The sheep of North Ronaldsay in Orkney have been living on the island as far back as the iron age and have evolved to eat a diet of mineral rich seaweed. The Orkney Sheep Foundation.

Costaria costata

Normally I don’t like to post pictures with names or copyrights on them because I feel it ruins the a e s t h e t i c of this blog. However, this one links back to a really nice marine biology website with a tagline that reads:

“A STUDY IN OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE MARINE BIOLOGIST POST-GRADUATION EXISTENTIAL CRISIS RESOLUTION”

I’m not obsessive-compulsive but I very much identify with that statement.

You’re probably familiar with pressed flowers, but perhaps not with pressed seaweed. The Victorians adored nature and loved to bring the outdoors inside. Pressed seaweed specimens were both used in decor and collected in albums, like herbariums. They were also popular tourist souvenirs from seaside towns.

This stunning Victorian seaweed assemblage takes the form of a cross and is housed in a beautiful Eastlake style frame. A marvelous devotional object, especially if you enjoy depictions of Mary as “stella maris” (star of the sea) as I do.

Stem cell bandages

Bandages and band aids containing stem cells to help heal wounds are closer to reality after scientists found a way to keep stem cells alive at room temperature.

By encasing stem cells in a frogspawn-like gel made from a seaweed extract called alginate, scientists at Newcastle University can put them inside bandages, which could be used to help speed up healing from ulcers or burns for example.

The gel retains the cells so that they don’t leave the bandage – it’s the chemicals these cells make that actually do the healing.

The low-cost discovery also has lots of other potential applications, because until now stem cells have had to be kept in specialised conditions; at 37°C, in atmospheric oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide.

Alginate is a natural material extracted from seaweed that is used in cosmetics and food manufacturing and is already used in wound dressings, without stem cells, to keep burns moist.
