#toxic fandom

LIVE

Sometimes i forget that Tumblr is still a thing, Tumblr is never the same after they removed the 18+ content etc, when this was a place where you could post whatever you wanted so to say without Tumblr being triggered just by the slightest thing that go against their “guidelines”

But at the same time i don’t miss the toxic fandoms. It wasn’t all toxic, but toxic people. And definitely in the Jason Isaacs community too. Not gonna sugar coat anything here right now i feel like this needs to be said, while most of you has been so nice and accepting and i really love some people I’ve met online here. But a few years back there was some individual(s) no matter what you did or say everything was just wrong and couldn’t accidentally like a post or comment without someone throwing a fit over it. GET FCKING OVER IT. And also if you are so sad and that you’re life is so fucking miserable then maybe not come here on Tumblr crying about it, seek some professional help if it’s that bad. Then again making posts about how no one cares about you on this site and expecting people to care when you haven’t even considered how others might be feeling when you have talked so much sh1t, i do feel bad since the person has shared some personal issues on posts and ofc it’s horrible, but you can’t treat people bad on here just because you have your own personal stuff to deal with. Dont be horrible to other people to make yourself feel better. That’s just toxic…

Do better, honestly

But anyways i come on here once and a while, i hope everyone is doing okay. Myself I’m kinda just doing alright atm, autumn is my favorite time of the year so my mental health gets so much better around September-october :))

Things I’ve seen antis do: Call a Chinese author racist for talking about Japan’s atrocities in China. Attack a CSA survivor for writing a fictionalised account of her abuse. Say an Egyptian actor is ‘white’ and has no right to play an Egyptian character. Harrass people over their headcanons about fictional characters. Things I’ve never seen antis do: literally anything to help the people or causes they say they care about.

Consumption isn’t a shortcut to character and morality goes well beyond fandom. That’s modern culture in a nutshell.

Consumption isn’t activism and we should be glad - because if consumption was activism, then your entire positive contribution to the world would be cancelled out by exactly one person having a different hobby.

This reminds me a lot of a concept I’ve seen a lot in American Christianity, especially evangelical/fundamentalist Protestantism, which is the idea that the only criteria for being “saved” is expressing belief in Jesus and God. You don’t need to do good things, you don’t need to show compassion and kindness to others, you don’t need to help the less fortunate—you just need to believe in Jesus and essentially (from an outsider perspective) perform your faith according to social expectations.

Given how culturally Protestant* (and specifically evangelical) the US is, and how American many fandom spaces can be, I have to wonder how much of this “consumes the right media = good person, consumes the wrong media = bad person” idea is just this same ugly concept repackaged and rebranded with leftist terms. I don’t think people who do this are intentionally recycling the Christian rhetoric they were raised with—I think they may not even be aware that that’s where their thinking comes from, because when the culture you’re raised with is still the dominant culture of where you live it’s hard to fully shake it off. But the point is that I absolutely think cultural Christianity has a big impact on a lot of social justice discourses even when the people discussing have actively distanced themselves from the religion.

A personal message from Ewan McGregor.

This weekend, Star Wars fans made Obi-Wan Kenobi the most watched Disney Plus Original Series premiere of all time. And for that, I would say a big thank you, and it just goes to show what this family can do when we all pull together.

However, it seems like some of the fanbase, from this influential fanbase, have decided to attack Moses Ingram online and send her the most horrendous, racist DMs. And I heard some of them this morning and it just broke my heart.

Moses is a brilliant actor, she’s a brilliant woman, and she’s absolutely amazing in this series. She brings so much to the series, she brings so much to the franchise. And it just sickened me to my stomach to hear that this had been happening.

I just want to say, as the leading actor on the series, as the executive producer on the series, that we stand with Moses. We love Moses, and if you’re sending her bullying messages, you’re no Star Wars fan in my mind. There’s no place for racism in this world, and I totally stand with Moses.

Recently realized that I’ve stumbled into too much FE3H discourse, when all i wanted from this fandom was shipping dimiclaude (and maybe edelclaude).

But somehow lately, i keep seeing:

“Edelgard’s a facist!” “No, she’s not!” “Yes, she is!”…etc…etc…

And

“Hate Claude because he’s a centrist and a liberal!”

And Dimitri…Everyone’s simping for Dimitri. What do i have to do to teach algorithms to show me more Claude? Or at least more Dimiclaude than Dimileth??? —But not really the same problem.

I like fangirling over fictitious characters’ governing well, to justify my fangirling, as much as anyone. And using fiction as a springboard to discuss tangential things is my favorite type of learning. But at what point did all this take over the majority of my FE3H feeds? I just wanted some fuffly shipping. …for the most part. I’ve actually appreciated all the interesting governance discussions and food for thought. But i need a break now.

It’s funny how today of all days (THE SEASON 3 PREMIERE!) that I find myself writing this. I found out one of my followers was having trouble with some parts of the SVTFOE fandom and is leaving it for a while. I haven’t really engaged with the fandom, what with my previous history of being part of fandoms and my social anxiety seeping online, so I have no idea what goes on in the shadows, but if people are being harassed or bullied because of disagreements on things like ships, fan theories, fan fics or headcanons, then this fandom is in danger of becoming toxic.

So to all those who are sending people hurtful messages because of such ultimately miniscule matters, would you kindly remove your head from your ass and find something more productive to do instead of being petty and picking fights with someone online because you don’t like what they say about a cartoon show.

I just want to Say that if You delete your blog, or left a fandom ,or erase all Ur social medias to stay away from someone or somethIng that give You a Bad experience, it Will never meant they won, youre doing what You need to protect your mental health, is valid if You decide to stay and make ur existence a nightmare for them and is also valid as heck to leave and stay the fuck away from them, they might think they won, but we don’t give a shit about them, what matter is Us we’re doing it for US, for You, for your mental health, staying on a place or leaving , are valid as heck.

“don’t let someone ruin the things You love” and “stay away from toxic people ” CAN EXIST TOGUETHER

do what You need as long as is for YOUR OWN GOOD
