Kari Barba: The Queen of Modern Tattooing

Slovakian-bornFilip Fabian got into tattooing at the age of 16 because of his cousin, who had a tattoo studio. Eager to get started, he bought a $20 coil machine and tried inking a rose on himself, but the device broke down. With practice, better tools, apprenticeships, and many guest spots, he became a professional in 2010.
Fabian studied art at the Technical University of Kosice, becoming interested in Basquiat and Rothko; the latter artist commented that “Shapes have no direct association with any particular visible experience.” Although inspired by the spontaneity of these painters, Fabian explained that “I also work with shapes. I love anatomy, geometry, and forms that blend into the abstract without losing their meaning.”

The 10 Best Movies From London Film Festival 2020
The 64th BFI London Film Festival ran from 7th-18th October, in greatly reduced circumstances. Given the Covid-19 pandemic has taken up almost the entire year, film festivals worldwide have been forced to rethink things. Some have opted to scale down significantly, while others decided to go online.
LFF 2020 held select screenings at a handful of venues, but mostly it was virtual, including industry talks, with audiences across the UK able to watch films from the comfort of their living room. Nobody will claim this is the future for festivals; the big-screen experience remains unique and the optimum way to see movies, but tough times call for compromises. Still, the programmers did an excellent job, even if we were all forced to watch at home, and the scale of the festival was slimmed down.

Hailing from South Russia, specifically Rostov-on-Don, Denis “Tidan” Torikashvili began his tattooing career in 1997. That’s 23 years ago when there was barely an industry, acceptance, and fair working conditions.
Tidan has had many setbacks and restarts, from moving and working in Moscow to London—the latter getting a big break at NR Studio in 2017. And an even more significant opportunity came to him in 2019. Franco Vescovi invited him to be a part of the Bishop Rotary family and a resident artist at Vatican Studios in California, United States.
This interview is a view of Tidan’s rise to success, his adaptation to the West Coast, and dealing with the COVID-19 lockdown.

Movie releases have been hugely complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Since March, going to see a movie on the big screen hasn’t been an option. Typically, at this point in the year, we’d be right in the middle of Hollywood blockbuster season, but the major studios have indefinitely postponed their tentpole offerings. Things are bad right now and traditional exhibition is in big trouble, but on the bright side VOD services are able to offer new movies and platforms such as Netflix and Amazon have released a whole bunch of films, so we’ve managed to cobble together a list of films you can check out from the comfort of your living room.

Paradox’s career as a graphic designer producing logotypes and business cards in a stuffy office is almost like a past life. What made him quit, was his unwillingness to continue working a 9 to 5 job.
Based in Enschede, Eastern Netherlands near the German border, Paradox attentively works with his clients, making tattoos that are spiritual and life-altering. A “mandala” is not a generic symbol, but one that evolves from a center—with energy, uniqueness, completeness, and unity.
