Another Monstera Monday
Did I take our most mature monstera with a new leaf down two flights of stairs to take this photo? Yeah, I might have but in my defense, our basement gets some really lovely direct light in the late afternoon. Not pictured: all the plants I moved to make way for this big ole girl.
Pacific Ninebark, Physocarpus capitatus (Rosaceae)
The genus name comes from the Greek Physa (bladder) and carpos (fruit), describing the inflated follicle fruits. The flowers are in a capitate inflorescence. Though called a ginger, this plant is not related to culinary ginger (Zingiber officinale, Zingiberaceae). Though some have used this plant as a ginger substitute, all plants in this family contain Aristolochic acid, which is classified as a carcinogen.

Interestingly, this plant lacks petals. It is the maroon tepals which have long tails (caudate means “having a tail”).

Ground-ivy, Glechoma hederacea (Lamiaceae). This Eurasian intro is a common weed in our area. The specific epithet “hederacea” means “ivy-like”. Though, Ivy (the genus Hedera) is completely unrelated to this plant and in the family Araliaceae.

Siberian Miner’s-Lettuce, Claytonia sibirica (Montiaceae). Not as tasty as its perfoliate counterpart, but still edible. The name is Miner’s-Lettuce because early settlers and miners used it in salads. (Not related to garden lettuce, Lactuca sativa in the Asteraceae ).
