Valentine’s Day is nearly upon us! And while it can be a time of joy for many, for some it is more bittersweet, recalling memories of past heartache. If you fall into the latter camp this year, don’t fret—we uncovered the remedy you might need in an old manuscript recipe book.
“A Cure for Love” was penned on one page of this 19th century Collection of Useful Receipts, a handwritten book containing recipes for food as well as home remedies for various diseases and conditions. And while some of the directions might be a tad difficult to follow, we’ve been assured that this cure is the best around:
Take a gram of sence [sense] half a gram of Prudence a dram of understanding one ounce of patience a pound of resolution and a Handful of Dislike intermix them all together fold them up in the [???] brick of your brain there let them stand for twenty four howers [hours] then set them on the slow fire of hatred Straing [?] it clean from the dregs of Melon- -colly [melancholy] sweetning it with forgetfulness putting it in the Bottle of your heart stop[p]ing it down with a cork of sound judgment there let it stand fourteen days in the water of cold Affliction this rightly made and fully ap[p]lied is the most effectunate [effectual?] remedy in the universe you may have it at the house of under- -standing in constant street by going up the hill of self denial In the town of forgetfullness in the County of Love
This cure for love appears alongside many other medical remedies, including ointments for “warts and corns” and a supposed cure for smallpox. Whoever created this manuscript apparently considered love a very serious condition indeed.
Hi friends! I worked with my mom to put together a digital book of her Mexican recipes to help raise money for my parents while they’re out of work + my mom recovers from surgery soon! $11 for 11 recipes ❤️
My lovely people, I’m a chef in training and this book is a wish come true! Well it’s not exactly a professional gourmet bible but I love art and this is epic. Salli Swindell and Nate Padavick the founders of this amazing website http://www.theydrawandcook.com provided a platform for artists around the world.
What do they do? They create illustrated recipes, how cool is that?
This book features 107 illustrated recipes from their website. Every artist has contributed to this book with their own unique style. The illustrations are beautiful, humorous and sometimes downright cute. There are so many variations! The recipes range from drinks to desserts and everyday to extraordinary. You can’t be sure who’s cooking. I could be a cat cooking brownies or sexy anime like characters making hot apple citrus punch or a Yeti tossing ingredients here and there. Even the recipe names are fun; Starving artist goo-lash, Colcannon, Beetrooty-Yogurty-Thingummyji, Monkey banana cream, etc.
The book is sturdy, hardcover and very colorful. The pages are glossy and the illustrations are hand drawn and then scanned so the originality of the art remains. Even though you are not a big fan of kitchen work, this book will surely make you smile.
This book is the perfect blend of art and food and what could be better than that? Oh wait the website!
This colorful, warm drink is called moon milk. Moon milk is the ancient Ayurvedic tradition of drinking warm milk infused with healing herbs and spices at bedtime to aid in curing insomnia. This beautiful version was created by Gina Fontana of Healthy Little Vittles. She is an avid follower of the Ayurvedic practice and has actually written a book, Moon Milk, featuring over 50 different plant-based, dairy-free moon milk recipes.
This is a rather fascinating read. It’s a cocktail recipe book, and a bit more than that.
“Field Guide to Hendrick’s: Vol. Two”
I love Hendrick’s gin and I have every bottle so far from their cabinet of curiosities. This was on the shelf of a used bookstore for like $2 so of course I had to!!
Various recipes for cocktails, a little bit of history on Hendrick’s, and some other interesting information. Honestly a darn good deal.
I haven’t shown you part of my blood sweat and tears from this year!! I illustrated a book for the first time a recipe book for kids!
I also illustrated other story books for Fleurus Editions (France) that I can’t wait to show you. I really can’t thank enough the team at Fleurus because this is a dream come true
See my stories for a quick inside view. I’ll post better images very soon
