CULTURE • Is diversity in arts and athletics important? Absolutely. Not many ballerinas of East Indian, African, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American descent see a reflection of themselves in ballet. 5 years ago, TaKiyah Wallace of @browngirlsdoballet set out to change that. She sits down for an interview with our Culture Contributor, Courtney Savage (@iamcoconicole) to tell U247LSB why she’s still so passionate about it.

Final bow

Tonight i will give my final bow. Goodbye to my time on stage. My final highschool bow.-some0nereally

Acting

One day I’ll be able to tell that I am off the stage and have been for a while. I haven’t been able to see me in the mirror since you walked in. One day I’ll take my final bow and then it will all be over. Maybe then you will walk away when the curtain closes.-some0nereally

Choreography – Aditya Madiraju

Dancers – Aditya Madiraju and Monika Chadda

“This piece is called “Laga Chunari Mein Daag” and is inspired from the many abuse survival stories around the world. The piece was choreographed and performed for the 2nd showcase of “Junoon Performing Arts” at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center in New York City in November 2015. The idea of the piece is to show the struggle an abuse victim goes through in daily life which can include losing self-confidence and feeling diminished self-worth. I have tried to show the loss of confidence and how the victim is motivated to get her life back in control through this dance. It is a semi contemporary and Bollywood fusion piece that is based more on the aspects of expression and act. The original song is by Manna Dey.

The inspiration for the piece came from being associated with CLIMB (http://www.climbagainstsexualabuse.com/) a global non-profit organization committed to breaking the silence on sexual violence and creating a powerful movement of change. One very important thing said by Poonam Thimmaiah the Co-Founder and CEO of CLIMB which resonated with me was “do not call them victims, call them survivors”.

In the future I see making a bigger impact with more dancers involved in this piece and representing it on a much bigger platform. My vision is to integrate the daily struggles of life and create a piece around it, I feel rather than telling the audience a story we should tell them their story. A small effort to make a change through performing arts.”

Aditya Madiraju moved to the USA in 2010 to pursue his masters and has been working in New York for 3 years. He is actively involved in dance while juggling his full-time IT job. Aditya believes dancing is a form of art which anyone can connect to as a performer or as an audience member watching a piece come to life. He aims to use this medium to make impactful choreographies about social issues. Aditya has been involved and performed at many charitable events including one for Sakhi in 2014. Future goals are to take his work to a much bigger audience and create awareness and awakening. Other interests involve painting and theater which he aims to pursue more actively very soon.

A magical experience for the final for Navras, performance by, The Rajasthan Roots Caravan (@rajasth

A magical experience for the final for Navras, performance by, The Rajasthan Roots Caravan (@rajasthanroots) , directed by Aditya Bhasin.
Exploring the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan’s folklore the Rajasthan Roots Caravan is an audio visual extravaganza presenting a contemporary and explosive package of song, dance and instruments. The Caravan has picked up the finest folk talents through more than a decade of its travels, with everything from a drum circle of Nagaras, to firebreathers, percussive battles of the Khurtals (castanets) and Dhol (Giant Drum), to the Chari (fire pots) and Kalbeliya (snake) dances. The Morchang (jews harp) players create a psychedelic trance, and the Braj dancers swoon with their peacock dance and showers of love and flower petals.
All this and more, held together by the acclaimed folk fusion band - Rajasthan Roots, having enthralled audiences around the world for over a decade seamlessly mixing western instruments and beats with the traditional songs and sounds of Rajasthan. With their unique presentation of Rajasthan blues, Sufi Rock and popular folk, they create the new sounds of Rajasthan.
