There is a special spot reserved in my heart for Magnificent Frigatebirds. These fuckos are so regal, and they are also ENORMOUS, with a wingspan of up to 8 FEET.
The first time I saw one in person, my brain did a 10-second-reboot because oh neat a pterodactyl just flew overhead–waitwhatnow?
Again, these aerial monstrosities have a wingspan significantly longer than adult human, and in the wild you’ll most encounter them circling high in the air above an ocean coast.
Which is why it was endlessly hilarious to me when I found out what the males look like close up.

the inflatable sac is a secondary sex characteristic that the males use specifically to attract mates, so in essence yes! this is the closest avian equivalent to a push-up bra
it’s also extremely important that you know their courting ritual involves males sitting atop potential nesting locations (whilst showing off their tiddies) and, whenst chosen by a female, bringing her sticks with which she can build a nest to her liking.
imagine a human dating show but it’s guys standing around vacant lots flexing their pecs and when a woman shows interest they rush to gather a bunch of mortar/rebar/assorted building materials so their cool new Construction Worker Girlfriend can build her dream home
Oh man, I’d build so many secret passageways in my home nest. And a fancy library. And a tower, just because. Basically, my home nest would be a small-ish castle, I guess is what I’m saying.

I need to get us some matching shoes for his birthday. It’s gonna be vans that are colorblock with blue, yellow, green, and red. I know he will love them and so will I. Plus there’s this matching shirt I totally want .
