bee-tales:

Let’s just remember that her death isn’t a trend. It isn’t “hot tea” or drama. It was a traumatic event. It wasn’t a viral trend or headline. She is more than just a hashtag or a symbol. She was a living, breathing, person and the police had absolutely no right to murder her.

Today, only one of the LMPD officers responsible for the death of Breonna Taylor was indicted on three counts of wanton endangerment. For firing into neighboring apartments. He is being held on a $15,000 bond. The other two officers are still employed by LMPD.

Today, Kentucky has confirmed that the life of Breonna Taylor did not matter.

We’re losing the fight

People please please please spread this. Hong Kong is under attack. We used to be an amazing city, we still are. We served as the link between East and West, and had a relatively good relationship with Mainland China. We were technically a part of them, but we kept our own laws and government under the Basic Law (HK law agreed on by both China and England). We had freedom; freedom of speech, religion, protest, all that. We stood up for what’s right.

Throughout Hong Kong’s history, we’ve always had a great relationship with the police force. Just look at the Umbrella Revolution of 2014, it was pretty dang peaceful considering the number of people out on the streets. Sure there were isolated incidents, but overall? There was a mural agreement between protestor and police. We do what we have to do, we fight for what we believe is right, we try to minimalize casualties. That’s not the case anymore

The city has turned into a battlefield. The police have become demons. They’re ruthlessly beating innocent civilians and passerbys. They sprayed pepper spray into a crowded train compartment. They pepper sprayed a pregnant woman directly in the face several times before proceeding to pull her to the ground and beat her. They shot people in the chest, leg, and eye point black. A lot of us don’t even think they are the police of Hong Kong anymore. We believe they are soldiers from the Mainland. They are tearing the city apart

I also feel the need to clear up some things. We are NOT fighting for independence. This started out as a protest against the extradition treaty that would strip Hong Kong of our right to free speech. It has evolved into a protest against police brutality and government negligence, and those two things have only gotten worse and worse. Again, this is not a fight for independence. We just want our city back, we just want One Country Two Systems (the agreement made between China and England. Hong Kong will be a part of China, but have a separate government and a separate justice and social system) back

PLEASE BOOST THIS. Not enough people know about the violence against the citizens. Outside media has painted the protesters as the villains when that is not the case. I’ll come back to add photos and videos to this post, but as for right now, please just BOOST THE HECK OUT OF THIS

closet-keys:

the fact that police on the scene

  • did not stop the shooter from entering the building
  • saved their own kids and left other kids to die
  • handcuffed and pepper sprayed parents trying to save their kids

is the reason why I truly believe that no matter how bad a situation is, calling the police will not improvethe situation. even in a worst case scenario where I might die, I don’t think I would ever call them.

when talking police abolition a lot of people will (often in genuinely good faith) ask what we would do without them in these specific horrific cases of the mass shooter. and the answer is– we would have to try our best to save ourselves and each other, just like we already do now, but without the threat of being handcuffed, pepper sprayed, or reported to ICE while doing so.

The situation is horrific, but we are moreable to survive and help others to survive without the presence of police. I think it’s scary to acknowledge that, because we want there to be someone who we can rely on to save us, and so it’s easy to let ourselves believe that police are that someone. but they aren’t. and internalizing that we’re alreadyon our own against that type of violence and harm is hard. but once we can internalize it, we can start figuring out ways to prevent, mitigate, respond to, and heal from this sort of harm together.

Seeing the governor wishing people a good George Floyd Remembrance Day like dude during the uprising you brought in the guard to terrorize people in their own neighborhoods

June is pride month and we as a community need to remember that our history was not a peaceful history. We did not shy away from punching police officers and destroying property because the police sure as hell did not shy away from beating and raping and killing us and raiding our bars and businesses. We did not shy away from breaking the law because our very existence was against the law. And we cannot forget that working class lgbt people of colour, especially black gays and lesbians, were and still are fundamental in the fight against the pervasive system of homophobia that still exists today. Remember and acknowledge them, and remember and acknowledge that we would not have our rights if not for riots and revolutions.

My blog is supposed to be solely for lesbian/LGBT content, but having the platform that I do, this is too important to not post about. As a non-black lesbian, I must speak up against the injustices faced by the black community, and I urge my followers to do the same. The LGBT community owes so much to black gays and lesbians both historically and today. Please consider donating to any of these organizations shown in the picture. I will provide the links for them below.

George Floyd’s Family’s GoFundMe: https://gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd

Minnesota Freedom Fund: https://minnesotafreedomfund.org

Black Visions Collective: https://www.blackvisionsmn.org

Reclaim the Block: https://www.reclaimtheblock.org

Campaign Zero: https://www.joincampaignzero.org

Unicorn Riot: https://unicornriot.ninja

Both NBPOC (non-black people of colour) and white people have the responsibility to combat anti-blackness in our communities. As an Asian lesbian, it is my responsibility to combat anti-black racism in the Asian and LGBT communities. I again urge my followers, if you have not already, start supporting black lives and uplifting black voices today.

theconcealedweapon:

A child is abducted and murdered. The child’s parents demand justice. Someone responds that they should quit complaining about abductions until they do something about abusive parents.

That response is considered the evilest of evil.

A black person is murdered by police. The family demand justice. Someone responds that they should quit complaining about police brutality until they do something about black on black crime.

That response, which follows the exact same logic, is considered a reasonable response.

In a society where black people are treated in ways that would be considered beyond cruel to treat anyone else, how am I supposed to believe that white supremacy isn’t a real problem?

20 July 2001 - Death of Carlo Giuliani

tw: police violence, death

In July 2001, anti-globalization demonstrators protested the 27th G8 summit in Genoa, Italy, where leaders of the world’s major industrialized nations met.

Among these protesters was Carlo Giuliani, a 23-year-old Roman Italian and resident of Genoa, whom a police officer shot and killed during what had become a riot two miles from the summit. It was the first death in an anti-globalization demonstration since its rise from the 1999 Seattle WTO protests.

According to a Reuters photographer, who took photographs of the incident, Giuliani and several other young, male protesters had surrounded and attacked a police van with rocks and other weapons. Italian television broadcast several photographs, in which Giuliani threw a fire extinguisher at the van. A hand from inside the van then fired a pistol in response, and Giuliani collapsed behind the van. Further photographs and reports show that the van had run over his legs twice after he was shot. The Italian interior minister confirmed that Giuliani had been hit by a bullet fired in self-defense by a police officer, who was later hospitalized for his injuries.

In 2009, the European Court of Human Rights recognized that the police officer had shot in self-defense, but it also criticised the Italian state because the investigation on this case had been superficial and lacking.

[Image IDs: A series of tweets about the recent mass shooting in Uvalde Texas. TW mass shooting, police brutality, racism, fascism

Tweets one-four from Read Wobblies and Zapatistas @ JoshuaPotash read “Police tackling parents instead of saving children when the crucial moment came has to be the end. It has to be the end of your faith in police. The end of the idea that police exist to keep us safe. We need to move past this dangerous myth, now, and towards actual public safety.

I can’t get over how cops confronted the shooter at the door, let him get by them, then made up a story about body armor. While a teacher gave her life trying to defend her kids. The difference could not be clearer.

And, two years to the day of George Floyd’s murder, cops are still killing 3 people a day. To pretend they equate with public safety is deadly. They don’t keep us dafe [safe], they protect the ruling class while draining resources from everyone else.

To ask teachers to be on the front line of mass shootings, the front line of a pandemic, and the front line of the struggle against inequality all while underpaying them and systematically underfunding the education system is both cruel and a recipe for social collapse.

The remainder of the tweets are a thread from William C. @ williamcson and read “It’s hard for some to hear, but the police being a threat to people who need help is police work. That’s the *standard*. The USA is one of the most carceral, highly policed societies imaginable. If policing was going to prevent these crises here it would be happening.

The question keeps coming up: “Why didn’t they do their job?” They did do exactly what they were trained to do. Their job is to *police* the vulnerable. Policing and protecting those in need are two completely different things. We’re paying for policing, not our protection.

Calling 911 may get us killed by police when we need help. We all know this. They show up to do police work and violence is their primary go-to. This is not an institution rooted in addressing the issues that cause problems around us. Policing is policing, that’s the job.

If we want peace and protection that has to come from us, it’s not going to come from the police. That’s not the purpose they serve and it never has been. They’re doing their job. Forget “reimagine”/reform police. We need to build a society where ALL needs are actually addressed.

The USA doesn’t have infrastructure despite being a wealthy empire. The ruling class hoards everything. We get less and less as prices go up. Police and politicians protect this setup. We have to fight this raggedy country for BASIC resources and policing ain’t gonna fix it.

The USA is DECADES behind the rest of the world. Like we’re over here still talking about guarantees around healthcare, mass transit, housing, and food. We’re trying to survive in this draconian nightmare while being tortured by constant exploitation. Policing makes this worse.

The right-wing are fascists and liberal politics make this worse by compromising. If we want the unacceptable to change, we have to force it to. These scenarios don’t have to keep repeating. Force, not ask, or accept every “right” we got being taken. They’re not going to stop.

When you begin to see the police as state-sanctioned mass shooters, you understand why they’re not preventing mass shootings.

The police are part of the problem of mass shootings, not the answer. How many of us have to look at an officer and see a potential killer in the meantime between potentially getting killed by another civilian in the chaotic USA?

White supremacists and would-be killers of all sorts join police forces because they want to kill with impunity. From its origins, the institution of policing was not designed to protect life. It’s designed to control and kill based on oppression and discrimination.

Police are going to keep doing what they’ve always done and killing who they’re designed to kill. There isn’t any point in pretending policing is neutral. It’s a ruling class tool connected to the larger culture of white supremacy that has enabled mass shootings.

Politicians, the wealthy, and the far-right start talking about the police *immediately* any time they see an opportune crisis to bolster these forces. They know what policing is for, does everyone else?” End ID]

Hero

What. Is. Her. Name.

Thanks to a follower for finding this: Her name is Venus Green.

From this article:

In July 2009, Green’s grandson, Tallie, was shot and wounded. Tallie said he was shot at a convenience store, but police insisted it happened inside Green’s house and that the shooter was either Tallie or Green.

“Police kept questioning him. They wouldn’t let the ambulance attendant treat him,” Green said. “So, I got up and said, ‘Sir, would you please let the attendants treat him? He’s in pain,’” Green said.

Green said the officer said to her, “Oh, you did it, come on, let’s go inside. I’ll prove where that blood is. You did it.”

Police wanted to go the basement, where Tallie lived, but Green refused on the basis that the police did not have a warrant.

“I said, ‘No, you don’t have a warrant. You don’t go down in my house like that. He wasn’t shot in here.’” Green said the officer replied, “I’m going to find that gun. I’m going to prove that you did it.”

A struggle ensued between a male officer and Green.

“He dragged me, threw me across the chair, put handcuffs on me and just started calling me the ‘b’ name. He ridiculed me,” Green said.

An officer went into the basement and Green locked him inside.

“She locked the door, the basement door. She basically took matters into her own hands,” Nilson said.

“This was my private home, and if I latched it, that was my prerogative because he had no search warrant to go in my basement. So, I had to right to latch it,” Green said.

Green said she suffered a separated shoulder in the scuffle, and she sued the Police Department for assault and violations of her rights.

“I was once a block watcher, department head of a high school. (I’ve) been around education for over 50 years. (I’m a) law-abiding citizen, I’ve never been arrested, I paid my taxes, owned my home, my husband died 34 years ago. (I) raised my son and I have been brutally abused,” Green said. “I feel like the Police Department needs to go back to school.”

Ok, y'all. I’ve seen the shit commentary, I’ve seen the “lolololol wtf is this why wouldn’t you show your face at protests, don’t you want to put your face out there?”

And THIS IS WHY. Cops are ABSOLUTELY retaliating against protesters for the act of participating in protests. They ARE looking at your social media and using it to trump up charges. They’ve been doing this for… ever.

If you don’t care for yourself, fine. Take that risk yourself. But you don’t get to make that decision for other people. Don’t upload identifiable information about other protesters. This isn’t about “Main Character Syndrome” or whatever ridiculous shit you’ve convinced yourself of, this is happening.

And if someone is actively telling you to put your face out there on the internet and the face of others being at protests, either they’re SUPER naive about the potential consequences of doing so, or they’re not actually on your side. ‍♂️

Personally, I’m leaning toward “there are a lot of uniformed and naive people out there,” because I don’t think cops are out there acting like jackasses on Tumblr. But like.

Don’t be one of those people. Don’t encourage people to upload images of the faces of protesters or shame people for not wanting images of themselves uploaded.

Don’t.

Also, according to Reddit, police have been trying to edit police brutality out of Wikipedia (both now and previously). If you edit or know someone who does, please share. (Source)

Big Warning

If you see a police car or a cop with a speaker looking thing on it, FUCKING RUN. It’s known as an LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device), a device that, when activated, can permanently damage your hearing and cause serious harm. If you’re too close, you’ll be left in a lot of pain and squirming on the ground permanently deaf. Ear plugs do not work. Unless you have one of those shooting range headphones, you do not stand a chance against them. Again, if you see them pull up, RUN. This is what they look like.

Stay safe.
