then you definitely don’t want to miss this release, and if you are not a fan of the genre, or haven’t explored it yet, but always wanted to give it a go, this would be a great book to do that with!

Thank you to Michael Joseph for providing me with the proof! I will definitely be purchasing copies for my friends!

The Beauty of the House is immeasurable; its Kindness infinite

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

I finally read Piranesi! I first started reading this book in 2021, but I just could not get into it. It just felt like I was forcing myself to get past the first few pages, and so I decided to leave it to one side for a bit.

I recently re-visited it again, after being encouraged by my friend to do so, and I am so glad I did, because this time, I loved it! I took my time with the story, letting Piranesi guide me through the house, as he discovers more about its inhabitants, and how they came to be there. It is truly a strange but fascinating tale of one man and his relationship with the place he inhabits.

The prose is charming, and while I initially found it to meander quite a bit, as I got comfortable with the writing style, I did find that it suited the story it was a part of. It reminded me a bit of Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun both in terms of the way the writing flowed, and in the way Klara and Piranesi viewed the world around them. There is a marriage of joy and melencoly to both their stories, which I found to be quite beautifully done.

The character of Piranesi is so easy to fall in love with. He sweet, curious, and so at peace with himself, and so open to learning and discovering the world around him. There is a lot we could learn from him.

We all have books which we started reading, but for one reason or another, didn’t manage to get through. These are some of mine. These are books I either started reading, but never got around to finishing, as well as soon books I just really want to read this month, but because I have so many unfinished books, I am a bit hesitant to start new ones!

What book are on your unfinished stack? The ones you *do* want to get back to at some point?

Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder

I am still reading Nightbitch but I wanted to share some of my thoughts on it so far…

Firstly, it really reminds me of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I know that this may not be the most ‘original’ observation, and others who have read the book would have drawn on the similarities as well, but the parallels are interesting. Both women have been ‘stopped’ from working by their husbands, and a complication and troubled relationship with motherhood, which had bought on a great deal of stress and anxiety for the women, manifesting in some concerning and and disturbing ways. It is also evident that the mental health of these women is not taken seriously, or dealt with sensitively by their partners.

As a woman myself, I can relate to the anxieties surrounding dependence and impending motherhood. The idea of being do dependent, almost at the mercy of a partner, where it is usually the mother who is expected to give up her ambitions, careers, freedoms etc. to take care of their children can be daunting. It is an immense responsibility, and you are expected to put on the performance of the grateful wife, or a doting mother, and never show any cracks.

I have heard some great reviews of this book, especially in terms of a woman’s journey through motherhood, and I am looking forward to the rest of the novel.

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

So, I don’t usually read romance novels, and contemporary romance is a genre I tend to avoid. Not because I think they are badly written or anything, but I just don’t tend to pick them up when browsing for books.

but this year, I wanted to read more books which I normally wouldn’t, so when I saw this book in Tesco while i was put grocery shopping, I decided to pick it up and give it a go.

and I have to say, I quote enjoyed it. It was fast paced (I read it in one sitting!) It was fun, cute, and used the fake dating tropes really well, and did not take itself too seriously. The characters were relatable and lovable, and there were so many scenes where I could not stop smiling and giggling because of the awkward (and cute) situations Ahn put Olive and Adam in.

I liked that the setting was that of a university, with both characters being into STEM, as I have seen too many rom-coms set in the publishing world now, and I like this this went in a different direction.

My only issue would have been the sex scene? It just took me out of the flow of the story and felt awkward and a bit too much?

Overall, I would give the book 3.75 stars.

I finally read a Sally Rooney!

I decided to start with Normal People, as I was already familiar with the characters and they story (because I had watched the show) and I have to say, for all their communication problems, and their self sabotage, and their refusal to be happy, I quite liked the book! I get why the Connell and Marianne act they way they do, but I love them so much, I really wish they would allow themselves to be happy with each other and face the challenges life throws at them together. I would like to imagine a life for them where they get married, have a beautiful family, and get the life they really deserve!

(Can you tell I want all romances to have happy endings, with sunshine and rainbows and love and hugs )

Rooney is clearly a great writer, and I found her prose to be beautiful. I got through the book fairly quickly after I got used to her style, and I will definitely be reading A Conversation with Friends next!

I finally got around to reading The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak, and it did not disappoint! By now I know that Shafak’s writing style is something I really enjoy, so it was easy to slip back into her prose and let it carry me away on a journey through London and Cyprus.

This story really moved me in ways I didn’t quite expect it to. Tales of forbidden love are available in abundance, but the way it was written, in the backdrop of so much pain and unrest, I was not expecting it to hit me like it did.

I have the book 4.75 ⭐️ on StoryGraph. It’s definitely a must read and I can’t believe it took me so long to get to this one!

This is How You Lose The Time War

“I want to meet you in every place I ever loved. Listen to me. I am your echo. I would rather break the world than lose you”

Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.

Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

Cowritten by two beloved and award-winning sci-fi writers, This Is How You Lose the Time War is an epic love story spanning time and space.

This book has found it’s place in my top ten books of 2021. What can I say about this book, which makes for a good review, rather than just a long gush fest? Let’s try, shall we?

Well first of all, it’s sci-fi, but that’s not what the book is really about. It’s a love story, but also more than that. Not your typical enemies to lovers story, it’s a tale of how two agents have formed a bond with each other, which spans across time and space. It is a relatively short book, only 198 pages long, but it definitely manages to do the story justice. I found it to be fulfilling, and enjoyable. The writing was poetic, without being pretentious.

While I enjoyed the sci-fi element of the story, I did struggle a bit to fully get my head around the world building. But Blue and Red’s love story was such a strong anchor, that I would still give this book 5 stars ⭐️

Summary: This story follows the path of someone who turns pity into malice and revenge into a lifestyle. Someone who doesn’t believe in love’s power and strays from what little good she has in her heart.

Myriad is a fae with the rare ability to leech magic from other face, leaving them husks of their former selves. Myriad worked for and was Amarantha’s secret pet, spy and lover. After the Queen’s death, Myriad leaves to live in solace. On her journey, she’s captured by Hybern and set with a task to complete. Penetrate the workings of the Nightcourt and report to the King.
During this time she falls in with the Inner Circle by a chance meeting with a male from her past. She must then gain their trust, in turn, discovering things about herself in the process, fighting the unbreakable command the King of Hybern gave her.

(This follows the ending of A Court of Thorns and Roses thru to the end of the series. Slow burn Azriel/Myriad)
(Roughly inspired by Disney’s Maleficent.)
(Banner by Charlie Bowater)

The sentries paid no heed to the little red fox that picked its way through the autumn leaves and brush. It flicked it’s tail, giving them a look with it’s yellow eyes before it leapt over a rock and passed into the entrance to the lower levels of the Autumn court, an entrance the guards were guarding.

The fox trotted silently down, towards the glowing, warm light that shone at the end of the long hallway. It was cool and crisp underground, ventilated by a system that allowed the outside air to filter into the underground city.

The animal stopped right outside the entrance, sat down, and began to stretch almost grotesquely. It’s shape twisted and rippled, it’s red fur began to disperse and gather on its head. The limbs lengthened and the body grew until instead of a fox sitting on the ground, it was a female fae. She shook her head, her curls falling about her shoulders before she drew her hair back and pulled it into a tie. She blinked her russet colored eyes, the same color as the fox’s eyes and smiled.

The Autumn court was easy to penetrate if one knew the ways to get in.

Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman

Rating: 8/10

I was really torn on what to score this one, somewhere between 7 and 8 but I settled on 8/10 when I remembered how much this book touched me and left me feeling even weeks after I’d finished

For those that haven’t read the book or seen the movie, this novel is a beautiful story about a summer romance between two men that touches both of their lives so deeply and how they developed such a strong love for each other. This book came to me at a time in my life where I had recently ended a relationship and it was such a great book to help with the healing and emotional process that I was going through. The story follows the life of Elio, a young boy who’s parents host an academic each year at their summer home in Italy to stay with them and work on their work, and along comes Oliver. The relationship between Oliver and Elio is one built on stolen glances and rooted in suppressed desire; reading the way in which these two characters interact with one another, as well as how they struggle to come to terms with both their feelings and denial is one that is not only gripping, but beautiful.

The way Aichman depicts this story between the two men is so touching and had such a lasting impact on me - I found myself thinking over different passages and interactions in the days and weeks following finishing the book. Without spoiling too much for those who are yet to experience Call Me By Your name in some capacity, the book really does communicate this idea of ‘the forbidden love’ as well as the element of true love as a reality.

This book was both painful to read, as well as a complete pleasure. The way Aichman describes Italy as a place, as well as the hidden references to mythology and literary classics made this such a joy thread - funny, clever, considerate and at times downright scandalous. I don’t think I’ve read a modern novel quite like it before.

A gorgeous story that’s skilfully written and allows for complete escapism and emersion into the love story between Elio and Oliver - and the ending completely shattered my heart. A must read for any hopeless romantics, or even those looking to get lost in a wonderful journey of navigating love.
