US ONLY.

Thanks so much!

Studies have shown our four-legged companions can smell volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are specific chemicals produced by the human body that enter our blood, urine, feces, skin, or breath. Dogs have been trained to detect VOCs unique to diseases like epilepsy, cancer, diabetes, and infections caused by pathogens like malaria.

Tumblr made me believe the worst about people when I was younger. It made me believe that all men were out to hurt and take advantage of me. It told me that blacks can’t be racist and showed me the opposite. It told me that Ted Cruz abused his wife. I met and talked to her. She denied anything but good from her husband. You lie just to prove your points and help your own agendas. You create other accounts to spread hateful things just so you look like a hero when you reply to them. Never trust anything you see on Tumblr without researching it. Not even from me.

James Dewar was born #OnThisDay in 1842.

The Scottish chemist and physicist co-directed the Davy-Faraday Research Lab at the Ri from the end of the 19th Century. He is best known for inventing the Dewar flask aka vacuum flask aka Thermos.

Though he sadly didn’t profit from its widespread popularity, as he didn’t patent his invention before Thermos started using the design ()

Dewar’s flask aided his work into the liquefaction of then-so-called permanent gases like hydrogen and helium, as he could work at temperatures close to absolute zero ❄️

Whilst at the Ri he built machinery to yield high quantities of liquid oxygen, and showed that liquid oxygen and liquid ozone are attracted to the poles of a magnet

Watch our liquid oxygen magnetism demo here ➡  https://youtu.be/rz57PJToGEs

Dewar created liquid hydrogen for the first time in 1898, solid hydrogen  in 1899, and he attempted to create liquid helium in the early 20th century

Click through an interactive version of this photo for a deeper look at his lecture on liquid hydrogen…

He also gave 9 series of Christmas Lectures for children! On topics ranging wide from ‘A Soap Bubble’ to 'The Story of a Meteorite’ to 'The Chemistry of Light and Photography’.

What a guy. Happy Birthday James Dewar

Hello all European Adults!

I need participants for my study on sexual and romantic orientation, outness and physical and mental health. It’s for my masters thesis so it will be available through the university of Vienna if you are interested in the results!

https://www.soscisurvey.de/healthoutness/

It will only take about 10-20 minutes and the only requirements are being 18 or older and currently residing in Europe (NOT just the EU, all of Europe!). People of all orientations including straight people, are needed and encouraged to participate! This is the first study I know of that explicitly includes on people on the aromantic spectrum, so if you are on it or know someone, please take part!

It is completely anonymous, no conclusions to your person can be drawn!

Please take part if you can and share it!

Thank you!

Just tagging some aro-themed blogs here to get more aro participants! Dont feel pressured to reblog tho, just shooting my shot here

I’ve been seeing pro-aborts throw around high risk/crisis pregnancy situations as reasons why they support abortion. One was placental abruption…WHICH WOULD NEVER BE SAFE TO HANDLE VIA ABORTION, AND IS NOT PART OF THE PROTOCOL FOR HANDLING THIS MEDICAL CASE. [X]And this wasn’t even the only medical myth that they shared!

There are some hellish situations to be in while pregnant. There are also obstetric solutions to them that do not involve killing a human being. Feel free to search my tags to find examples.

If you claim to be pro-choice and have spread such BS, educate yourself and stop scaremongering women into dangerous abortions that are unneeded to begin with. If you are pro-life, it helps our advocacy and efforts tremendously to know basic medical facts to prevent misinformation from spreading.

How Glow-in-the-Dark Jellyfish Inspired a Scientific Revolution

What makes a jellyfish glow? For scientists, asking that simple question led to a powerful new tool that’s completely transformed medicine (and won the Nobel!)

Basic research often leads to innovations that have had a significant impact on humanity. Take any invention or modern innovation and in its history you’ll find decades — or even centuries — of odd and obscure research that led to its creation.

But federal funding for these kinds of studies is at risk. Now, more than ever, we need your voice to help support robust and sustained federal research funding.

On today’s episode of CSI: Ocean…

A new study highlights how autonomous underwater robots carrying MBARI technology can revolutionize efforts to monitor ocean health by tracking the DNA “fingerprints” of marine life. Our team combined two MBARI innovations—a long-range autonomous underwater vehicle and a novel “laboratory in a can”—to survey the drifting bits of genetic material known as environmental DNA (eDNA). These DNA clues are left behind by all living things in the ocean, from microbes to sea lions.

A long-range autonomous underwater vehicle is a nimble robot that can travel to remote areas of the ocean for extended missions. Autonomous technology allows MBARI researchers to maintain a persistent presence in the ocean and collect data that informs effective management. Expanding the scale of eDNA sampling over time and space will give us new insight into biodiversity changes in sensitive areas and track rare, endangered, and invasive species–all critical to understanding, promoting, and maintaining a healthy ocean. Learn more: https://mbari.co/eDNARobots.

Dragonfish lurk in the dark depths

During a recent expedition aboard our research vessel Western Flyer, MBARI’s science team encountered a beautifully bronze deep-sea dragon. Meet the highfin dragonfish, Bathophilus flemingi

MBARI researchers have observed a few different dragonfishes in the depths of Monterey Bay, but this one is the rarest we’ve encountered. We’ve only seen this particular species four times in more than three decades of deep-sea research and more than 27,600 hours of video! We spotted this individual just outside of Monterey Bay at about 300 meters (980 feet).

Bathophilus flemingi can be up to 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) long. Its fins have long, thin rays. Scientists suspect those wing-like filaments may sense vibrations in the water, alerting the fish when predators or prey are approaching. They likely provide stability and keep the fish from sinking while it lies in wait for food. These dragons don’t have scales—they have smooth, dark skin. Research by MBARI and our collaborators has revealed the pigments in the skin of some deep-sea dragonfishes are some of the blackest blacks found in nature, all the better to camouflage in the ocean’s midnight zone. Learn more on our Creature feature.
