Trying to reacquaint myself with how to draw characters after a month of mostly drawing buildings and designing light

So here’s a nifty little

tutorial on pushing expression without caricaturing the characters too much

The thing about these actors is that their expressions rely so much like micro expressions to carry very very heavy emotion across in fairly restrained people, so either we caricature/stylise their faces and make them more comic-y or we rely on rules of design to push a more realistic style.

In the case of Jyn and Cassian the expression is a lot in the eyes, so we’ll focus on that:

Eg: usually with sadness, the eyebrows will pull up at the centre, pulling the eyes with it with a triangle where its highest point is closest to the bridge of the nose. But Cassian’s eyebrows don’t always do that. Sometimes he furrows them instead, but we can still play with that triangle!

image
image

So what I do, is I usually have the line of the eyelid moving up like the eyebrow, emphasising that as the long shape, and have the lines inside the eyebrows move in a rhythm to emphasise that triangle. Similarly I’ll try to draw the shape of the eye socket in a shape that also emphasises that (here I’m using diamonds, because squares are better for masculine characters).

image

Further, I changed the edge of his cap so it moves up subtly, rather than down, to emphasise that sadness once more time.

Same with Jyn. Here, too, I’ve furrowed her brow a little more than it was in the original shot, because eyebrows that move up can also imply joy, and the realisation that they’re trapped on Scarif definitely is not joyful.

image

Compare to this one, where I had the lines inside his eyebrows push down on the eyes, and the eyeshade tilted a little to emphasise the downward turn at the centre of the face.

Video description: a tiktok video discussing AO3’s new comment blocking feature.

The video begins by showing a tweet from the Ao3_status twitter account. The tweet reads, “Comment blocking is now live! ” and is responding to the tweet linking the AO3 News post announcing that comment blocking is coming.

The narrator then goes to the comments section on one of her works and points out that there is a new button available. On comments from other users, you can now see a button labelled “Block.”

She taps on the Block button and it takes her to a confirmation page. The confirmation page outlines what blocking will do: stop a user from commenting on your works and stop a user from replying to your comments elsewhere on AO3. It also outlines what blocking will not do: hide that user’s works or bookmarks from you, delete or hide their existing comments on your works, hide their comments elsewhere on the site.

She confirms that she wants to block the user and then returns to her comments section. The button that formerly said “Block” now says “Unblock.” She says you can remove the block on a user by pressing that button again or by tapping on your username at the top of the page and selecting My Preferences from the dropdown menu that appears.

On the My Preferences page, there is now a button labelled “Block users.” After tapping that button, she goes to a new page. On that new page, you can see the user she just blocked and a button next to their username that says “Unblock.”

She taps that button and it takes her to a confirmation page which outlines what will happen if she agrees. Unblocking a user will allow them to comment on your work or to reply to your comments elsewhere on the site. She confirms.

The screen goes back to the Blocked Users page found in My Preferences, and the narrator explains that you don’t need to find a comment from another user in order to block them. If you’d like, you can type their name into the text box provided and block them directly from that page.

Not shown: you can also block a user from that user’s profile page.

If you’d like to know more about more blocking and muting features that are planned, read the News post linked above.

FYI to all it looks like this to the people you have blocked:

thank you to @izhunny for the help! more info here: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/izhunny/686868603279130624

Drawing Mountain Ranges

There are many ways to go about drawing mountains when mapmaking, but here’s a step-by-step guide for how I draw mine. It’s not a method that I came up with all on my own, but I nevertheless hope that my version will be helpful for some folk!

I also just wrote a blogpost on this topic, so if you want to read about how I go about mapmaking and mountain-drawing, feel free to give it a read: https://steventdunn.wordpress.com/2020/05/13/drawing-mountains-for-your-map/

A fantastic fuck-ton of human neck references.

People have been asking about adam’s apples and why they don’t show up in skeletal anatomy. The adam’s apple technically isn’t bone; it’s cartilage that protrudes to a certain degree. And, contrary to what some believe, everyone has this. It’s even more prominent in a few females than males. It depends on your body. It’s typically associated with a deeper voice because the cartilage lies in front of the vocal chords and, as you go through puberty, the cartilage drops and fuses together with the larynx, and the result is slightly broader in males (which is why we often have deeper voices). In the above images, you can see that there’s a break in muscle in the front of the neck, and the thyroid cartilage (that blue shape in the “medimagery.net” image) pokes through that break.

And, so you know where the shape of the bottom image comes from, I’ll throw in this diagram, too:

An adequate fuck-ton of coloured pencil how-to references.

Things to remember when utilizing coloured pencils is that you ought to find what works best for you when shading. Some people start with the light colours and shade darker, some vise versa, and some shade with the lightest colour and then go from dark to light. Also recognize that many different colours can compose a single surface (refer to last image of lips). Contrast is a key to making this all work. Focus on manipulating your light to dark shading with a single colour before incorporating many colours.

And because some of these images are so long, you’re gonna have to reverse-image search ‘em on Google to see the text (we all ought to complain to Tumblr about not having an image-magnifying tool).

(P.S. The anatomy in a few of these tutorials is off, but the techniques still apply, I promise.)

An appealing fuck-ton of werewolf references.

Werewolves are a tad simpler to define than aliens or natural deformities; virtually every werewolf is depicted as (obviously) a half human half wolf. In virtually every instance, the human grows larger, harrier, and far more muscular. Werewolves can stand on two legs AND run on all four, so be aware that the neck will be capable of adjusting for both. You know what furries are, right? Of course you do, you’re on tumblr. So a werewolf is like a furrie in a really hard-core yiff, but more majestic and with less depressing anatomy.
