This is an old painting but I still really like it! It was an experiment with using photos, and then someone made a joke about a fish-submarine… and there you go!
Today we celebrate National Submarine Day. No, not the sandwich, but the actual underwater vessels and the men and women who serve on them. We wonder if they serve submarine sandwiches on board a submarine vessel.
On this day in 1900, the Navy commissioned its first submarine called the USS Holland. Pictured here is the crew from the USS Jimmy Carter during the ship’s Christening Ceremony in 2004.

Los Campesinos!released,No Blues, their fifth full length studio album this week and with all the ruckus that the Arcade Fire have been making for their new album, it’s come in slightly under the radar. No Blues continues the progression that was heard on Hello Sadness, a push towards a more mature and complete sound from the band.
To help shine some light on the record, Los Campesinos! have also released a video for one of the songs from the album, “Avocado, Baby”. As with most songs from the Welsh six piece, it’s a deeply lyrical song. To go along with that is an equally deep music video. Directed by Craig Roberts, star of the indie flick Submarine, the video stars lead singer Gareth Campesinos! as a 70s game-show host. The entire video was cleverly shot in one continuous tracking shot. Check out the video and trry to decipher it for yourself.

Command-at-Sea is one of the highest and singular responsibilities to be earned by a human being.
Since time immemorial, the skipper, The Captain, of a vessel….surface or subsurface….military or commercial….shoulders an almost-god-like position aboard his or her ship.
They’re responsible for everything and everyone. Any mistake is their mistake, too….no matter who makes it. Their decisions are final and not to be questioned except under the rarest and most extraordinary of circumstances.
That vessel is under their total and absolute command….

During my Naval career, I served under a couple dozen different skippers….ranging from those right out of Hollywood Central Casting as the ultimate of professional and admirable ship captains….to a few I often wondered how they ever got to their current position.
This photo and graphic sums up a composite of all those skippers under which I had the honor and pleasure (and dismay, a few times) of serving throughout my sea-going decades.
